This is a great pure NA car , a turbo would only drive up the price beyond many buyers price range. Will I buy one new? No . Maybe in a couple years I will get one used for 14k.
@garnettbobo 1 car, 3 brands. Subaru is more expensive but has more gizmos (push-button start) Toyota is cheaper, but less trimming. (Don't care, sports cars are not supposed to look like xmas trees) And Toyota slaps a scion badge in America, but it's the same car.
Continued... even if the rpms hit almost the rev limiter or it just doesn't let you shift down? One more thing lets say the car is now in 4th gear but you are going around 25mph can you step on the throttle all the way and it still remains in fourth or does it automatically switch to first/second gear? Thank you for your time,
Please read the comment underneath before reading this one.
I want to know something about the shifting on the automatic in sport mode. My first question is this, lets say for example you have it in 1st gear and you drive to the rev limit do you have the control to change it or does the car automatically shift itself? My next question is are both cars around the same speed, or is the MT a bit faster? I'm guessing the handling is about the same, but another question is lets say the car is in 2nd gear can you downshift into first even if the rpms hit ...
@theuknowme1 Only idiot would buy an automatic. It has not enough power to begin with - auto looses more power and will make car dull to drive.
No idea why so much hipe - FR-S is just a cheep version of RX-8, great handling car with not enough power, but in fr-s case cheep interior. It will be only fun on the track, boring as daily driver.
It needs turbo to be a fun day to day driver and priced $26k with turbo. For $26k you can get Genesis r-spec 275hp + much better interior.
@andbudzi If there is one thing that modern drivers need to know, is that hp doesn't dictate how fun a car is. Rewind 20-30 years ago when Toyota released the Corolla coupe in 1986 with state-of-the-art DOHC 16 valve 1.6l engine, the car only made 140hp. Still weak by any standards. The charm about it was the car's simplicity, lightweight design, low price and above all, the way it responds to the driver. Toyota is trying hard to achieve such goal with the FR-S/GT86, and it looks good.
hey guys im going to be in the market for a new car here in about a month and have researched this vehicle for a while now. i was curious... did they give you a release date?
What an annoying video. Start, stop, wait. Start, stop, wait. Start, stop, wait. Like driving a car that only stays on for twenty seconds at a time. I have a good internet connection, too.
@armedwithturtles In Japan, and parts of Europe I believe, it is marketed as a Toyota and Subaru, while the Subaru is also marketed here in the USA, along with Scion, which is just a sub-brand of Toyota, targeting young people.
It was a co-development project between Toyota and Subaru, so hence the double branding. Subaru handled mechanics, Toyota did styling.
The FT-86 is classic, light weight sports car design. I am glad Toyota released this in the US market, but it's a shame that it's a badged as a Scion... the brand is not impressive to say the least.
They test drive it with an auto tranny look for the magazine.... Otherwise im not inlove with the subaru flat engine cuz im a Toyota fan but its for better handling , btw the car looks great,200bhp Allmotor(Non-Turbo)maybe 170(80)Rwhp on just 2700pounds!!!! I have a Toyota Tercel here in Puerto Rico wth an almost stock 2zz 04matrix ecu 6500rpms vvtLi I/ch/e 170-80Fwhp 3300pounds and the best time on drag 13:4 wth cheap street tires.... So i thnk i will forgive Toyota bcause of the suba engine
I'd love to get my hands on this and doo all sorts of things. Cams, timing, remapping ecu lighter rods and shafts suspension mmmmm suspension. But i wanna hear that boxer burble :D
@Javierm0n0 What exactly are lighter rods going to accomplish??? LOL. The FA is already a high comp, high revving motor, so you'll most likely need new +1mm valves, and new guides as well as springs to properly utilize the cams. Cobb will have an accessport for the BRZ anyway, which is the best option besides standalone, which will run you 5x the price! The best thing to do would be to get forged rods, low comp pistons and slap a turbo on it for power.
An .82AR GT3076 should compliment this flat 4 pretty well at around 20psi. My only concern is the plastic intake manifold. That scares me quite a bit... If I end up getting one, Im gonna get a nice set of KW's 17" Rota Grids with fat tires, weld up my own chasis braces, delete the rear seat, and gut the trunk. That should shave off another 100-200 pounds or soo. On top of that weld up my own exhaust ridding of those suite case mufflers, with one 4" resonator, and one Borla muffler
@kyle7300 with 2.5" tubing. Look into making headers and utilize a hf cat. This car is a perfect building block. Its small, light, decent motor. Im just curious to see how long it takes for people to start doing LS9 swaps..
