  • 3:30 Yngwie who?

  • I was fortunate to meet Gary Shea (he played Aria basses) I worked for the American distributor anyway, I was invited to witness a band like Alcatrazz at a small venue called the Golden Bear (the original one)... and to see Steve Vai play live was beyond amazing. The whole band just blew the lid off the joint!!!

  • Demorou para vc colocar pra baixar ele inteiro. Falow

  • Man, it sounds like a totally different group with Vai in there. I like the Yngwie stuff too.

  • charvel!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Those drums sound incredible!

  • @WolfStatic It's gotta be the power of the Brillo hair!

  • @WolfStatic It's gotta be the power of the Brillo hair! I just wikipedia checked for that drummer - it has to be Jan Uvenna who played from one year before Vai to one year after Vai. He originates from my town on Long Island!

  • ops!!!!.......... sinistro

  • o0 vocalssssssssssssssssssssss siistroooooooooo

  • @krFna Good Call!

  • Maybe I'm just a simple man, but what's great about music is whatever makes your ears happy, is just plain good music to your ears.

    1)i LOVE Yngwie.

    2)i LOVE Vai.

Im not going to sit here and argue about who is the better player, I did that shit for years. I used to say "John Petrucci is the greatest PERIOD"..but now I don't even try to compare, I just listen to what I like. Not a big fan of Alcatrazz, but I love both Yngwie and Vai as solo artists so much, it's not worth comparing them.

  • "All Yngwie does is playing Bach in High Speed"

Over simplified BAch in high speed :) Stilll love him tough, don't get me wrong.

Vai an inovator, maybe to someone who never heard anything but rock, at all; Just as Yngwie is simplified Bach, Vai is simplified Zappa.

Again, love them both, but let's put things into perpective here folks.

  • @marviosantos I think the same as you, but I have a predilection for vai!

  • looking forward to seeing Yngwie playing, but he was not there.

    it was so disappointing.

BUT...we didn' know much about Steve Vai - how fantastic he is.

  • Steve Vai doing an Yngwie @ 3.30

  • @PhilosopherOnWeed Which solo was that? don't leave us hanging ffs!

  • @friggetyfuck Hah the solo at 3.30 is from Jet to Jet I believe.

  • Gents, I've worked on stage for 20 years (in November) & have watched sound checks & many shows. I have personally chatted w/both Eddie & Steve. I have also watch Yngwie perform 6 times since 1985. When Yngwie is sober, I used to think he was God's gift to us guitar players. However, 3000 fans at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle witnessed Vai perform the most unbelievable, masterful solo that it left us all (& I looked) w/ our jaws on the floor. It was profound. Simply, he is the MASTER,

  • @JollyRigger which solo was it?

  • @JollyRigger What about Batio????

  • it's amazing how much Steve looks and sounds like Eddie Van Halen in this vintage footage. no wonder David Lee Roth snatched him up for his solo tour.

  • Comment removed

  • @Kissfan96dr He sounds like Steve Vai, not Van Halen...do you even know the difference?

  • I didnt know Steve used strats back in the day. Even though some werent actual strats

  • Yeah! at 2:40 Steve´s "Building the church".

  • /watch?v=CANbBLv-Glg

  • i totally respect yngwie and I like´it ....he is so damngood, sadly predectible and to me that ´s boring, it´s like a vegetal always the same thing, steve vai is a musician, touch my soul and always susprise to me.

  • @ospramu

Not always he surprised me on his concerto album for instance. Very tastefull acoustic on Toccata and the Wailing on Vivace was legendary.

  • I think you guys are forgetting that Vai isn't Yngwie. They look nothing alike.

  • lol alcatrazz has the 2 best guitar players on the history..

  • Vai is the most over rated guitar player, of all time!

  • Comment removed

  • @RockTheLove21 Why dont you just shut up, like your video suggests?

you know, if vai was as bad as you make him out to be, he wouldnt be were he is right now...and you know damn well where he is!

  • @KonkreteXXX I placed the original comment when my wifes account was logged in & didn't realize it. I've seen Vai many times & he's overrated it's that simple & he definitely could not play Yngwies solos back in the Alcatrazz days or even now after 25+ years time to improve. I found usually limited ability (beginner to intermediate) guitarists attracted to him bcus he's easier to grasp & play.

