The month I owned that bass I spent several days tweaking tones just to get it to the same point as the $ 300 Yamaha I was using before. In the end I exchanged it for a new Yamaha 5-String. @Pinstripedtie I bought a used Am. Std JazzV off Talkbass and a set of Lakland pickups for ~$900 combined. Sounds fantastic, but even the Fender pickups were OK. These on this video sound like the Fenders, to me. As for the bridge, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it - don't waste your money on anything else. I've installed a number of high end bridges on different basses over the years and the Fender bridge is just as solid as any of those.

Tone is from the hands, not gear.

@Pinstripedtie Great call on the Stingray - EB/MM make the best Production-line Basses. If I had to start over, I'd be playing a few fretted and fretless Bongo 5 HS w/ piezos.

You'd be surprised regarding Sadowskys & Lulls. Less Ebay, but the $20 to become a "Supporting Member" @ Talkbass.com gives you access to the various "For Sale" forums where I got my "almost new" Mike Lull M4 & M5 for 1/2 their cost new as well as 3 of my Spectors. Plus it's a great place in general to, well, talk bass

@Pinstripedtie These days if you're going to spend $1400 on a new bass and $500 in upgrades before you play out, I'd seriously consider returning the Fender if possible and taking a close look at the Used Market. For almost two grand you could easily pick yourself up a near-mint Sadowsky Metro or Mike Lull, which would *kill* most non-Custom Shop Fenders. It's all about the Quality Control - Fender is EXTREMELY iffy, whereas a Lull or Sadowsky is 100%, every bass that leaves their shops.