@kyle7300 Can you quote that from COBB?? I was talking to one of their engineers and I was under the impression they only focus on turbo cars :( but that's not a problem if they come out w/ a turbo version ;)
@Lyrical00Messiah most likely because those cars are, by opinion of the enthusiasts who love them, amazing in the handling department. And the FR-S, BRZ FT-86, is supposed to kick some major ass in that department. Granted they have more power but power means nothing at a 20 mph turn when you've just come from 80 on a back straight. I wouldn't agree with civic class but Genisis definitely. I can see where your coming from. What about the miata?
@Lyrical00Messiah He was comparing the center of gravity to more expensive performance cars. Although with that said, it was still a bad comparison because those are much larger cars with turbochargers and intercoolers (higher engines).
@McFly2015AD The 2.5L turbo boxer sounds obnoxious to me. This sounds smoother and more like a Mitsubishi. Not great but I still prefer it over the grumbly Subarus.
@TheSupercat2468 Most likely not a mechanical throttle...very few cars coming out have that (none as far as I know but I'm probably wrong somewhere) but ya from what test drives have shown, all your electronic nannys can be turned off!! :)
Exactly the kind of car I am looking for: four cylinder, coupe (hardtop, no bullcrap), rear wheel drive, agile, nimble, under 3,000 pounds and 30,000 dollars. Sold!
@katanamast279 Automatic climate control and push button start are probably only going to be found on the Subaru BRZ. The Subaru BRZ will also feature upgraded headlights too. Of course, these premiums will come at a higher price than the base model Scion FR-S.
The question is.. how does the auto gearbox shift ? Does it feel like a 10y old BMW auto gearbox or does it have more like almost a DSG feel to it ? I sure will testdrive both, but I haven't found a clear answer to my question yet.
I want to hear the upshift speed, hear the rev match when downshifting!!
@oLongshot As you already seem to be aware, the Scion FR-S auto box does not incorporate dual clutches. Instead, this box uses an electronically controlled lock-up converter that is fully-locked up about 90-percent of the time. If you've driven the newest IS-F, the shifting feel is very similar (much better than original IS-F too). We were very impressed with the shift quality. We think you'll like it, but drive both to be sure.
Man, you guys are lucky! I'm sure some of you would resent that as I'm sure it takes more work than I can imagine to be an automotive journalist, but seriously, you guys get to test some of the coolest cars and parts and help people like me make an informed decision! Go DSport!
@PhantomGett Thanks. We just started to build better bridges with the OEMs to get the invites to the events. Based on the success of the videos and magazine coverage, we are on the top of the list to get more invites. In February, we'll go out to Nevada to test drive the improved-power Genesis Coupes.
Also what people don't get is that faster =/= more fun. Grippier wider tires for example mean it takes that much more speed/work to get it to break traction. If you think brute speed is what makes a car fun, go buy a used Pontiac (Holden) GTO, or a V6 Mustang.
looks more like some newer version of a rx8. i dont like the final build the concept car is the design they shouldve stuck too that wouldve been worth the 25k.its to boring looking and bland now and has no clue sounding exhaust note what so ever.
@TheMiles302 yeap and im sure the looks will grow on me they always do. know that i think about it the concept may have been to much and wouldve went againt what scion stands for and are known for which is to deliever a fun sports car or just a car for people like us to build upon and turn into something truely amazing from all aspects of performance and looks.so by scion keeping the final build simple yet with enough looks and performance for its class to appeal to the mass they achived
In June, our plan is to test the FR-S/BRZ against a number of current and older FR (front-engine, rear wheel drive platforms).
Based on our initial test driving session of the FR-S, we were impressed. Is it better than a Genesis Coupe? Hands down, the FR-S is better than the 2.0T. The weight problem with that vehicle kills the fun. As for the Genesis 3.8 Coupe, accel tests would likely deliver like results, but the FR-S is definitely more nimble and fun to throw around a racetrack.
@Suesky Whatttttttttttt???? Dude the Integra is a drag car not a mans car, and the GT86 will win anyway in a drag race and it will make circles in a tack. And it depends of the year but the jap version the DC5 Type R K20A 220 hp (164 kW) 2.0 L DOHC i-VTEC is the fastest and weights 2,790 pounds, thats 190 pounds more and is frontdrive (rear drive has the start advantage) so no, the Toyota 86 will eat it for lunch!!
@Suesky Why? That's a front wheel drive car that isn't even made anymore. Not really worth comparing IMO. The S2000, RX-8, MX-5, 370Z, or Genesis Coupe would make better comparisons.