  • @asherasator oh fuck, I wont even bother arguing with you..."easier to grasp" my ass...ALL of yngwie material sounds the same...first two minor chords...and then: natural and harmonic minor scale widdly-widdly...THATS easy to grasp.

  • @KonkreteXXX That's my opinion, those that find Vai's material amazing generally can't play, especially when it comes to "widdly widdly". & it's not expected of Vai's style to be like Yngwie BUT if you're gonna do HIS TUNE (& Alcatrazz got known bcus of Yngwie) then do the solo or parts of the song right that are trademark. Just like piano or violin players know the same scales regardless of the piece but still have a style, he simply can't play the scales clean & articulated at proper speed.

  • @KonkreteXXX & this topic isn't about whether Yngwie's shit sounds the same, I agree he uses a lot of the same scales, JUST LIKE MOST PLAYERS DO, blues guys play the same shit over & over, but morons call that "feeling". Vai plays alot of the same shit: predictable pyrotechnics, whammy bar, holding notes overextending etc. bcus of lack of ability. The point is if you're gonna play a notorious players song then get the known parts down right, or don't play it.

  • @asherasator youre contradicting yourself, youre switching topics, YOU LOSE.

  • @KonkreteXXX This isn't about winning or losing, you switched topics with "Yngwie's shit sounds the same" so I addressed it. Then I emphasized the main point of my original statement & the following statement: "easier to grasp" which I meant more along the lines of able to play not just know what key or scale, which u misunderstood, anybody can read a virtuosic score or tab, but not many can play it properly with the nuances. Vai can't even play articulated multi-octave scales with speed.

  • @asherasator yngwies shit sounds same blabla wasnt a change in subject...it stands in relation the "grasping" aspect you made...LOSE

Second: Anybody can read a virtuosic score...now that, that is REALLY the biggest bullshit I ever heard...why dont you give it a try? you can upload it with your wifes cam.LOSE.

Third: So, you wanna say, that Yngwie can play everything on any of Vai´s songs, who has accomplished way more MUSICALLY (just think of his Honorary Doctor of Music that given to) and sold

  • @KonkreteXXX Anybody that can read music or a tab can read a score for any guitar music one way or another, that doesn't make sense to u? What r u retarded? Ya I do read music & most guitarists can find any known guitarists tabs for those who don't read standard, duh. I have to spell it all out. & Yngwie CAN PLAY ANYTHING OF VAI'S. & outta the 2 Yngwie influenced way more guitarists & actually changed the standards of hard rock or metal especially power-metal guitarists, which most smoke Vai.

  • @asherasator Forget about guitar technique for a second to consider the truth; Via is the most innovative composer alive and Yngwie is just playing "Speed Baroque" in an elecrtic guitar with distortion, which makes Vai way better even if he was an inferior guitarist to Yngnwie, which he is not. It only took hearing Passion and Warfare 21 years ago to realize what my ego didn't want to admit: Vai is not just hiding these effects: he tastefully uses them to enhance his progressive modalities

  • @asherasator Forget about guitar technique for a second to consider the truth; Via is the most innovative composer alive and Yngwie is just playing "Speed Baroque" in an electric guitar with distortion, which makes Vai way better even if he was an inferior guitarist to Yngnwie, which he is not. It only took hearing "Passion and Warfare" 21 years ago to realize what my ego didn't want to admit: Vai is not just hiding these effects: he tastefully uses them to enhance his progressive modalities

  • @Paolo8772 I completely disagree that he 'is most innovative composer alive'. I can appreciate you're really into his playing, that's fine. He's just not my thing & I know without all those effects & whammy bar the level of playing that would result with simply the notes & THAT'S WHERE THE REAL COMPOSITION IS.

There's no point in debating this further, it's a matter of opinion, I've been listening to Vai recordings for over 25 years & seen him live, I just can't get into him musically.

