lets just take anyone over 6ft 3 out of the nhl...*sarcasm* it really comes down to the person who made that pass not being aware that the penalty was ending and giving him a suicide pass
And anyone who believes his bullshit or believes this was not intentional is excessively gullible and is probably a below average performer in the arena of life. Regardless of what the rules are or how they are interpreted, or how hits like this are broken down to the tenth degree, whats gleamingly obvious is that there is intent to harm, and that is really what's important. Fucking retards, stick to NASCAR.
Gleam, a small beam or glow of light, exp reflected light, a BRIEF or DIM indication, To be manifested or indicated BRIEFLY or FAINTLY. good word. Also pretty sure not actually a word. i.e gleamingLY? If you know anything about hockey you would know its kinda difficult at times for tall players like Joe not to take off a shorter player's head when they are looking down. Look at the height difference between the two. Still not advocating the hit but stick to mocking NASCAR
@danynumero6 I meant that as a continuation of my other post. What I meant to say was that the guy who gave him the pass should have been suspended. That's a big fine at the rookie party.
i remember they taught us in about... oh Novice Single A. Yeah that was it, about 14 years ago for me when i got my first taste of contact hockey don't look at a pass in your skates - take a look around for someone. and definitely dont do what perron did.
this is houseleauge and novice shit boys if you have a problem with it you're going to have to take hitting out of the game. 6'4 man hits smaller guy with his head down WAS the cause of the injury and not a dirty play.
Its unfortunate that Perron got hurt but that was not a hit to the head nor was there intent to injury Perron. Thornton keeps his elbow and shoulder down and close to his body and his face and the way he tries to lean away from Perron shows no Intent to hit him. Perron was hurt and thats terrible but this was a clean hit.
So what if Perron had is head down, you clearly see Thornton's shoulder move upward towards Perron's head. Go watch other dirty plays by Thornton you will see he is truly becoming a very dirty player and I hope someone teaches him a lesson soon!
Blues fan here...I know little bit about suffering as a Blues fan. I disagree with this call. I wouldn't call that a blind side hit and I definitely wish it was because they called it as such. It never appeared that Joe was trying to injure anymore than any other hit. If anyone has real questions about illegal hits, talk to Todd "I'll break your neck" Bertuzzi. He's a pretty leading source on how to hit illegally.
Clear intent to go for the head only without any intent of playing the body. This year Jumbo would have been suspended and fined. Too bad Shanny didn't take his position as rules enforcer last year. It's a clear intent to injure.
@teddydaniels aren't all hits? sheesh wake up to the world that is hockey, the main thing is this was a fair hit, perron had his head down and therefore deserved to be punished. Unless you would rather watch a league of players all skating with their heads down.
@NHLArchive Whether a player has his head up or down no longer matters. Targeting and the point of contact is what matters. Guys like Brendon Shanahan, who played in the league, now acknowledge that a direct hit to the head is bad for the players, bad for the NHL, and bad for hockey. The point is hit the body don't go for the head. Don't be a headhunter. It's hard to argue otherwise when you have hall of fame NHLers seeing it that way too.
@teddydaniels stevens doesn't think that, and he is the greatest of all time, great hitters don't head hunt, but head contact is a side effect of many big hits, that is the way it is. And if a guy having his head down leads to a situation where he gets hit in the head, so be it, that is not bad for hockey that teaches you not to skate with you head down which is the worst flaw of hockey.
Scott Stevens would have played half of his career games if he played in todays NHL dude loved head shots and that isn't cool in todays NHL. Shanny would have a field day on Scott Stevens
@TheRenegadeSniper scott stevens also never left his feet or raised his elbow, he jsut hit guys so hard that they had to be concussed, stevens is one of the greatest players of all time and had he been suspended much we woudl have missed out on it
@NHLArchive Concussions are bad for hockey, you're an idiot if you think that ruining players' lives and careers is beneficial for the game. This was a clear target of the head, it wasn't a "result" of a big hit. This was a cheap frustration decision because at this game (i was there) the sharks were getting massacred. The blues had all the possession, and were off to the best start in franchise history. This hit derailed the entire season. Thornton should have missed 20 games.