In the beginning i was all about going and getting this car if they would have stayed anywhere close to the beautiful concept car but no. Not even close. ended up being ugly. At 25k i will pass. What a let down. I will just stick with my Lexus.
@jfallaw06 I agree with everything you said except the Lexus part. I will get me a g35/g37/328i coupe/ 335i twin turbo/ m3. The concept car looked beyond Beautiful but now it looks like another wanna be sports car.
@fastblasterxxx it isn't. but MAYBE subaru will release a turbocharged STI version as they've teased. But they never confirmed it would be turbo nor if it will go to production
Ken Gushi is being used to attract young buyers/street racers. He is getting paid to make the car seem beast and similar to the ae86 and subaru sti. Scion is releasing the Fr-s sooner because Subaru will release the BRZ first. Scion is afraid that scion customers will go for the "Subaru"(better reputation) instead of cheap scion.
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe i got a gencoupe too but youre retarded if you think this car wont be a decent competitor. theyre keeping this car just under 3k lbs, thats 400lbs less than your 3.8. they only drawback i see is that theyre talking about pricing it at 25k, while the 2.0t gencoupe is at 22-23 base.
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe This is the base version, subaru and toyota are releasing faster versions with over 300hp. You can't just drop a turbocharger in the car without redisigning the chasis, or you will ruin the low cog and compromise the handling which makes the car fun to drive. That will only increase this cars chances of winning a drag race.
@shikori7 No. Neither Subaru, nor Scion/Toyota are releasing versions with more power. There will not be a turbocharged version available. We predict that may change in two or three years, if Subaru decides to offer an STI version. The turbocharged version of this F20 engine will be used in the new WRX. This uses a low-mount, front-position turbocharger which would likely not affect the COG.
The car gives 200hp @ 7000 rpm. Drivers will have to be Hitting redline all the time to only get 200 ponies. The car suckz even with greddy exhaust it doesn't even sound powerful. I don't see any smoke coming out in any of the vids.
The FRS will be the North American version of the Toyota GT86, badged under the Scion division of Toyota. Scion's purpose is to bring fun-to-drive vehicles to market without pricing themselves out of a younger buyers reach by repositioning their own vehicles content focus.
I wouldn't be surprised if the North American models don't have automatic climate control / automatic headlights / HID headlamps. But as always for Scion a central focus on build-ability and customization will be prevalent.
@DRFTmonkeh its a lie because scion wants you to run like an idiot to buy the car as soon as its available and they are doing what they have to do to make money. Or else subaru is beating them.
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe everyone wants their cars sold. everyone makes advertisements that present the better aspects of their car. that doesn't make it a lie. if ken gushi says the car has a lot of grip, it probably does. you're delusional.
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe At 2700lbs and 200hp, i would expect it to stick to the road like it's glued to it... Evidently you don't know the common laws of physics, lol.
Love this car but I told myself I will NEVER EVER BUY A N/A CAR ever again. Living in CA I would never be able to get much more performance and still be smog legal. I will hold my breath for a turbo version or just move on.
it looks to be an interesting platform, in it's stock trim and it's current specs that you guys managed to pull out, it could be a serious contender.
maybe sooner or later when prior or during release we can see some serious modifications to see its potential... will it do the same if not better than the hyundai genesis coupe?!
though idk much about some of these current platforms and i have yet to build my own car up
we will just see... like always i'll keep reading dsport
@colenbrak imo you can't really compare the two. the gen coupe is like a foot and a half longer (166in vs 182in), and weighs about 600lbs more (2700lbs vs 3300lbs). the scion is a small compact car while the genesis is a large coupe. the FR-S will be faster in a straight line (~6.5s vs 6.9s) and generally offer better handling, but entry price will be more than the 2.0T genesis. if you're going to compare it to anything, the mazda MX-5 is the most similar to the FR-S
hate to break it to you but no factory 2.0T will get 0-60 in 6.1s. the 3.8 barely makes it in that time. check your own shit before you tell someone to check theirs
@alitap well yeah small aesthetic details that dont really matter. more importantly they are mechanically the same, but marketed under different brands.
This is a great pure NA car , a turbo would only drive up the price beyond many buyers price range. Will I buy one new? No . Maybe in a couple years I will get one used for 14k.

