  • Needs tweaking but not bad

  • Rattus2025 - GKR guys do attend classes , tournaments etc etc in Japan on a regular basis, this may not be the Rm's , #kancho but people like Anthony Ryan , Dean Gould , Llachan Carr represent GKR on many occasions so please get your facts correct before commenting on Mtturner7 comments.

  • @fbs1000 as i have said before, if i am wrong, show me evidence.(i.e: video footage, tournament results, etc.)

they may compete in japan, however they do not represent GKR. GKR are not a registered school with the AKF, JKF or WKF. Whilst GKR students may compete, it is not done under the GKR banner.

  • @mrturner7 as i said, if im wrong please say so, I didn't post to get into a pissing match with you, I'm just asking for facts and hard evidence rather than anecdotal evidence. I would settle for a video of Bob Sullivan and Stacey Karetsian(spelling?) coaching the team in Japan if you can't supply dates. At least maybe say how often they go(ie: once every six months) if you're able to. I'm not out for a flame war mate, just asking for facts

  • @mrturner7 and the "kitten" you speak of is actually my wife's cat. The video I posted was the first time I had gotten to hold her. My friends and I found it funny, so I posted it, sue me :P

  • @mrturner7 they go to japan every now and then to compete, please dont spout lies about them taking "regular trips to japan" because this is simply not the case.

i wouldnt say GKR are at all respected by the japanese, i certainly have not heard of them being welcomed with open arms into any dopjo i am aware of, accept of course the club that they paid their way into.

honeslty, if i am wrong in saying that they do not regularly travel to japan, please provide dates that they regularly go

  • this guys crap at the empi jump. my m8s a white belt and he can do it perfectly

  • Note: in this video the kata has been done slower and less fluid than it should be as it is from a training video. I saw it done in real time by a GKR black belt on the weekend and it was really impressive, lots of power and 'snap' but also flowing. Not at all like this.

  • My grading kata today :)

Kata is my weak point though, I'm better at sparring :S

    Wish me luck :P

  • Learning GKR Karate so suck it!

  • ... pft

  • I dont think he went through a real grading, perhaps it was a case GKR wanted some legitamacy(which they will never have) Probably bought it, my old RM in Leeds told me that when the RMs went to Japan, the Japs slaughtered his technique. Money Talks- Sad but true

  • @The13hands you and kaich0 should get a room. Your both as bitter and twisted as each other. Show some respect. You are a disgrace to you style, your senseis and yourself. If you think it is rubbish STOP WATCHING and play with yourslef with the computer of for a change.

  • @The13hands

ah youve been listening to thrid hand information,,i bet if i told you santa existed and i seen him youd believe me lol..first get the facts directly from the man himself and the people concerned ,as you are like a banging gong with no distiguishable sound, making no sense whatsoever

  • @The13hands

any euro person taking his/her Karate to japan is going to get slaughtered.

  • @GTFORDMAN im not sure if i agree with that statement entirely, given the current WKF kata champion is from Italy. I do however think that ANY person who takes their karate to japan should be adequately prepared, and it seems the GKR guys simply werent...

  • @rattus2025 i absolutly agree with be prepared for sure, but you said kata champion? i think "The13hands" was refering to kumite, and when your up against the japanese who are feircly proude of their Karate and live and breath it much more then a person from a european country does, theres only so much preparing you can do to compete against them lol.

  • @GTFORDMAN far as i kno, the japanese have been overtaken long ago in the realms of both kata and kumite, at least in the sporting arena anyway.

  • @The13hands

are you a goose? Of course it was a real grading! It was a JKF grading. And his technique wasn't slaughtered fool. Because the JKF do things a little different, they had to alter techniques to suit their system.

  • Say what you like guys but the man went to Japan having never trained in goju other thaan GKR's interpretation and was graded to 5th dan so to say he doesnt know what he is doing is just stupid!

  • I got to train with him for a weekend a few months ago. He's only 5 foot 5/5 foot 6.

  • it's actually best to breathe out of your nose for the same reason you shouldn't kiai in a real fight.. if you get hit in the jaw with your mouth open it's gonna do more damage than if it was closed.