  • @asherasator It only goes to show that clearly, art and music education is not a priority of culture. Shame a Justin Beiber's fan's opinion about music is more respected than conductor Sir Simon Rattle, for example. At least you've heard Vai. Most people have only heard 1% of all the world's music styles. How can one have an opinion about the colour black if they've never seen any other colour? Yngwie's music is certainly more conventional than Vai and therefore, more people understand it.

  • @asherasator P. S. I could care less about his playing. That's just style. I care more about substance. For the record I'm NOT that into Vai's playing; I'm into his music. It's "Space Guitar", not "Speed Baroque". For Baroque, I much prefer Bach. and my favorite music is Mahler, Vai, Wagner, Puccini and so much more. I play violin, piano guitar, drums, sung 2nd choir 2nd tenor in Mahler's Symphony #8, even played trumpet and fr. horn each for a year. OFF COARSE I LIKE VAI BETTER THAN YNGWIE!

  • @Paolo8772 i dont think you can say that steve vai is the most innovative composer alive, perhaps in the world of rock music but certainly not beyond that, it may seem that way because few ppl have even bothered with a compositional style in rock guitar, but if you peer across the broad spectrum of contemporary music (which im sure you have) you will find composers of ridiculous music,

p.s steve vais compositional style owes alot to frank zappa

  • @Paolo8772 The most innovative composer alive? Are you high? Sure Vai has innovated a lot, but he is not the most innovative composer alive. Danny Elfman? John Williams? You gotta understand that there composers in the world outside of the guitar. There are even plenty of guitarists who have innovated more than Vai, like Andy McKee and Don Ross. Vai is far from being the most innovative composer alive, he is original and awesome though I must admit.

  • @Paolo8772 "Just" playing speed baroque.... yeah, how easy! Anyone can do that! Not.

  • @Paolo8772 Yngwie or Malmsteen ? uh , how can you compare two different worlds ?? That's weird.

  • @Paolo8772

Personally, Vai is better, but "Just playing Speed Baroque"? Like that was nothing.

  • @Paolo8772 no body has ever put that any better on any website... i love the way you put that man 100% right

  • @KonkreteXXX I understand Vai's ur man that's fine everybodys entitled to their heroes, influences & opinions. But I've seen him enough & watched him blow his own solos like Ladies Night In Buffalo with Roth live back in the day which I thought was a joke & other performances which turned me off. I just don't like his style, & he trips over these alcatrazz/yngwie songs, his "honorary" gives him no musical superpowers & hitting a harmonic & pulling the whammy bar or tapping gibberish isn't music

  • @asherasator That's what I thought until I heard "Passion and Warfare" when I discovered Vai not to be hiding behind these effects but utilizing them to help express his progressive modalities and modern tonescapes. Satch might be the only rock guitarist to match his technique, but even he doesn't compare as a composer. No other living composer could write "Love Secrets", "the God Eaters", "Angel Food" or "Frangellica". Any music critic worth his weight knows music comes before technique

  • @asherasator way, WAY more of his OWN music, not with a band or something, than yngwie ever will?

haha, I dont know why I´m writing this anyway, since your shitty-ass "original comment" was deleted anyway...LOSE.

  • @KonkreteXXX I DELETED IT FROM MY WIFES ACCOUNT TO PREVENT SHITTY GUITAR PLAYERS COMMENT FURTHER. & What is this supposed to mean "way, WAY more of his OWN music, not with a band or something, than yngwie ever will"? DerDeDer, whatever..YOU LOSE. I was never competing, my opinions stay the same, it doesn't matter what u think & I watched your video & you're exactly the beginner to intermediate Vai guy that would comment. Anyways this is a waste of time. Bottom line Vai sucked in Alcatrazz.

  • @asherasator his own music --> HIS OWN RECORDS...goddamn. Ah fuck it anyways, you "advanced guitar player" ...LOL

  • Vai is so disinterested playing Hiroshima, he's even playin' a Strat, but its just not him....give him back his Ibanez and make him comfortable....

I really like both both versions of this band........................

  • J'ai pas l'impression que Vai joue sur une IBANEZ, pouvez vous me le confirmer ?

  • apples oranges my ass, more like apples to lemons = SOUR note lemons

  • Steve Vai = ITALIAN POWER!!!!!!!!!!!