Also what people don't get is that faster =/= more fun. Grippier wider tires for example mean it takes that much more speed/work to get it to break traction. If you think brute speed is what makes a car fun, go buy a used Pontiac (Holden) GTO, or a V6 Mustang.
shikori7 2 months ago
looks more like some newer version of a rx8. i dont like the final build the concept car is the design they shouldve stuck too that wouldve been worth the 25k.its to boring looking and bland now and has no clue sounding exhaust note what so ever.
jkbowens100 2 months ago
@jkbowens100 all cars have a problem with their looks, our job is to mod them.
TheMiles302 2 months ago
@TheMiles302 yeap and im sure the looks will grow on me they always do. know that i think about it the concept may have been to much and wouldve went againt what scion stands for and are known for which is to deliever a fun sports car or just a car for people like us to build upon and turn into something truely amazing from all aspects of performance and looks.so by scion keeping the final build simple yet with enough looks and performance for its class to appeal to the mass they achived

this guy is comparing this car to a gtr...... fml
ashuford5 2 months ago
@ashuford5 Why fml? If anything that's great that a $25ish sports car is being compared to one of, if not the best super cars ever made.

As for the Genesis 3.8 Coupe, accel tests would likely deliver like results, but the FR-S is definitely more nimble and fun to throw around a racetrack.
dsportmag 2 months ago 6
@dsportmag Better than the Genesis coupe 2.0 T 2013? which has twin scroll Turbo close to 80 HP more ??? are u freacking kidding me?
pedro125252 1 month ago
@dsportmag This car should compete with civics not Genesis coupe.
pedro125252 1 month ago
@dsportmag The power increases for the upcoming Genesis models should help move the weight around a bit better.