  • Much of the "old" teaching methods of karate had flaws. We know this because so many practitioners of older training methods have damaged knees & hips. Similarly the idea of always breathing out via the mouth is flawed, as the body loses too much moisture that way and dehydrates. Any sports instructor will tell you it's always best to breathe out through nose in any situation, except if you are doing a kiai.... that can be VERY messy via the nose!!

  • yeah but a kiai empowers your strike, unnerves them, giving you more power, inflicting more damage.

And if you breathe in the nose and out the mouth you will regain energy quickly.

  • Oh - I thought that the hair in your nose was to filter out the dust and crap

This guy sounds like a boxer - GKR twat

  • does anyone know that this guy is actually the next down (rank-wise) from the founder of GKR,kancho sullivan?

thats the reason why what he is doing is pretty much correct(NOT PERFECT),and therefore he probably knows more about this GKR version of the kata than anyone else training in GKR(apart from kancho, of course)

  • OH dear , Listen carefully he breathes out through his nose- there arnt many masters that will to you to breathe out throught your nose. Sounds like a boxer.

    Who is he???

  • actually, there are quite a few very high-ranked instructors that have (in the past) told you to breathe out through your nose-it just depends on how you prefer to breathe. basic fitness instructors will tell you to breathe in through your nose and out your mouth, but in the end, perople have their own way of breathing.just because shihan breathes like this,it doesnt mean the other 5000+ students have to do exactly the same as him when breathing.

  • Also, this is an old clip, the Kata has been tweaked since then.

  • very good shihan well nice and smooth

  • is he breathing out or is that the air distortion from the speed in with heas cutting into it

  • nice shihan doing empi do you have anymore of him?

  • As far as GKR kata goes this is one of the best I've seen.

If you would like some advice (probably not) I would like to see the weight not so much in the middle in back stance. And I can see that the front foot in front stance is rocking out to the side.

    Good training

  • Comment removed

  • GKR has a stance called kokutsu duchi which isnt a back stance as such its exactly as its demonstrated there, also in regards to "rocking out to the side"? I watched the whole time at his feet and not sure what your talking about.

  • Thanks for your comment

Look at his knee (especially the three pressing blocks before the jump) - the weight over his leading leg isn't stable (pause it when his left leg is forward) - any pressure to the inner thigh would result in collapsing the stance - poor body mechanics and understanding of zenkutsu-dachi.

GKR may have a stance called kokutsu duchi which is EXACTLY like demonstrated, but karate has a stance called kokutsu-dachi which is nothing like this stance here.

    Good training

  • well shihan is one of our chief instructors so he knows exactly how iy should be and I believe the knee sticks out to make you stable in your zenkutso dachi with weight in middle that is the form of GKR karate and how ive been taught so it doesnt collapse in. im guessing if you had all your weight over your ftront it would make it vulnerable to sweeps hence we dont do it, happy training also, what style u training in?

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply and in a less hostile way - now I think discussion can take place.

Let's remove the fact of who this is and look objectively at his body mechanics - the foot is banana shaped so that if the outside edge of the foot is straight then the toe points inwards -good practice in karate.

Now this karate-ka is trying to push his knee in lie with his foot; forcing his ankle to roll over. This stance is naturally weak because it goes against natural body movement...

  • .....karate teaches us to work with our bodies if he allowed his knee to point forward but where it should go naturally.

As for kokutsu-dachi the weight is shifted away from the middle to allow you to drive power from the back leg whilst having the option to kick from the front. If the weight is in the middle then you limit your potential movements.

I train karate too, absolutely love it.

If you need me to explain anything better - because I've probably done a bad job!

    Good trainig

  • @WestBfella i agree, but this video was shot for students learning the kata (a pre shodan students) so the videos and explanations are still 'exagerating' the knee position - post black belts (or advanced pre-black belts) are not excouraged to push the knee out as far and adapt a more natural position. i show students to pull their weight forward with their inner thigh while driving forward from the back leg, excess push out of the knee will prevent this. this is how senior r students r taught.

  • @watosensei also to be clear for anyone else reading this; pulling forward with the front leg - the knee should remain solid (no movement)... :-)

  • nicely performed :)

very similar to the shotokan method of performing empi :)

  • my favourite one so faaar (: x