  • that tap thing sounds exactly like building the church hahaha

  • its genial!!!!!!!

    exelent video!

  • Great live vocals there, and the anthemic theme is awesome.

Steve's playing is excellent as always. :)

  • Blue axe by Performance of Hollywood. They made lots of his Eat 'em tour guitars with Roth.

  • better plasys this songs malmsteen....vai is for other stile ....is true.........

  • 3:20... there should have been a big flashing banner that said NO HOMO!!!!!

  • Anyone know if EV Halen was interested in being in the Cross Roads Movie.

  • @bicycless211 They never asked him because the director wanted a guitarist who was "better" than EVH.

  • @indagdnm to be exact, the director wanted someone who looked great & could play like EVH. Shallow as fuck but hey, turned out pretty cool! Peace

  • yep that guitar seems to have scalloped frets

  • I wonder what pickups he used on his axe for this.

  • @sensational1982 The first clip with the Blue Guitar (might be a Charvel) is definately a Dimarsio x2n in the bridge.

  • no effort at all dude... he puts in no effort at all....

  • hey !! is steve had scalloped neck when playing for alcatrazz ? back in the 80's ?

  • @stupidcompany Woah it appears to be that way :O:O

  • vai looks so nervous at the beginning of this video, i think he says 'how u doin'. bonnets reaction makes me piss myself tho/

  • I think we can all agree Vai and Yng both have incredible and distinct vibrato - arguably the most important lead technique

  • what i will say is vais playing definately picked u after this stage in his career. lamesteens.......well, he just became a fat girl right?

  • Steve Via is an awesome musician no doubt... But, sorry, his style bores the hell out of me. It's too spacey, or something, Yngwie, is probably not as technically proficient as Via, but his playing is 100 times more interesting and enjoyable.

  • @c0deMunkey its the same stuff over and over again, try satriani ;D

  • @c0deMunkey Yeah, I don't always enjoy listening to Steve's stuff. Its incredible, but some things are added just for the sake of being weird and unique and although it succeeds at what it sets out for perfectly, I don't always want to listen to weird. Sometimes you just want to hear some straight up shred.

  • @josiahgust you are totally right, the weird shit absolutely ruins some songs, like the audience is listening, I mean who the fuck wants to listen to people yelling over a song?? the guitar work is amazing, but all the weird shit just ruins it

  • @josiahgust Without weird it wouldn't be Steve...

  • Each artist contributes their own, so that we will enjoy some kick ass shit.

  • I'm a huuuge Yngwie fan, but i also appreciate Vai's two cents as well. Loving the heavy bottom end tone he has here. It's kinda stupid to criticize vai. You know, he and Malmsteen are actually very good friends. He's given Malmsteen a signature Gem,btw..

  • The best G3 wopuld be Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen and Eddie Van Halen. End of story.

  • Yngwie did a G3 tour with Vai and Satch. Sure, he plays fast, but must he always make "The Yngwie Face" every time he hits a run? He reminded me of the preacher character played by Richard Pryor in "Which Way Is Up?"

  • end of the solo reminds me of Building a Church intro, not hte same but the inspiration

  • I like apples and oranges, and blueberries and cranberries and etc.

  • when steve played yngwie!

  • esse Graham Bonnet é muito hilário, esse terno azul ai deve ter copiado do Roberto Carlos hhehheh

  • Funny how this band gets two of the best guitarist's in a row...

  • i think i heard a little bit of "hot dog and a shake" in there...too cool

  • man Vai just kills during every performance no matter what he is playing. Gotta Love Vai.

  • yeah!! BTC at 02:38 (=

great uploading, thanks! on my favs ;)

  • oranges and apples dude, oranges and apples.

im not a full fledge yngwie fan, BUT he was an INNOVATOR dude.

that cannot be taken away by anyone.

i love jake e lee BUT he did not do note for note randy....oranges and apples dudes.

  • @1251wire

the apples are better!!! the apples rules!! the oranges sucks!!

    hahhahah

  • @filipehasche

Try some fruit salad some time... O wait maybe you are one.

