  • I just purchased a Model 22, Model of 1917 .45 ACP revolver today, and the moon clips are completely unnecessary. I put the rounds in, fire the gun, open the cylinder, point the gun vertical and all the spent cases fall out.

  • Wow! Where did you find that beauty?

  • HEY HICKOK45 HAVE YOU EVER CHECKED OUT BOB MUNDEN??????

  • the USA is the place to be thats why i am geting a green card hello from england i come from plymouth where the puritans came from and i live a short while where they set off to amercia

  • @MrGta12367 welcome to america.

  • There is no sound that is amazing as the moving cylinder

  • The 22 the good looking, but the 25 is beautiful

  • u seen that bullet cementary on the floor?!?!?! O.o

  • do u have a 1917? they are my favorite :)

  • 50 CAL FTW

  • really not a fan of the heat treatment pattern

  • My Great Grandfather brought one of these home from the World War 1, a S&W model, batch 2 with a 4xx serial number. Sadly, it is no longer in shooting condition, so it is just a family heirloom now.

  • @hickock45 Can you shoot .45 auto rim in an automatic (say, a Colt M1911)? Thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • hickock45, you SOLD your 625? How could you?! :) That is a beautiful Model 22, though. Turnbull does amazing work.

Regarding loading full moon clips, I recently discovered a product that looks like it both loads and unloads them pretty handily. (I don't think I can post links but Google "moon clip tool") Don't have one yet but it would go nicely with my 625.

  • i hVW question, why build a different gun if you dont have enough of one gun? wouldnt it be easier to make more of the same gun?

  • looks like the metal got anodized

  • I love the videos. espicaly the longer ones! Keep up the interesting info and entertaining shooting!

  • And yet another Hickok45 video teaching me something I never knew... Best channel on YouTube.

  • If a person reloads, can't they cut down on the long colt casings and modify them?

  • @flabeachcomber , Well, that's pretty much what the .45 Auto Rim cartridge is, I guess. It would be a great deal easier to just buy some of the Auto Rim cases.

  • @hickok45 See, that tells you what I know about reloading. I didn't know they still made the Auto Rim cases. I know. "Go to the rear of the class-again." :)

  • @hickok45 .45AR cases have a slightly thicker rim than the .45 Colt cases to fill up the space that would normally be taken up by the moonclip and the rim. Unless the gun has a longer firing pin, or the casing headspaces on the case mouth (rather than the rim), ignition would probably be unreliable.

  • @hickok45 Hickok between the .38 Spec and the .45 ACP/ Auto rim which one would you choose?

  • @hickok45 No, not exactly. The rim thickness is a little different. The .45 auto rim has a thicker rim to make up for the lack of the moon clip. The .45 LC will not sit far enough back and the firing pin will not make contact with the primer.

  • i love your channel i am also a revolver-aholic and i soon wish to start my revolver collection and maybe you could suggest some of the best revolvers i prefer the .357

  • lol hickok, your backyard is pretty full...but i love ur target toys xD

  • A true gun channel!

  • Hickok, for the classic series, does Smith & Wesson mount the firing pin on the hammer like on the originals, or do they still use the modern firing system with the transfer bar and firing pin in the frame?

  • hickok45 you are great. respect from germany!!!

  • Do you have a P38 or P5?

  • Do you ever watch the footage to help see where your hitting with a particular gun? Seems like it could help with the far stuff seeing as most of the time you can even see the bullet in flight, i suppose you could just shoot more....

  • You need to show a Colt M1917.

  • im new to revolvers whats a key lock?

  • Hickok, Please tell me Ruger is going to send you out the new "Single Ten"!!!!!!!

  • Excellent commentary

  • What is the point of a half moon clip? It would take at least twice as long to reload the weapon. The only thing I can think of is to possibly save rounds during tactical reloads (only reload the half that is spent.) Seems like a minor thing for the most part.

  • @Makingnewnamesisdumb, It's all that existed for decades, I suppose. Someone then figured out how to make a full moon clip.

  • @hickok45 the theory is half moons fit better in a pocket

  • @hickok45 the theory is half moons fit better in a pocket. When are we gonna see hickok45 on Top Shot?