@NHLArchive What is so great about a player who hits to injure... to end careers. Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Sydney Crosby, Brett Hull... These are the kind of player who truly are some of the greatest players of all time.
@NHLArchive This is ridiculous. Hits aren't made to injure, they are supposed to be an intent to hurt and intimidate by the same occasion. NOT injure.
@elms91 it isn't dirty, you can say that hitting shouldn't be a part of the game because it can cause injury, but you cannot call this hit dirty, it was totally fair and perron could have easily avoided it.
@NHLArchive well I wouldn't say hitting should be eliminated altogether, it's an integral part of the game. I don't see how Perron could have "easily" avoided it; but understanding how youtube works, we both know that we won't be able to settle this so I'm just going to leave it at that
@elms91 he had his head down staring at the puck, it is plain and simple, don't look down there. His teammates could have warned him, given him a better pass. Seriously you are not seeing this. Really? It was still a clean hit, Thornton did nothing to purposely try to concuss Perron.
@NHLArchive Ok if you want to keep this going....Thornton clearly lowered his shoulder at Perron's head. If his intentions were purely clean we both know he would've protested getting tossed; he was totally compliant with it because he knew that he deserved it
@elms91 that is your supporting evidence? lol. No player intentionally goes out there to concuss a guy. Was he trying to crush him? Yeah, but he did it in a clean manner. Yes there was head contact but Joe is a big man and all of the replays show that he hit him all over, not just in the head. He could have done some even more major damage if he was actually trying to hurt perron, such as throwing an elbow, charging him, ect...
@NHLArchive I would say that taking a guy out for a whole season and then some is pretty major damage. I can see by your other comments that you're a hit-lover, and you'll always support the hard hitters of the game. While hockey is a rough sport and accidents happen, this was a dirty hit. He was pissed that he had already gotten a penalty and he clearly took it out on the first guy he could. Thornton is fast becoming one of the dirtier players in the league, watch some other vids
@elms91 Clean hits can cause injury, even incidental ones. How long Perron was injured has nothing to do with how dirty it was. There is no penalty for taking your anger out on someone. Thornton can be dirty but he didn't do anything devious here. That is just a standard bodycheck. Sure the injury was unfortunate but the only way to prevent injury in the NHL is to ban hitting and require more padding and rethink the material of the boards and even the playing surface.
@elms91 and i normally do not support thornton, in fact on of the few players I really dislike, and I like perron, but in this situation it was a clean collision. Do you ever see me defending Matt Cooke's hit on Savard or Doughty's repeated crosschecks that he has been giving out, or kaleta headbutting someone? No.
@elms91 I'm really not seeing your argument, here, that this was a dirty hit. Thornton could've easily made it even bigger hit than he did by skating towards Perron (thus increasing the relative velocity). 100% of the force of the hit came from Perron. He was looking backwards for the pass that everyone in the game is told not to make from the time that they're 6. Thornton played it very gently. He didn't aim for the head, didn't leave the ice, and didn't blow him up with an elbow or a stick.
Joe Thornton is 6'4" and David Perron is around 5'10. Joe Thornton is not a dirty player. He has no history of this and he wouldn't start during a November game against the irrelevant St. Louis Blues.
@teddydaniels Wrong. As Jumbo has said, and you can see in several of the angles, he was trying to get his shoulder out of the way, so that he wouldn't come into direct contact. Check the video at :40.
Wow that's the first time I have seen Todd McLellan really irate, and actually loose his cool a little to a ref. Dan Boyle also had some arguments to the refs.
@hockeygirl5774 the puck was in Perron's feet, how can you say there was no play around him? Perron is going to be back in time for the next season. He is schedueled to rejoin the team today actually. The commentators are making it seem an inocent hit because it was. Thornton stepped right out of the pentalty box, saw a player with the puck near him, and delivered the hit. It was 100% coincidental. If Thornton wasn't so much taller than Perron and coming in at such an awkward angle it would hav
screw U Thornton.there was absolutly no play round perron! now Perron will probably never play hockey again! im a blues fan,& he was one of my fav players.I hate how the commentators are making it seem like thornton is so inocent!