  • @1251wire

You and only you know what your talking about. I'd like to hear Vai try black star note for note I think only Malmsteen can do that. You can't compare the two.

  • @44SuperShredder im on the verge of absolutely positive that Vai could play black star note for note. Vai's got it, he just doesn't flaunt it as much.

  • @VinceTarrance

You've seen what happens when Vai tries to play neo classical... He gets shown up by the karate kid with a telecaster.

  • @44SuperShredder touche, i have been beatin. haha

  • @VinceTarrance

Finally someone with a mature sense of humor visits the comments page. Vai obviuously plays all the guitar tracks in that movie so I know he's got it in him. I just meant Yngwie on Black Star is like no other.

  • @44SuperShredder vai wud nail it.

  • @1251wire it's apples and oranges not oranges and apples. just sayin.

  • @1251wire you robbed that comment from the highest rated in the giant balls of gold video didnt you?

  • @1251wire I bet you haven't heard of Ritchie Blackmore a little band called Deep Purple. Malmsteen is nothing more than a big Ritchie fan. I don't see the innovation really... He has taken everything from Blackmoore: style ( neoclasical influences .. Blackmoore had them in '69 ), favourite guitar ( fender strat ), even the favourite color for the guitar is the same, scalloped neck ( Blackmoore had a scalloped neck in the early 70's, search youtube and you'll find an interview about that )

  • @1251wire

    WHAT Yngwie was an INNOVATOR

Eddie Van Halen Randy Roades and Richie Blackmore played like Yngwie in 1979

AND this 24 year old Steve Vai here was allready A LOT better then Yngwie was in his entire Carreer

All Yngwie does is playing Bach in High Speed

  • I used to have this on VHS!! lol - Live at The Budokan - I just remember always loving him playing the Yngwie solos by tapping the runs and making fun of them a bit :D I loved Yngwie back then but Vai can still cut it and Yngwie just doesn't. Vai's playing on this gig was some of his best.

  • damn steve is amazing here :o

  • sorry fans but ı thınk malmsteen was better than vai...

  • what is that trumpet solo called in the beginning anyone?

  • I remember listening to "No Parole For Rock And Roll" and that album kicked ass. But I also had the album with Steve Vai, I just can't remember the name of it.

  • Vai is son of God ! 3:30 cool to watch Vai neoclassical mode...

  • This video is a perfect example although Steve vai is great (in his way) he cant play Yngwie and is not on the same level as him. As well, Yngwie cant or doesnt do wacky chromatic whammy bar riffs.

  • @sniffy45 well steve is amazing, but he is totally different player than yngwie, they are both amazing at what they do.

  • @Guitareben true

  • i like malmsteen's alcatrazz much better. but since the 90`s steve vai went up, yjm got stuck on the same stuff and never came out

  • Ficou bem legal a edição brother ... parabéns e viva o Mestre VAI ! ! ! ! !

  • Malmsteen to vai?!?!!?!?!? Wtf me in the nose

  • hahahaha i love the "building the church"? balloon. i completely agree. different notes, but same 5 finger tapping structure over a 4/4 beat

  • this video shows Steve's great tecnic and some licks that he use nowadays too,but I prefer him in his solo project.

    he's great as always

  • Go get them Spandex Boys!

  • just like to point out your a retard

  • @stereocollis ..Always a good idea to check your own spelling when accusing someone else of being a retard......Just a little food for thought

  • @tmwnat kk mate thank you..

  • JACK BUTLER!?!?!?!

  • @kdjfnvjvd

    Yes same guy ;)

  • Against Karate Kid????

  • @bernhardtsen74 NO WAY!!! Eugene can kick anyone's ass!! fist or tele!!!

  • whats the song with malmsteen sounding lick?

  • Jet to Jet

  • OMG you didnt, first of all Carlos and Clapton have not coverd near the ground Vai has and shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentance as there music is mainstream and we are talking instrumental guitar music. And if your going to get nutted up over a discussion than I dont have time for someone like you.