  • @Makingnewnamesisdumb Halfmoon clips fit better in the pocket and are less likely to bend. Hickok45 when are we gonna see you on Top Shot?

  • Comment removed

  • @Makingnewnamesisdumb / half moon clips are not as esally bent as the full ones/ and while there not as fast they ar still faster than no clip, while retaining the combat type reliability./ allso they are much simpler to handle as well as carry in bulk.// wich in affect actually makes them faster and more realiable.// in addition to that, when ammo is limited , the half moon gives you the option of mixing the long colt with the acp.,

  • Comment removed

  • @Makingnewnamesisdumb Probably because the full-moon clips tend to bend and choke the gun?

  • @killchain187 Would a half moon clip be less likely to bend? Maybe.

  • @Makingnewnamesisdumb That's kind of what I was getting at. Forgot to activate the sarcasm tag.

  • @killchain187 There was no sarcasm involved, you made a claim and I was questioning the validity of the claim.

  • @Makingnewnamesisdumb well, considering I own a similar revolver and I prefer the half moon clips because when they bend they tend not to make the clip unusable, I guess that's the validity of my claim.

  • @Makingnewnamesisdumb I think it`s because full moon clips were too bulky to carry around.

half-moons don`t bulge in your pocket, ammo pouch, vest etc...Nor do you have to worry about them bending as much.

  • all the gong shots are cool when the cam is zoomed in we can actually see the bullet flying

  • hickok were did you get those speed reloaders? What are they called? keep up the good work.

  • That is very pretty

  • Super nice, I've always wanted to have a .45ACP revolver but haven't gotten around to it yet.

  • thats a pretty nice gun

  • what year did the pilgrims go to america?

  • @Ellis01234567890 1620, the pilgrims landed in Plymouth. They were going towards Jamestown but ran out of beer.

  • @mark3smle thanks for answering.... i thought it was more along the lines of thr 1400's... i had no idea america was so young

  • @Ellis01234567890 no problem. but it is 1400s when it comes to permenant settlement. 1492 for columbus expedition. of course the Vikings were in Canada for a while earlier in area around the 900-1300s i believe.

  • @mark3smle yeh i get you... i live in the UK so we never hear much about american history.... plenty of other countries history but never america... wiered

  • Having not heard of Jerry Miculek, I did some research and holy smokes! Anyway, Hickok you mentioned having older ammo there, whats the general rule on how long ammo is good for? Considering it's kept clean/dry.

  • @141bpm forever if well looked after

  • @141bpm, I've shot surplus ammo from WWII (possibly WWI) that shot just fine.

  • @hickok45 i have herd of people shooting stuff from the 1800's and black powder rounds from 1800's as well.

as long as its kept well and is not corroded i think it will last for a long time.

  • @141bpm i've read that as long is ammo is kept dry i will last forever.

  • @141bpm i have herd of people shooting stuff from the 1800's and black powder rounds from 1800's as well.

as long as its kept well and is not corroded i think it will last for a long time.

  • you need a show on the military channel, you could teach our marines something.

  • @wevor4tard Don't knock the Marines. However, I know a reservist who did not know the M249 SAW shot 5.56nato and could accept m16 magazines in desperate situations. But again, that was a reservist, and a female.

  • @12gaugebleachdrinker

Want to tell me how to make a belt fed use a Stanag magazine?

  • on the opposite end....the desert eagle 44 shoots rimmed cartridges:)

  • Hickok45, I've been watching and enjoying your videos for over 8 months now. I found many interesting things in your reviews. Lately you post more revolver videos and I started to become interested in them. There is one thing you mention a lot is the different frames. I'm sure that I could go and google the differences and meaning of the L-frame, K-frame, N-frame designations, but it would be much more entertaining if you could make a video explaining the differences.

    Thanks!

    Peter

  • @vdub4utube I think he might've displayed the differences in one of his previous videos-just go on his channel and peruse them...I believe you might find what you're looking for.

  • @vdub4utube, We did something on that over a week ago -just haven't posted it yet. I must have been reading your mind.