@gonotredame40 people try to use this argument but when the pace is as fast as the nhl sometimes split second decisions don't work as well as planned, it was a fair hockey hit, if perron isn't staring at the puck he isn't kod. IT IS THAT SIMPLE, quit picking through miniscule things.
Saying Perron perhaps did a bit of acting is a stupid thing to say. Perron isn't even expected to be able to start THIS season. Must be one hell of an actor
The debate about whether it was a blindside, "dirty" or north/south hit is largely irrelevant. The fact is if I intend to deliver a crushing, punishing hit to a vulnerable opponent, then there is plenty of leeway within the rules to do so legally.
The rules are not the problem. Nowadays the players are simply all too willing to advance their careers at the expense of delivering brain injuring hits to vulnerable opponents (hello Raffi Torres).
@GorterPoss yes you did, watch marty lapointe, he had some classic blindsides, steve webb, even forsberg killed niewendyk on a blindside. This hit is nothing compared to some of those classics.
Joe were in the box. Perron knews there's were 4 Players on the ice. Unexpected a big joe comes out of the box and giving a perron hit. Shoulder to head. Just pretty like what Patrice Comier done to Mikael Tam.. Just think twice, we are all the same humans with fragile head.
sorta cheesey hit but perron shoulda known that thorton was comin out of the box, perron having his head tuned lookin for pass was bad but size also played a factor.
This is just like the hit when Brent Sopel drilled Dave Scatchard in the '06-07 season...no suspension because Scatchard got right back up...this is a PERFECTLY CLEAN hit. If Perron had his head up he woulda braced himself. Every NHLer should just skate with their head down now, that way they can never be hit legally... right? fuckin bullshit. The NHL is quickly going downhill.
I like how radio broadcasters and many spectators claimed that Perron could have faked it because he scored a goal afterwords when David is still having symptoms of the concussion today. So ridiculous
being out for possibly 2 seasons for a hit like this is unheard of. I have seen way bigger hits in the league than this and guys missed a few months and came back, this guy just needs to either suck it up and realize this isn't soccer or retire and go play sissy soccer with the nilly lions in europe, suck it up already and this is coming from a blues fan.....
Perron took a bad pass at his skates, which is why he had his head down. He didn't see Thornton because when he checked the ice 2 seconds before, Thonrton wasn't there. Thornton came in from the side and would have made a clean hit, but his shoulder made initial contact with Perron's head. That is a penalty and suspension according to the league's new rule since the hit came from a lateral position. This really was a textbook call.
Well to all the people that think perron is acting are idiots cause perron hasn't played a single game since and after recent tests done by doctors his career may be over. If I was on the blues, I'd def go after thornton next season bc the blues may have just lost a star player...
Personally I think Thorton is a piece of shit. Regardless of what you think though between this and Crosby expect a massive crackdown on headshots next year.
"I don't think he sees him though.." What the fuck are these announcers looking at? Thornton is a thug...he was looking right at him. Slammed his shoulder right into his face. There are other, "cleaner" ways to take a guy out. Thornton was coming out of the box...he saw Perron skating up the ice..and charged out into him. If you see it any other way...you're a complete fucking idiot.
@TheATrain421 Joe was skating back to the bench and braced himself for the hit.. not his fault Perron's head was at his shoulder level, or Perron wasn't even paying attention, you sir are the complete fucking idiot
@link1567 braced himself for the hit? what fucking play are you watching dip shit? he clearly leveled himself to hit Perron. He had a clear view of the play developing...he knew what he was doing. I've played hockey for over 15 years. I've done it plenty of time. It's bullshit when I do it...and it's bullshit when Thornton's punk ass does it. Deal with.
These announcers are idiots, as well. Matt Cooke "stepped in front of" Marc Savard, too. The rule targets blindside AND LATERAL hits with the head as the principle point of contact. There's not much difference between this and the Cooke/Savard hit other than the hitter's reputation.