@Hopxy I agree
ilovemyGenesisCoupe 2 months ago
If you think the v6 is slow then when you drive the frs your going to think its slow like a Corolla.
ilovemyGenesisCoupe 2 months ago
i wanted to see this FR-S go up head to head with the Integra Type R...
Suesky 2 months ago 2
@Suesky Whatttttttttttt???? Dude the Integra is a drag car not a mans car, and the GT86 will win anyway in a drag race and it will make circles in a tack. And it depends of the year but the jap version the DC5 Type R K20A 220 hp (164 kW) 2.0 L DOHC i-VTEC is the fastest and weights 2,790 pounds, thats 190 pounds more and is frontdrive (rear drive has the start advantage) so no, the Toyota 86 will eat it for lunch!!
EdboyAE86 2 months ago
@Suesky Both cars are crap...
19dcscout 2 months ago
@Suesky but the integra is fwd??
metaljar02 1 month ago
@Suesky Why? That's a front wheel drive car that isn't even made anymore. Not really worth comparing IMO. The S2000, RX-8, MX-5, 370Z, or Genesis Coupe would make better comparisons.

In the beginning i was all about going and getting this car if they would have stayed anywhere close to the beautiful concept car but no. Not even close. ended up being ugly. At 25k i will pass. What a let down. I will just stick with my Lexus.
jfallaw06 2 months ago
@jfallaw06 I was the same as you but now am getting a beautiful 328i coupe with saddle brown interior. for 17k
ilovemyGenesisCoupe 2 months ago
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe It does stick to the road like glue as many reviewers have been saying.
shikori7 2 months ago
@jfallaw06 I agree with everything you said except the Lexus part. I will get me a g35/g37/328i coupe/ 335i twin turbo/ m3. The concept car looked beyond Beautiful but now it looks like another wanna be sports car.

Anybody know if it's turbocharged?
fastblasterxxx 2 months ago
@fastblasterxxx it isn't. but MAYBE subaru will release a turbocharged STI version as they've teased. But they never confirmed it would be turbo nor if it will go to production

Ken Gushi is being used to attract young buyers/street racers. He is getting paid to make the car seem beast and similar to the ae86 and subaru sti. Scion is releasing the Fr-s sooner because Subaru will release the BRZ first. Scion is afraid that scion customers will go for the "Subaru"(better reputation) instead of cheap scion.
ilovemyGenesisCoupe 2 months ago
Drop a nice turbo & exhaust on that v6 genesis coupe and you will get over 440 ponies and over 380 torque. Thats Beast!!
ilovemyGenesisCoupe 2 months ago
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe i got a gencoupe too but youre retarded if you think this car wont be a decent competitor. theyre keeping this car just under 3k lbs, thats 400lbs less than your 3.8. they only drawback i see is that theyre talking about pricing it at 25k, while the 2.0t gencoupe is at 22-23 base.
senorcrazyeyes 2 months ago
@senorcrazyeyes i agree with what youre saying to that guy but i thought the 3.8 is 3400lbs. the FR-S is only 2700, so 700lb diff?
DRFTmonkeh 2 months ago
@senorcrazyeyes It might compete after they drop a nice turbo on it
ilovemyGenesisCoupe 2 months ago
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe This is the base version, subaru and toyota are releasing faster versions with over 300hp. You can't just drop a turbocharger in the car without redisigning the chasis, or you will ruin the low cog and compromise the handling which makes the car fun to drive. That will only increase this cars chances of winning a drag race.
shikori7 2 months ago
@shikori7 No. Neither Subaru, nor Scion/Toyota are releasing versions with more power. There will not be a turbocharged version available. We predict that may change in two or three years, if Subaru decides to offer an STI version. The turbocharged version of this F20 engine will be used in the new WRX. This uses a low-mount, front-position turbocharger which would likely not affect the COG.
dsportmag 2 months ago
The car gives 200hp @ 7000 rpm. Drivers will have to be Hitting redline all the time to only get 200 ponies. The car suckz even with greddy exhaust it doesn't even sound powerful. I don't see any smoke coming out in any of the vids.
ilovemyGenesisCoupe 2 months ago
I hate rebadging. it makes me to search for the same car videos with different names...
vitessemeister 2 months ago
The FRS will be the North American version of the Toyota GT86, badged under the Scion division of Toyota. Scion's purpose is to bring fun-to-drive vehicles to market without pricing themselves out of a younger buyers reach by repositioning their own vehicles content focus.
I wouldn't be surprised if the North American models don't have automatic climate control / automatic headlights / HID headlamps. But as always for Scion a central focus on build-ability and customization will be prevalent.