  • Dont hate anyone, just know he is overated as a musician.YJM does what he does very well, but there is more to playing than just sweeping neo classical passages.Vai has covered vast ranges of music the same cannot be said about YJM.I used to like YJM when learning to sweep was what I was into doing in the 80's but I grew out of that. You clearly have a very limited knowledge of Vai's music. Its cool you like YJM,but by todays standards what he does is easily forgetable.

  • I disagree man.Nobody wants to remember that Vai took this gig because YJM bailed in the middle of a world tour.Vai learned the set list in 48hrs and pulled it off.Thank god he isnt a one dimensional player like YJM,,YJM was cool for about 20 minn before I recognized Everything he plays sounds the same. His style hasnt evolved at all in 25yrs.And he is the biggest dick in the guitar world.A true legand in his own mind.Yesterdays news.

  • I love the jump suits

  • dude you go around claiming hes better than people and saying steve vai sucks and yngwie doesnt need people like you to go around saying how good he is

  • I totally agree with you. Some guys just dont have the mental capability to recognize opinions cant be asserted as facts.

  • actually there is another video where steve vai plays the exact yngwie solo and maybe its UFO music to you because your stuck in yngwies harmonic minor scale over and over and again

man you disgrace yngwie its people like you who make him look bad

  • lolol, what a discussion.Comparing the hands down most one dimensonal player YJSUCKASSHOLE with Vai.Just got to laugh.YJM doesnt need any help proving he is the biggest dick ever.Thats why Vai was here in the first place.Vai owns YJM,as well as countless others.YJM old news thank god.

  • He was compelled to improvise b/c WingWang is so fricking repetitive it makes one nearly want to throw up. WingWang could NEVER play the stuff Zappa asked Vai to play, period. And God knows, WingWang could NEVER play Vai's own material.

  • Comment removed

  • @kamaboko1 amen dude, respect. Noone can play like Vai, period. Vai just takes the word feeling to a 9th dimension

  • "Building The Church???" HAHAHA mijei de rir.

  • This is not steve's best work. Yngwie fit better with alcatrazz.

i still think steves a better guitarist on the whole though

  • agreeeeeed hes more of a lone wolf (Steve)

  • Mickie... you're retarded. Go listen to Lotus Feet... then tell us that Vai doesn't know what he's doing.....

  • I never said Vai didnt know what he was doing. In fact, i said that Vai was better. You are a fucking dumbass.

  • my bad, miss read your comment...

  • understood. merry christmas!

  • you too man

  • imagine Yngwie trying a Steve Vai gig....

  • Yngwie forever

  • ynwgie is so much better than vai it's not even funny. not to say vai is terrible, cause he's most definitely not, but ynwgies writing i think is more thoughtful and not as sloppy (especially when it comes to sweeps)

  • wow.... for one sweeps aren't everything, and for two yngwie is amazing, he revolutionized guitar playing forever, but stevie is just as responsible for that revolution, his music is way more thoughtful with actual song structure, and doesn't revolve around a laser speed solo....

    just saying...

  • That's an ignorant statement. Maybe Yngwie is better at the neoclassical style, but you can't compare the two. IMO, Vai is a more rounded player, and I just prefer his music more. You could say that Yngwie fits better in this band though, that I would agree with

  • @Willbartonrg550 He can't... Steve has a particular style that Yngwie can't play....

  • What is the song they are playing at the first of the video?

  • hahahaha actually is the same position of building the church just two fret higher D:

  • Steve with a DiMarzio X2N in the bridge in that first part! Weird but plausable. This vid makes me wanna mod the crap out of my Strat.

  • Give us Yngwie back !!! I like Vai a lot but... man, hearing him on "hiroshima" and "Jet" is painful. He's got a better sound with the Stratocaster though...

  • steve just had some really fuckin' cool guitars at this time.his current line just seems stiff and sterile to me now.

  • Oh wait..you guys were talking about that tapping part, not the vamp

  • more like bad horsie

  • Who hasn't he played with?

  • wow has steve vai ever improved since then!

  • It isn't 'Building the church' but it is very similar, EVH used to do quite a bit over over the fretboard tapping using his palm the same as this. Definantly inspired by EVH. Saying that, maybe he looked back on this video and though 'I can make a song outta that'?

  • mad vocals though

  • he played better than today......