Clean hit. It's not Thorton's fault he's so tall. It DOES catch his head but it's Perron's fault for not knowing Thorton for coming out of the box. That's a bullshit major call. NHL is turning into a non contact sport.
No doubt this is a blind sight hit... he comes from the penalty box , which makes a 90 degrees angle with perron's direction. Even if he hits him front to front, he came from the blind sight.
Perron was trying to play the puck coming towards him. How often do people come jumping out of the walls to hit your from your blind side in the middle of a hockey game? I'd be willing to bet none. Don't give me that crap about Perron putting himself in a dangerous position. Thornton has the right to hit him there, but he needs to realize where all parts of his own body are at the time. He's bigger than Perron and hitting him high when he's in a vulnerable spot is clearly dangerous.
@c001guy99 my thought exactlly, big joe gets punished for that and chara breaks a guys neck and gets nothing???Bettmen said"well punishing chara wont change what happened"well neither will the two games they took away from joe but they still did it.Selective punishments. It should be everyone gets punished or nobody gets punished.Shit last year and all the years past this hit(joe) would have been a great hit and on highlight reels! But this year its a bad hit??Bettman needs to get it straight .
Thornton is almost a half a foot taller than perron. Perron was hunched over at the waist. That was a 100% legal hit by Thornton, the only problem is that it was a little (as in less than a second) late.
How can a hit be considered to the blind side when the guy skates into it? It just rewards players for playing with blinders on. In this case, Perron took a horrible pass that forced him to turn his head back towards his own net. If Thornton had just been standing there, Perron would've skated into him and the result would've been identical. Perron's teammates put him in a horrible spot, and unfortunately Perron had to pay for it.
It disgusts me that these hits are now illegal. Blind side hit. So what. These guys are millionaires. It's too bad that Eric Lindros can't play hockey anymore. Guess he'll just have to settle for enjoying his millions of dollars. Oh and the Stevens hit on Lindros would be considered clean. It wasn't a blindside. They might as well just take hitting completely out of hockey. Players would still get concussions, though.
One thing that needs to be addressed here, is that Perron was out on the very next shift. which means at very least he embellished the injury.
I disagree with the suspension but I agree with the call on the ice. There was no intent to injure and Thornton/Perron were victims of a weird circumstance, including a suicide pass.
wahta dick, he lifts his shoulder right into his head. Head was targeted. These announcers are shitheads. Most of them are. Simple, he was vunerable, moron placed shoulder pad into head, idiot complains, leaugue plays dumb and only gives this shithead a couple games. Perron, fucking career may be over.
@NHLArchive It was also a bad idea for the d-man to pass it to Perron like that. Thats like a suicide pass. You dont pass it up to someone who is in a vulnerable position to get hit. Also, why didnt the goalie let his team know the penalty was over?
@NHLArchive Thornton waited in the penalty box to line up perron. He did it on purpose. Hes a pussy and a piece of shit. The Blue are gutless for not spearing that asshole in the neck when they played him later in the year.
@link1567 The big retard joe charged at him. what do you mean what was he suppose to do??? and then he put his shoulder into his face you fucking retard.
@MrCocoaKrispies he charged at him? What fucking video are you watching.. and yes, Perron put his face into joes shoulder, Joe braced himself for the hit, was he supposed to just dance out of the way?
@stlrockets11 dude why do you have to use bad English and get all mad? Like can people not have opinions, is yours the only shortsighted opinion that matters? You're the definition of a retarded internet troll
@link1567 wow... youre a fucking idiot if you think perron ran into thornton. watch the replay again.... perron has his eyes on the puck from his own defensive faceoff circle... joe leaves the penalty box, lowers the shoulder and drives it into 57's head... if you know ANYTHING about blues sharks you'd know the sharks are a bunch of goons..always have been... always will be. thornton has complete control over what he is doing and he just wanted to put a malicious hit on...
