Useful tips, Thank you! I'm preparing for my first halfmarathon, I run 10km 3 times a week, but I haven't known about interval training. I gotta check it xD
@NCISgirlz It depends, I run usually for 3.8 miles because it's a nice loop around my house but once a week I'll do a 5 mi loop and sometimes on Saturdays when it's nice out, I'll go as far as 7 if I'm not training for anything and don't have plans. I love a long easy jog.
I run every day between 3 and 10k and I do a 5k park race on a Saturday and I have improved from 32mins to 26mins in 2 months I am doing a 10km race for the harriers at the weekend ,I also did a half mathran in under 2hours I find that running has help me with stress love it !!
I run like I am playing shifts in Ice Hockey. I will start at 2.5 for a minute, then I will go to 4 for 5 mins, after that I start going to 5.5 to 6 for 2 mins and then I slow down to 3.5 to rest up and then I start running again at 5.5 to 6 again. I do this for 30-40 mins and by the time I am done though I am tired I am ready to go another 30 minutes!
Hey! Have you ever tried the maximus muscle 247 workout (do a google search)? Ive heard some great things about it and my friend gained a lot of muscle with it.
Hi, do you know how much one should run weekly for just general exercise? I'm not trying to become a pro runner or anything like that; just fit enough to feel healthy. thanks youre great
So running everyday consistently for a few weeks will do less visually to your body then doing intervals everyday for a few weeks? On flat ground I can do about 4.5 miles and on hills 2.0miles. But that's running al the way consistently... should I switch? I'm trying to reinvent myself this summer before class starts in the fall. I've ran consistently everyday for a week so far...
thank you for this! ii really wanted to try and stated running to loose weight, im 80 pounds over weight and a college student so the best and cheapest way for me to lose weight is the old fashion way is hard work! so I subscribed to you cause I love the routines that you do!
@poolplayer2093 Regarding your legs feeling weaker, as a beginner runner, assuming you haven't injured yourself, which you'd probably know, your legs should be tired. When you run, it's very normal to tear the muscles. Those tiny tears heal with new muscle and you become stronger. "Recovery" is the term used for the healing process. Depending on how quickly you recover in general, and what you've done to facilitate your recovery, you may be pushing too hard to soon and, thus, feeling weaker.
@poolplayer2093 Science support this but if you think about it, though you're working harder to run a mile than if you were to walk the same mile, you're doing it for proportionally less time. So, yes, you're burning more calories running than walking but doing it for less time. Tests have shown that the variability in calories burned lies in distance covered, not speed since speed and time are proportional (one goes up as the other goes down). Hope this helps.
With regards to calories burned, recent studies show that it doesn't matter how fast you go, calorie burn is more directly related to distance traveled. So whether you run or walk a given distance, you'll burn roughly the same calories over that distance either way.
That said, the amount of calories burned AFTER your workout will be greater in proportion to the increase in your heart rate and the duration it is increased due to an increased metabolic rate.
@MrRedRook i don't know the science behind it but that just doesn't sound right to me. just producing sweat would seem like it would take more energy then not so you'd have to be burning more calories running then walking
A.) The track workout you suggested is stupid. Leg turnover isn't developed in 100 meters. It takes at least twice that for your repetition pace to have any affect because of the myofacial buildup rates of your major running muscles. Even IF it could be done in 100 meters, you suggested two types of workouts for beginning runners (interval pace and repetition pace). You are begging your viewers to get hurt!
if your knees hurt, work on your form. there are lots of videos for running form to check out. you shouldn't be landing on your heel because this jolts your knees and hips. shoes won't reduce that much, improving your form is much better.
good interval tips in this video.
breathing: just breathe naturally, without forcing it. take deep breaths, down into your abdomen, not just up in your chest while sucking in your gut.
keep it up, you will go further and faster soon :)
i just started to run like yesterday... just started and i noticed that i lose my breath very quickly.... what is the proper way to breath while you run.... in thru nose out thru mouth?????? please help me
@missjoaquin4now That's right... in through your nose out through your mouth. Don't take fast breaths either... that will just give you cramps easier.
My goal right now is to just finish a 5k. I hope to one day work on making my times faster and faster. One step at a time. Great video! Thanks for the tips!
Hey I have a question. Im 13 and a pretty tall guy for my age and im overweight and cant run long how could I work on this and lose weight? I know you mentioned the couch to 5k but anything else?