  • @hickok45 Cool! ;-)

  • @hickok45 hay hickok matt again and i got my hands on a yugoslavian sks 7.62 power love the gun but was wondering do you know if i can get and A.C.O.G. scope? not sher if you know about this gun but figured you could help and also whats the best ammo for it i have wolf and it came with a boc of 300 military rounds I THINK.

    thanks hickok matt.

  • I absolutely love history, especially military history; what's outstanding about you and your videos is that you combine that with guns (my obsession), good high quality weapons. With that you definitely set yourself apart. Once again, thanks hickok45

  • nice demonstration of a rather unusual type of revolver, as always you never cease to intrigue me hickok45, keep up the good work :)

  • Great vid.

  • Wake up S&W drop the key lock!

  • Nice video, I use the full moon clips in my 625 and my Webly. I have some auto rim that I used at a time, but the moon clips were a lot quicker in IDPA. Its a fun design, but like you said, if they are bent a little just toss them, you will never get them straight!!

  • Those are some fine individuals at Academy of Self Protection! If I were in your area, I would buy everything I could from them. Thumbs up if you agree.

  • Go Peay!

  • It looked like at one point you were closing your right eye. Are you cross dominant?

  • Hm, why would you want a revolver in .45 ACP when you can have a 1911 with a higher capacity?

  • @panicatthediscosuck

Maybe just for recreational shooting, or as a collector's item (after all, it is a classic).

  • @panicatthediscosuck I've got both, a 625 and a 1911A1. The 625 never jams, and will group tighter at 50 yards than the 1911 will at 25yds. The N-frame S&W, with action just a bit tuned, is soooo smooth, slick and precise to shoot that it a pure pleasure to fire! Revolvers are a LOT less trouble and aggravation for CCW than auto pistols.

The pure intimidation of large 45 ACP hollow points in a massive cylinder pointed at a bad guy cannot be beaten! He KNOWS you ain't bluffin'!

  • 6:02 that's what HE said. =P

    Great video as usual.

  • Hickok, you're a good man for posting all these vids.

I gotta say that I see absolutely no reason to have a revolver in .45 ACP. It just doesn't make sense. The revolver is poorly suited to shoot rimless pistol cartridges.

  • i think the coloring looks strange, and i hate snub noses.that was just my opinion.

  • Does that beauty able to fire long colt too?

  • Do you ever try to clean up all those spent casings or just leave em?

  • @OAXM202 he would be swimming in a forest of brass if he didn't!

  • You should have Jerry Miculek come to the range and put on a reloading demo. He is the best in the business at it.

  • Watch it at 2:25 he nearly hit the exact same spot, then says he doesn't know where to hold. =) I think you're fibbing, hickok. lol

  • i hate you hickok :] im so jealous you say life is great its because you dont live in a middle east shithole . keep up the great videos !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The Dillon Blue Press issues:) This months has a nice cover, that 1911 on the cover right? Thats what I tell my girl:)

  • UMMMMM GUN PORN!

  • I think you can also shoot .45 auto rim too.

    Greetings from Holland

  • ★★★★★

That is an awesome looking Revolver. You can't beat Smith & Wesson Revolvers!

  • Greg, someone else may have linked to this, but the BMT (de)mooner tool is the best way of loading/unloading moonclips. You guys have to check this out. These things are like a VCR back in 1970! :-)

    Just google BMT Mooner tool!

  • This is a great video. I finally learned the details involved with loading and unloading moonclips.

I've admired these guns (45acp revolvers) but can see that they "disturb" the simple fun of revolver shooting. Seems like competition only gear to me.

  • I know this is an off topic question but I was just wondering what happened to soldiers if they were caught transporting their guns back to their home country in WW2?

I hear some were threatened with their life...?

  • Thanks I always wondered about moon clips.....

  • Love the dillon girls...

  • hickok u really know how to get to the core of me

  • "some of them are tighter than others and some of them go in pretty easily" lol

  • I thought that tool was a Glock barrel.