@BJustus31 the sharks are goons? Are you serious? Our toughest player Murray will lay anyone out when they try to hit him, pure clean hockey. Sharks only recent goon Jody Shelley is gone. A real goon team was the ducks of the last few years, with real dirty players like Perry taking cheap shots wherever possible, and guys like Parros who have no reason to be on the ice besides to hurt someone.
@romansmk Randy Hahn (multiple Emmy Award winner,) and Drew Remenda are the best in the business. Maybe you've heard of the NHL 2K series of video games? They do the commentating. Hardly shitheads... Ass.
@romansmk Randy Hahn (multiple Emmy Award winner,) and Drew Remenda are the best in the business. Maybe you've heard of the NHL 2K series of video games? They do the commentating. Hardly shitheads... Ass.
@romansmk Dude these announcers have won Emmys. And plus they're the only few announcers who actually have personalities and are even regarded as part of the team. And Perron ran right into Jumbo. So you're the stupid shithead.
@romansmk question. How to you raise your shoulder? Im pretty sure thornton just went for a big hit and his shoulder height just happens to be Perron's head height
my thoughts exactly. perron just got smoked and had his head up his ass, it happens to the best of us. shouldnt of been a suspension or ejection since thornton didnt even explode up ward, he literally just skated past perron and perron learned that running into JT with your head turned around in the neutral zone is retarded.'
its not a blindside hit when the person getting hit isnt paying attention lol
that hit reminds me of the hit from peca on domi some years ago. peca came out of the penalty box and leveled domi. he got back up immediately though.
@jeffabs no, but i still think it was a perfectly fine hit, perron's dumb fault for returning to the game and faking people think he was faking it at the time
Don't act like Thornton was just standing there. That's a checking stance Thornton is in. He was trying to hit him. Period. The end.
North/south hit? They meet at a 90-degree angle. Thornton is toeing the red line while Perron is skating towards the offensive zone. I don't think Thornton is a dirty player, but this was a dicey hit. Perron should have protected himself a little better, but Thornton could have pulled up and still made the play.
@sjrr5545 Don't act like Thornton was just standing there. That's a checking stance Thornton is in. He was trying to hit him. Period. The end.
Yeah, this is hockey. Perron had the puck and wasn't looking forward in the neutral zone. YOU ALWAYS KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND EYES FORWARD. Because of shit like this. Clean hit.
perron was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. against a taller man. all thornton did was basically come out of the box, and let perron skate into him. the fact that he's taller is what really hurt perron, because thornton's shoulder hit the shorter and slightly bent over perron in the head. there is nothing thornton could have done other than just get out of perrons way and let him skate by un-impeded, but i don't think that's what hockey players are taught from the time they are peewees
Well if Gary Bettman took his head out of his rear, he would notice that there were way less "questionable" hits before the lockout. The "you-can't-graze-a-player-with-your-stick-or-you-get-a-penalty" rule has introduced enormous hits from awkward angles. And since introducing the blindside rule, it seems these hits happen even more often, because the kids think they can give suicide passes and skate with their heads down. I miss the old days where hits weren't scrutinized every 2 seconds.
WHERE THE FUCK IS DAVID PERRON?! HE'S BEING A REAL PUSSY. AFTER THIS HIT HE GOT BACK OUT AND SCORED A GOAL, AND WE HAVEN'T SEEN HIM SINCE NOVEMBER.
PLUS WE HAVE NO UPDATE ON A RETURN, IF TJ OSHIE COMES BACK BEFORE HIM (WHO BTW BROKE HIS FUCKING LEG IN NOV.) I WILL LOSE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR PERRON. SUCK IT UP AND PLAY, THERE IS NO WAY YOUR HEAD STILL HURTS.
Thornton rolls away from the hit. Perron had his head looking back for the puck, Thornton jumped on the ice, when they collided you can clearly see that Thornton Rolled away from it. It was a Crap Call and I know Jamie Baker Agrees with that
the reason he got suspended is because he aimed for Perron's head, which is illegal (for good reason). It's funny how commentators on TV said Perron embellished the hit, because he is still out from this and probably won't return this season. Thornton should have received a much longer suspension in fact. If Thornton had hit Perron shoulder-to-shoulder and it resulted in the same injury, I would agree that the hit was clean.
