Totally gripping, the first time i've wanted to sit thru a Tchaik 1 for a long time.Even with the Earl's typical"faults"(?)-too fast, too"lipsticky"in lyric moments...,he gives a living, vital, human dynamic to this adventure;edge of seat, even with scrappy sound&image.Poor old Fiedler&orch keep up as best as they can.For once it seems the Ghastly Balls-up Baldwin paino doesn't ruin the sound totally! A great musical personality&marvellous, individual pianist.
Woww!! I just know that he plays this great tchaikovski's piece as well. It was great and very fast!! at the end. When I turned on the youtube and watch this video, it makes me really miss him, I watch this video just less than a week after he died. I was shocked when I knew that he has just passed away. We really miss him and we will never forget Wild, a great pianist
it's amazing....full of fire, passion.. I did not know Earl Wild was able to do so... and that's a wonderful surprise !
he deserves much more admiration from his pairs tahn waht he does actually..
When listening to his performance, I guess that's how in Moscow or St Petersburg at the time of Rachmaninov, Hoffman, Scriabin, and others.. this masterpiece was played.. for musical excitment, as well as "rivalty" among pianists...all a program !!!
Yes all true, but to be able to play so well and so accurately is amazing. I have heard Argerich do this sort of stuff live and it is exhilerating, very. Of course there will be tiny fluffs and inaccuracies, and towards the very end it is nearly impossible for even EW to articulate the phrases, but octaves like his need to be envied and admired. Horowitz used to think highly of EW and on this form, you can see why.
kasyapa, I think I love you. :) You are one of the few people with common sense that I've run across. My old artist teacher described Cliburn as "bone-lazy". I would describe him as "bone-boring".
@kasyapa Whose Rachmaninoff is horrifying? Wild's or Cliburn's ? Certainly not Wild, his recordings of the 4 concertos made back in 1962 are electrifying and stand with the best ever made. Please tell me you mean Cliburn !
Earl Wild is one of my favorite pianist, like Cziffra, Marc-André Hamelin, Stephen Hough or Katsaris... I like is open minded way to play the piano. And his vista and brio !! Long life ^_^
Amazingly technically accurate save some pedal trouble. Just amazing, though I too prefer slower pace of Cliburn. Jaw dropping, without a doubt!! Thank you for the post. This is the first performance I had ever seen of this Concerto so the memories are priceless. Thank you, again.
Well they certainly win the speed award! Awesome performance by Wilde.
Unfortunately due to the pace the orchestra is cutting a lot of notes short and generally sounds rushed. Personally, I think it would be better/create more contrast if the overall pace was slower while still retaining the blazing speed of the end/virtuoso segments.
That. Was. Crazy.

R.I.P., Mr. Wild. The ending is true to his name! What a virtuoso, and a great musician, and a nice man. He will be missed.

Earl Wild played for Horowitz way back in the day. Horowitz admitted that EW had more technique than he did, but he had more "Pizzaz".

Check out his (Earl Wild's) liszt concerto (you tube), 3rd movement. It's hot.

Holy SH!T those are some octaves. Electrifying.
Van Cliburn could put anyone to sleep with his playing. BORING.

his rachmaninoff is really horrifying. he pioneered insanely slow tempi before pogorelich. btw, you should check out everything on my channel. :)

Still, 5 stars for pure entertainment value!
