As someone who was raised Roman Catholic (but who began attending a conservative Anglican congregation as an adult), I never quite got the evangelical fixation on young earth creationism. Aside from the fact that it's completely and utterly indefensible scientifically, nowhere in scripture does it say that all believers are to walk around with an irrational belief that the world is 6,000 years old. Everything in the Bible happened, why dwell on the time elapsed between creating earth and man?
The gap theory is becoming more widely embraced with time. I think it is certainly a viable possibility as there are other passages in the bible that do seem to support it.
Since so little is recorded about this in the Bible I wonder how important it is. The important truths are repeated over and over again. Faith in Christ is salvation. I personnaly like the gap theory that McGee teaches. What is a million or a trillion years to God who creats time.
Either way, there's room for different opinions on this.
I agree and sometimes I think the dogmatic creationists overlook the very essence and most important message. The simple truth is that God did create the universe and he could and did do it anyway he chose. Since the details are mostly missing, the beyond what the Bible says, we should not let that be an impediment to his grace and glory being preached. Sometimes I think Satan sends such people to mislead the people from that. Read C.S. Lewis, "The Screwtape Letters" for details.
You make a good point while I believe in a young earth theory, I try to keep it in it's place as a secondary issue not the primary of salvation as peaceradio pointed out. There are questions for either side in the debate, but still either way it should be an inturmural debate between brothers and sisters in Christ, not one full of venom and looking for heretics behind every bush. 1st Cor. 13
I believe that all such details or mysteries that are not fully explained or revealed by the Bible WILL be explalined in time. It is NOT necessary for them to be revealed today for me to be saved. As you know, what IS necessary is my belief in the price paid by Jesus on the cross for my sins. My issue is that many people use the creation/evolution dispute as justification to question that sacrifice. As C.S. Lewis pointed out it is an over obsession with minutia that blocks accepting Christ.
Continental drift alone proves a billions of year old earth. Fossils on the borders of continents are the same where they once connected. The current speed the continents are moving would allow this to be billions of years ago. 6,000 year old universe people just say the flood caused that. Well that can not be for they are only in the exact spots where they once joined. It also proves against a 15,000 year old earth like this video mentions.
To those who say that there is no science to support a literal Bible (6-days), do your research.
There is A LOT of science towards a young earth . . actually more than is towards an old earth.
You can start your research here: AnswersInGenesis org
BUT, there is MUCH more evidence all around.

I believe that six days is enough for a God who can do anything. The bible says six literal days and to say otherwise is to call God a liar.