The reason this was illegal because, under the new rules, Thornton came at him laterally but I think this is garbage. This should bee a clean hit and people should still have to keep their HEADS UP!!
@TheOILERSfan99 You can't keep your head up while receiving a puck jack ass, maybe while controlling it, but not while receiving. The point is Perron is looking in the opposite direction and thorton charged out of the penalty box and hit him viciously in the head. If you think he imbelished the hit you're retarded because his concussion is so bad not only is he still not playing, but he hasn't even tried skating yet. He deserved more than a 2 game suspension.
@underground09 he sure as hell did not aim for the head. thornton is 3 inches tall, so his shoulder lines up with his head already. the suspension was retarted because one it was a legal hit, and two perron should be blaming his teammate for passing it to him while thronton was just getting out of the box. poor communication, poor pass decision
@underground09 did I say he embellished it? perron got SMOKED but it was a little in the gray area for a blindside hit. BTW because of Matt Cooke only getting 2 games for a way worse hit than this joe deserves nothing more than 2 games blues fan. ever heard of a suicide pass?
@IrelandSpud08 I'm not denying Perron is suffering concussion like symptoms, but injuries result from clean hits in hockey all the time, not to mention every other full contact sport. There was no intent to injure by Joe Thornton whatsoever. Also: Though trying to take a tone of condescension while arguing from a position of ignorance is trollish and never a strong debate tactic, you did kinda make me chuckle. Thanks for the laugh, bro.
@nd2drum he wasn't showing him any disrespect, hitting is part of the game, it wasn't a headhunt, he hit perron from his shin to his knees, just a solid fair hit
@nd2drum that is not the new rule you fucking dumb fuck, read the rule before saying stupidity, i have had it with people who have no idea what the new rule is
Not a dirty hit, but technically against this years rules. I don't think the suspension was necessarily called for, but I could see a fine being levied. Anyone who thinks this is a dirty hit is likely either a St. Louis fan or a San Jose hater.
@pointgiver1 so, a hit to the head shouldn't be suspended but pushing from behind should. I'm commenting on the ovechkin suspension last year on his "hit" on campbell. Both campbell and perron were both injured from the play, perron is still not able to pass a baseline test because he's yet to go 48 hours with concussion like symptoms but hey, apparently you know "hockey". I am all for hitting in hockey, but there's a difference between a clean and dirty hit, you clearly don't know that
Clean hit. Keep your head up dumbass.

@TheRenegadeSniper scott stevens also never left his feet or raised his elbow, he jsut hit guys so hard that they had to be concussed, stevens is one of the greatest players of all time and had he been suspended much we woudl have missed out on it
NHLArchive 5 months ago
@NHLArchive Concussions are bad for hockey, you're an idiot if you think that ruining players' lives and careers is beneficial for the game. This was a clear target of the head, it wasn't a "result" of a big hit. This was a cheap frustration decision because at this game (i was there) the sharks were getting massacred. The blues had all the possession, and were off to the best start in franchise history. This hit derailed the entire season. Thornton should have missed 20 games.
ElliotAsbed 3 months ago
@NHLArchive What is so great about a player who hits to injure... to end careers. Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Sydney Crosby, Brett Hull... These are the kind of player who truly are some of the greatest players of all time.
CaptNDaigne 2 months ago
@NHLArchive This is ridiculous. Hits aren't made to injure, they are supposed to be an intent to hurt and intimidate by the same occasion. NOT injure.
CaptNDaigne 2 months ago
@NHLArchive I understand that hockey is a violent game and that injuries will happen, but this is a dirty hit all the way
elms91 2 months ago
@elms91 it isn't dirty, you can say that hitting shouldn't be a part of the game because it can cause injury, but you cannot call this hit dirty, it was totally fair and perron could have easily avoided it.
