  • This is a Broad-Winged Hawk. They are fairly common where I live here on the Oregon Coast.

  • (i.e. tail feathers) are significantly narrower than the black bands. On Broadwings, the black and white bands are of approximately the same width. Red-shouldereds also tend to have more striking black-and-white barring in their remiges (flight feathers of the wings). Finally, this bird is sitting on a wire. Most Broadwings I've seen have been deep in deciduous woods, though this may be a local phenomenon.

  • It's definitely a Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus). The reddish-brownish barring on the breast limits it to an adult individual belonging to one of 4 possible species (in the United States, anyway): Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, or the Red-shouldered Hawk. This bird's brown eyes automatically eliminated the first two, as accipiters never have brown eyes at any point in their lives. This cannot be a Broadwing either because the white bands on the rectrices