@crazychik8921 What do you mean by embarrased? I used to but I got used to it. Find a good place where you know it is unlikely to see people you know. For example, in Vallejo I would go to the Benicia State Park rather than downtown at the Waterfront.
Hi Sarah, I just started running/jogging (1st time in my LIFE)...I wanted to know what type of running shoe you use? Right now the top of my foot feels bruised the day after I run =( ( I guess the correct term for that would be dorsal surface of my foot) Thanks!
I just watched your running tips video!! I just started running and when I run my chest burns from breathing too hard. Do you have any tips on breathing while running?
hey. I am not using a heart monitor, I'm still choosing which one to buy. I was wondering if there is any chance that I know when my hearbeat is too fast to be burning fat, WHILE I'm running?
tnx for the answer. and I would love it if you'd do another blogtv soon :)
I was wondering how to get rid of that fat right around the belly button area. It kind of is just a little square of chubbines right down the middle of my stomach :) And also, I need advice on what to do when I am the only person in my family who wants to eat healthy and be active but the rest of my family is unwilling to give up their junk food!! Any tips on how to fight temptations. Also, when are you going to do another live stream thing! I love them!! Thanks for all your time :)

Thanks for you tips! I actually started couch-to-5K program 6 weeks ago and it has been pretty good so far. But recently I find out that my right knee - it's always the right one - is feeling kind of uncomfortable after I run. It is not bad at all, just little bit uncomfortable. But still it makes me worried little bit. Is this normal to beginners? (This is my first time to run in my whole life!) or maybe my form is a problem..?
@hwasun3333 Yes, when was the last time you got new running sneakers? If you are younger (I don't know you age), I had this thing called "osgood slatters" (sp?) anyway, it was a bump right under my left knee and it hurt a lot. I had to get this band to apply pressure during sports between my knee and the bump. The pain went away. Ice it after your run if it hurts too.
I couldn't run a mile my WHOLE life...I did Couch to 5K last year and I ran my first 5k in July. It was such an amazing feeling. In May, I'll be doing my first 10k and I can't wait :)
i just started running for track and my ankles are killing me. Its been about 2 weeks that my ankles hurt to run and walk and jump. What should i do to make the pain go away?
The number of cuts in this video makes a disconnect, for me at least. Could you cut back on them? Maybe make a script or link your information together as opposed to splicing stuff in-between.
Nitpicking, I only mean it as advice. Peace and love.
i'm running my first 5k in about a month and i'm really excited because last year i tore my ACL and didn't think my knee would ever be the same or that i would ever be able to do this. thanks so much for these tips! they really help (:
I'm planning on attending some races, but they are all car races! Especially Drag Races. In fact, I've been to a track that isn't far from you Sarah, it's New England Dragway up in Epping, New Hampshire. I get tons of exercise walking around the pits.
Hey I'm looking to start working out but i mostly just want to tone up and loose a bit of fat, what would you suggest doing? long sessions or short sessions of each little thing
So i play soccer and im new to it so obviously the coach makes us run around the field but after like a lap around I have trouble breathing, what would you recommend if your running out of breath?( like and breathing tips or something)
Thank you for that couch to 5k advice. As a former runner that totally blew out my knees...my dreams of a marathon were pretty much shelved. This may be an option for me, that sounds worth checking into! I used to throw up too! :-p hahahahaha!
how can i stop throwing up after runninggg?

leetlepear18 6 months ago
@leetlepear18 yes it's very hard, if you stretch after you run, have proper shoes, and stay hydrated it shouldn't be too hard on your body
when you're running you feel like crap you might throw up, feel like you're going to shit yourself,
but if you keep running the pain starts to go away
walking is the worst thing you can do cause the pain will start to set in

Hi Sarah. Thanks for the running tips. Do you have any tips on the types of running shoes that are best for beginners?

Thank God someone finally answered how to begin running. I always feel stupid walking on the treadmill and then stupid-er when I try to run.

The number of cuts in this video makes a disconnect, for me at least. Could you cut back on them? Maybe make a script or link your information together as opposed to splicing stuff in-between.
Nitpicking, I only mean it as advice. Peace and love.

I'm planning on attending some races, but they are all car races! Especially Drag Races. In fact, I've been to a track that isn't far from you Sarah, it's New England Dragway up in Epping, New Hampshire. I get tons of exercise walking around the pits.

Hi pretty eyes :-)
Thank you for that couch to 5k advice. As a former runner that totally blew out my knees...my dreams of a marathon were pretty much shelved. This may be an option for me, that sounds worth checking into! I used to throw up too! :-p hahahahaha!