NHLArchive 2 months ago
@NHLArchive well I wouldn't say hitting should be eliminated altogether, it's an integral part of the game. I don't see how Perron could have "easily" avoided it; but understanding how youtube works, we both know that we won't be able to settle this so I'm just going to leave it at that
elms91 2 months ago
@elms91 he had his head down staring at the puck, it is plain and simple, don't look down there. His teammates could have warned him, given him a better pass. Seriously you are not seeing this. Really? It was still a clean hit, Thornton did nothing to purposely try to concuss Perron.
NHLArchive 2 months ago
@NHLArchive Ok if you want to keep this going....Thornton clearly lowered his shoulder at Perron's head. If his intentions were purely clean we both know he would've protested getting tossed; he was totally compliant with it because he knew that he deserved it
elms91 2 months ago
@elms91 that is your supporting evidence? lol. No player intentionally goes out there to concuss a guy. Was he trying to crush him? Yeah, but he did it in a clean manner. Yes there was head contact but Joe is a big man and all of the replays show that he hit him all over, not just in the head. He could have done some even more major damage if he was actually trying to hurt perron, such as throwing an elbow, charging him, ect...
NHLArchive 2 months ago
@NHLArchive I would say that taking a guy out for a whole season and then some is pretty major damage. I can see by your other comments that you're a hit-lover, and you'll always support the hard hitters of the game. While hockey is a rough sport and accidents happen, this was a dirty hit. He was pissed that he had already gotten a penalty and he clearly took it out on the first guy he could. Thornton is fast becoming one of the dirtier players in the league, watch some other vids
elms91 2 months ago
@elms91 Clean hits can cause injury, even incidental ones. How long Perron was injured has nothing to do with how dirty it was. There is no penalty for taking your anger out on someone. Thornton can be dirty but he didn't do anything devious here. That is just a standard bodycheck. Sure the injury was unfortunate but the only way to prevent injury in the NHL is to ban hitting and require more padding and rethink the material of the boards and even the playing surface.
NHLArchive 2 months ago
@elms91 and i normally do not support thornton, in fact on of the few players I really dislike, and I like perron, but in this situation it was a clean collision. Do you ever see me defending Matt Cooke's hit on Savard or Doughty's repeated crosschecks that he has been giving out, or kaleta headbutting someone? No.
NHLArchive 2 months ago
@elms91 I'm really not seeing your argument, here, that this was a dirty hit. Thornton could've easily made it even bigger hit than he did by skating towards Perron (thus increasing the relative velocity). 100% of the force of the hit came from Perron. He was looking backwards for the pass that everyone in the game is told not to make from the time that they're 6. Thornton played it very gently. He didn't aim for the head, didn't leave the ice, and didn't blow him up with an elbow or a stick.
MasterofOssus 2 months ago
@teddydaniels
Joe Thornton is 6'4" and David Perron is around 5'10. Joe Thornton is not a dirty player. He has no history of this and he wouldn't start during a November game against the irrelevant St. Louis Blues.
cacophonyize 3 months ago
@teddydaniels Wrong. As Jumbo has said, and you can see in several of the angles, he was trying to get his shoulder out of the way, so that he wouldn't come into direct contact. Check the video at :40.

You never see any of that in classic games.
GorterPoss 6 months ago
@GorterPoss yes you did, watch marty lapointe, he had some classic blindsides, steve webb, even forsberg killed niewendyk on a blindside. This hit is nothing compared to some of those classics.

59BostonBruins59 7 months ago
@59BostonBruins59
How are you supposed to catch the puck without looking at it? Or even see where the puck is coming from without turning your head?
Either way, the hit seems kind of senseless... Thornton could have just taken the puck from him instead of obliterating him.
ledzppn69 7 months ago
I like how radio broadcasters and many spectators claimed that Perron could have faked it because he scored a goal afterwords when David is still having symptoms of the concussion today. So ridiculous
tom1515 7 months ago
being out for possibly 2 seasons for a hit like this is unheard of. I have seen way bigger hits in the league than this and guys missed a few months and came back, this guy just needs to either suck it up and realize this isn't soccer or retire and go play sissy soccer with the nilly lions in europe, suck it up already and this is coming from a blues fan.....
