  • I love this group. Marcu Gilmore brings an element of surprise to music. He's really tight with the bass which you can clearly hear at around 4:25 and after. He's tight with the bass all the way through it's just more apparent at 4:25. Everything fits and the group is really tight without sounding analytical at all.

  • @plastiksporc pure metal is definitely a genre... which Lamb of God fall into. I don't think thw variety of music is the issue... its the lack of a tangible train of thought in the music.

  • @Teebs88 Just because you can't follow this doesn't mean that anyone who says that they can is contrived. Also sometimes music isn't about understanding. Open your mind to this and maybe you will see. This is inspirational in the deepest sense of the word.

  • srsly,

what i see here is Vijay already paved Jazz into new direction

    Real Innovation

  • Hey Teebs. You are a meathead. You are missing everything. I am really sorry for you. Truly.

  • How can you call this music? Honestly... i'm not bashing at all... i've been playing guitar for 6 years (started in blues, eventually started to play everything but travelled the furthest into blues and thrash metal) and drums for 2 now (totally influenced by John Bonham and Bill Ward)... however... this sounds like a totally random mishmash of notes. For anyone to say they can really follow this seems totally contrived. Maybe i'm missing something? Maybe I just like rock, blues and pure metal.

  • @Teebs88 yeah, you just haven't had enough musical variety in your life yet.

there is nothing such as "pure metal" or rock, both are broken up into countless sub genres

you just need to get out there and discover more music, expand your musical vocabulary. check out some classical music, different more accessible sub genres of jazz, electronic music and anything else that you can get your hands on. try to understand and appreciate these.

then in a year or so come back here and listen again.

  • @Teebs88 You are a doofus.

  • @Teebs88 nice trolling

  • @Teebs88 If you actually continue studying music to the fullest of your abilities, you should eventually get to a point where you can appreciate this. You might still not like it, but if you knew what they were accomplishing here you could at least appreciate it.

  • @simasuma I like to think I have a MUCH healthier understanding of music than the average listener. I also have a pretty hard line stance on what I like and i'm not against music like this... I just think there are greater songwriters out there in my opinion. Stuff that can stick with you a little more... the underlying grooves int he song where they are kicking it and have planned out something sound pretty solid... but sometimes it's just dissonance... and I guess you're supposed revere and

  • @Teebs88 respect madness. I also don't happen to like Primus... because of the way they make me feel... which is like i'm trying way too hard to listen to what's going on... when you hear and old Zeppelin record or Black Sabbath record it's not hard to get... and the feeling is strong.

Say what you all want... but it'd be better to describe the feeling you get/point of this song than just tell me what I know/don't know.

  • @Teebs88 No. You aren't supposed to revere and…. You are entitled to your opinion. My opinion was similar years ago. I started with John Bonham and Bill Ward as influences, but as I was introduced to this music through the back door via Mahavishnu and Return to Forever, then into Tony Williams/Elvin and further into the newer guys Brian Blade/Ari Hoenig/TyshwawnSorrey/etc. my mind opened more and more to what is happening here in this video. Obviously though, follow your heart.

  • Come see Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet with Vijay Iyer at the Angel City Jazz Festival at the Ford Amphitheater in LA on 10/3.

  • one of the most important jazz pianist in my opinion

  • This is the way a piano trio should sound - they relate so well, it's a conversation, a very interactive one.

  • If you want to hear rythms listen to Tony Bianco's Western Sense and learn.

  • go dig up some SunRA if you are talking about awesome rhythms....

  • Sheer Delight:)

  • goin to see them in April, it's gonna be a sick show

  • I agree this trio is badass. For me this is how I like to hear a piano trio today, really dealing with rhythm. If you like these kind of very staggered rhythms, I would recommend picking up a copy of James Hurt's "Dark Grooves, Mystical Rhythms". You can get it on Amazon for 1.99.

The stuff Hurt does with Ari Hoenig on drums is similar to this rhythmic interaction....Hurt has become kind of a forgotten figure but I think this record is very worthwhile. I'm sure Vijay probably feels the same.

  • @gsviews - Comment on your thoughts, that James Hurt album was released back in 1999, and James was performing that music around the city before that. Also the album included drummers eric mcpherson and nasheet waits. the album included hypnotic grooves, with interesting rhythmic cycles. that was a modern advanced concept he started........this here video reminds a little bit of barry astchul in the 70's and when i used to see braxton play free at the treehouse cafe by wesleyan.

  • Don't get me wrong, I think Rudresh Mahanthappa is bad as hell; But this trio shit? This shit is something *ELSE*.

    And Marcus Gilmore? Goddamn!

  • marcus gilmore truly is making his own path and carrying on the traditions of his grandfather Roy Haynes. Long live the Haynes legacy.

  • the best trio out there in my opinion

  • I'm glad to have this fair sample of some of Iyer's work (and the group). Thanks for putting it up.

  • awesome. this is at the stone right? did they let you video this or did you sneak it in? i go there all the time and have seen some of the craziest stuff and WISH i had video'd it to share with yal...

    thanks for the post

  • yeah dude.

  • very nice sh*t. the staggered groove is hot, and the middle section is pretty EPIC.

  • i love this music vijay! it's beautiful.
