never met stan. he always comes across like a huge prick, but his drum sound was so integral to the heartbreakers. he kills an unusual part on this song.... the whole band is AMAZING.
i liked this song when it origonally came out it sent a strong message and if it was redone as good as the origanal it would still give a strong message
Dave Stewart from the eurythmics and Tom wrote this one.....The original inspiration was a romantic encounter that Stewart had with Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac.[1] On The Howard Stern Show, Dave Stewart explained that the title's phrase was actually uttered by Stevie. She had broken up with Joe Walsh the night before[2], and invited Dave Stewart to her place for a party after an early Eurythmics show in Los Angeles...This is what Stevie said to Joe Walsh the next morning
man that what im talking about that last part was longg and that it should be in the orignal cd.. that was rod way a go .. damn im a big fan of tom petty
@thebayareapimp On the record, and sometimes in concert, Mike Campbell plays a Coral electric sitar to get that sound. It looks like he's getting the sound from a Rickenbacker 12-string here.
aww the drummer he new or something ? doesnt sound good.. i like the other old guy black guy he was way betterrrr and sound soo smooth .. this one it the drummer and sound terrible damn... i love that songs but not this one check out other live he did in paris live
I believe I read this song was a response to the drug dealing he was witnessing outside his apartment. And it also includes imagery a recovering addict would feel.
I may have some exeriance it this, and the feelings make complete sense.
I loooooove Tom Petty's sound. What a phenomenal musician/artist. I have to find my cd that iTunes destroyed when I did a MicroSoft update. I miss playing his songs on my iPhone.

Saw Tom Petty and Band years ago in San Diego. They dont play for 45 min. and say kissi my ass good bye. Three hours later you are Pettified. Thanks for the great music.
Does anyone know who and why they decided to leave this superb rendition of Don't Come Around Here no more outside of the Pack up the Plantation CD and only included it in the video?
I have the CD and there are at least a couple of songs that could have been left out if space was a concern.
Loved how he nicked this song for himself having given others so many of his songs.Glad he did because i couldnt see even the angelic stevie nicks doing a better version.Btw did he ever go out with nicks as she is gushing in her praise for him.btw this is a brilliant version of a brilliant song indeed. Thanks for posting and making a happy man very old.
I wish I was alive when this concert went on.. this whole concert seems so awesome. I went and saw him in august and it wasnt anywhere close to this... probably cuz hes 60 now :)
The last time i listened to this song it wasnt even on the radio or anything, in fact i was wandering around my town and in my head every time they said STOP! my body would turn into a splash of red paint and i would literally cease to exist for a moment... but i never stopped walking that night
this very song from poplar creek(chicago) in 1985 still stands in my memory and always will. I was just a kid then but I knew this was my music for the rest of my life.
I know Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have a hold on me when I comment on their videos and proceed to find my comment from a year earlier saying the same thing. They are awesome.
@scarface981 Lucky, i wanted to go, but i had no one to go with me becaue my mom didn't want me going alone. It's Tom Petty, there won't be any mosh pits >:(
@smackenurjunk, there are many great popular American singers and bands. Our music is very popular around the world, you can't deny that. I don't wanna come off as arrogant though. When I said "best music is American", I was just stating my own personal opinion. Tom Petty is a great singer, I grew up listening to him.
I just saw him last night this was fucking AWESOME one of the best shows I've been to in my life! The new songs didn't go over well at ALL this clearly did not please him he went "we're gonna do one more new song and then play nothing but hits the rest of the night!" and the audience ROARED. After it he did Learn to Fly and Refugee and ended the set! Then LONG wait then 3 song encore fucking AWESOME show! Crowd was nuts on this one thanks for posting!
I saw him last night at Oracle arena for the first time. So i accomplished one of my dreams. It was amazing. See him and the Heartbreakers when you get a chance.

I have trouble sleeping sometimes. I wake up at 0400 or so, and I remember, and the ghosts rise to haunt me.
So I got up this morning, showered and had breakfast. Sat down to burn a little rope and turned this video up a bit. It seems my neighbors objected to Tom Petty at dawn on a Saturday, and summoned the constabulary to express their displeasure.
Nothing like a talk with the gendarmes to start your day, LOL.