Goblues1980 8 months ago
Perron took a bad pass at his skates, which is why he had his head down. He didn't see Thornton because when he checked the ice 2 seconds before, Thonrton wasn't there. Thornton came in from the side and would have made a clean hit, but his shoulder made initial contact with Perron's head. That is a penalty and suspension according to the league's new rule since the hit came from a lateral position. This really was a textbook call.

poutine9927 11 months ago

It should be everyone gets punished or nobody gets punished.Shit last year and all the years past this hit(joe) would have been a great hit and on highlight reels! rawdog268 11 months ago
Thornton is almost a half a foot taller than perron. Perron was hunched over at the waist. That was a 100% legal hit by Thornton, the only problem is that it was a little (as in less than a second) late.

ledeux 1 year ago
How can a hit be considered to the blind side when the guy skates into it? It just rewards players for playing with blinders on. In this case, Perron took a horrible pass that forced him to turn his head back towards his own net. If Thornton had just been standing there, Perron would've skated into him and the result would've been identical. Perron's teammates put him in a horrible spot, and unfortunately Perron had to pay for it.

There was no intent to injure and Thornton/Perron were victims of a weird circumstance, including a suicide pass.

perron was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. against a taller man. all thornton did was basically come out of the box, and let perron skate into him. the fact that he's taller is what really hurt perron, because thornton's shoulder hit the shorter and slightly bent over perron in the head. there is nothing thornton could have done other than just get out of perrons way and let him skate by un-impeded, but i don't think that's what hockey players are taught from the time they are peewees
iamdlerch 1 year ago
Well if Gary Bettman took his head out of his rear, he would notice that there were way less "questionable" hits before the lockout. The "you-can't-graze-a-player-with-your-stick-or-you-get-a-penalty" rule has introduced enormous hits from awkward angles. And since introducing the blindside rule, it seems these hits happen even more often, because the kids think they can give suicide passes and skate with their heads down. I miss the old days where hits weren't scrutinized every 2 seconds.

i would trade the 2 game suspension for perron's return. Im still waiting!
Beradical23 1 year ago
the reason he got suspended is because he aimed for Perron's head, which is illegal (for good reason). It's funny how commentators on TV said Perron embellished the hit, because he is still out from this and probably won't return this season. Thornton should have received a much longer suspension in fact. If Thornton had hit Perron shoulder-to-shoulder and it resulted in the same injury, I would agree that the hit was clean.
jag528cbr 1 year ago
The reason this was illegal because, under the new rules, Thornton came at him laterally but I think this is garbage. This should bee a clean hit and people should still have to keep their HEADS UP!!
TheOILERSfan99 1 year ago
@TheOILERSfan99 You can't keep your head up while receiving a puck jack ass, maybe while controlling it, but not while receiving. The point is Perron is looking in the opposite direction and thorton charged out of the penalty box and hit him viciously in the head. If you think he imbelished the hit you're retarded because his concussion is so bad not only is he still not playing, but he hasn't even tried skating yet. He deserved more than a 2 game suspension.
underground09 1 year ago
@underground09 he sure as hell did not aim for the head. thornton is 3 inches tall, so his shoulder lines up with his head already. the suspension was retarted because one it was a legal hit, and two perron should be blaming his teammate for passing it to him while thronton was just getting out of the box. poor communication, poor pass decision
Luckyhearts 1 year ago

From a Blues fan, CLEAN HIT. The biggest problem is the height difference. What would have been a shoulder to shoulder became a "head shot."
BUT, I was disappointed that a lot of media assumed Perron faked an injury... 2-3weeks later... i guess he is still faking....

I am all for hitting in hockey, but there's a difference between a clean and dirty hit, you clearly don't know that

easiest way to solve this? make all hits to the head illegal

@superstaralen are you kidding? that would take honest hits out of the game, go back to soccer