U can buy a decent used gs350 with that price. Go Vip ! The classy chick magnet.
silviasboy 2 months ago
the front looks like a mix of a mazdaspeed 3 and 370z, and the back looks like the genesis coupe.
TheRealJosan 2 months ago
With 25k I can get me the ultimate 07-09 335i twin turbo/ 05-07 M3/ G37 and many more. If it's going to get priced that high. Screww Scion then!!!!
ilovemyGenesisCoupe 2 months ago
I would like know how much is Ken Gushi getting paid to lie about the FR-s. "Omg this thing sticks to the road like a beast" BUllshit!!
ilovemyGenesisCoupe 2 months ago
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe why is that a lie? how would you know? did you visit this vid just to hate on the car?
DRFTmonkeh 2 months ago
@DRFTmonkeh its a lie because scion wants you to run like an idiot to buy the car as soon as its available and they are doing what they have to do to make money. Or else subaru is beating them.
ilovemyGenesisCoupe 2 months ago
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe everyone wants their cars sold. everyone makes advertisements that present the better aspects of their car. that doesn't make it a lie. if ken gushi says the car has a lot of grip, it probably does. you're delusional.
DRFTmonkeh 2 months ago
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe genesis coupe is so shit...my dad has one and its pretty damn slow even though its the v6 model
joeymountain 2 months ago
@ilovemyGenesisCoupe At 2700lbs and 200hp, i would expect it to stick to the road like it's glued to it... Evidently you don't know the common laws of physics, lol.

Base model 25k is too much 19-20k is good

Love this car but I told myself I will NEVER EVER BUY A N/A CAR ever again. Living in CA I would never be able to get much more performance and still be smog legal. I will hold my breath for a turbo version or just move on.
tgafire87 2 months ago
it looks to be an interesting platform, in it's stock trim and it's current specs that you guys managed to pull out, it could be a serious contender.
maybe sooner or later when prior or during release we can see some serious modifications to see its potential... will it do the same if not better than the hyundai genesis coupe?!
though idk much about some of these current platforms and i have yet to build my own car up
we will just see... like always i'll keep reading dsport

thoughts vs. gen coupe?
colenbrak 2 months ago
@colenbrak imo you can't really compare the two. the gen coupe is like a foot and a half longer (166in vs 182in), and weighs about 600lbs more (2700lbs vs 3300lbs). the scion is a small compact car while the genesis is a large coupe. the FR-S will be faster in a straight line (~6.5s vs 6.9s) and generally offer better handling, but entry price will be more than the 2.0T genesis. if you're going to compare it to anything, the mazda MX-5 is the most similar to the FR-S
DRFTmonkeh 2 months ago
@DRFTmonkeh i dunno about more expensive... and i'm going to compare the 2 because they are both asian sport coupes with 2.0 t's
colenbrak 2 months ago
@DRFTmonkeh hate to break it to you but a base model 2.0t genesis coupe gets 6.1 0-60. check your shit.

Edmunds_ 6.9s (Base)

hate to break it to you but no factory 2.0T will get 0-60 in 6.1s. the 3.8 barely makes it in that time. check your own shit before you tell someone to check theirs

what is the difference between the frs and gt86
alitap 2 months ago
@alitap the FR-S is sold as a scion in the US, the GT86 is sold as a toyota in europe.
DRFTmonkeh 2 months ago
@DRFTmonkeh no i think there are more difference than that, small details like headlights and alot of them
alitap 2 months ago
@alitap well yeah small aesthetic details that dont really matter. more importantly they are mechanically the same, but marketed under different brands.