  • Do these have hammer mounted firing pins like the originals or is it frame mounted like the modern ones? I don't know about you but for some reason I really like a hammer mounted firing pin on a revolver. It just would't seem like a true reproduction without it.

  • Nice little pistol there, thanks bud!

  • Looks like Indiana Jones handgun in Raiders of the Lost Ark

  • Very cool! I've never seen a .45ACP revolver! Thanks for sharing!

  • keep pressing 1 hickok45 is doing the disco revolver

  • man what a beautiful revolver! i want that exact piece, but right now, S&W only makes it with a slightly longer barrel, and with a lanyard loop type ring on the bottom of the grip

  • one of the few instances where the use of the word "clip" is actually correct

  • could they use the same concept and make a 9mm revolver?

  • @gerberboy0100 Smith and Wesson made a small frame revolver (model 940) back in the 1990s that shot 9mm. I believe Taurus still makes one (model 905).

  • @gerberboy0100 they have made 9mm revolvers in the past, and yes, they used full moon clips. if you're really interested in one, look around - you can probably find a nice used Ruger SP101 in 9mm

  • how old are you ?

  • Lmao at 14:53 Hickok looks like hes saying "what good?"

  • Comment removed

  • AND it's easier to pick up your brass :)

  • look carefully at 15:26 and you can see the bullet!!!

  • That is my favorite classic revolver..and those are,my favorite brand of cigars.

  • I love revolvers because they look good and also because it is lot more comfortable to load revolver then to fight with those magazines and get your fingers all sore and stuff .... hovewer defense sitation is a different scenario - i'd rather have 18 then 6.

  • An educational video urgently needed, what it a key lock, what its its function, etc about key locks.

  • i used to have a smith and wesson 625, awesome, big N frame revolver , no recoil as they gun was so heavy, loved it...

  • do a review on a S&W 519, I just got one.

  • Come on John, tell him when hes shooting high and he thinks its low. It won't ruin the video.

  • A friend of mine once had a 9mm para smith & wesson revolver in the same colours as this one. I have no idea what model that was, cant find it anywhere.

  • what is the purpose of the key lock ?

  • @lukehi The same as the purpose of labels on a baby carriage that say do not fold with baby inside.... Its just lawyers bs.

  • does a revolver have more power then a pistol with an equivalent cartridge?

  • @MrStrontipis No, the only thing that would make a difference is a longer barrel which would give you more velocity. It's the cartridge that's important. There are revolvers that are chambered for more powerful cartridges like the .500 S&W Mag (which has been in Hickok's recent videos) that semi-auto pistols aren't chambered in.

  • @Dorkopolis yes but the revolver loses no power in chambering a new round, isn't that a factor?

  • @MrStrontipis

depends on the length of the barrell. But if the barrels are the same size the revolver will be propably little less powerful due to the little gap between cylinder and barrel (some gases escape through that gap and there is less presure). But it is nothing that much important. The cartridge and shot placement is what matters.

  • beautiful gun!

  • I've got one of these I bought a few years ago. It's not case-hardened. Kicks like a mule and shoots high. I don't use the stock grips. Corbon is or was making Auto-Rim loadings. I've got some DPX in AR.

  • Love all of your vids . . too me? when shooting a ACP. 45 round IT Has to be shot from a Model 1911 Gov model.

Shooting the round through a revolver just doesnt quite seem right . . Smith and Wesson guns are way too expensive for my budjet. I had a Smith Model 19 in .357 magnum. sure wish I had not sold that gun because if I still had it, I could get a couple grand for it now . I paid $350.00 for it back in the late 70ds. Thanks for the vid Lovd it. 73 JKW in Modesto CA.

  • This video actually confirmed my next revolver purchase for me. I want to get the Smith 610, the revolver chambered for .40/10mm. It looks like the automatic cartridge version of a .357, very cool, and moon clips everywhere.

  • The Gong strikes back. It did not want to be hit. Beautiful gun as well!!!

  • I noticed that unlike many guns you shoot, this one shows a bit more muzzle flip than we usually see when you shoot the same cartridge out of an automatic. I would imagine the slender old-style grips tend to make it "slip" upward in addition to the fairly short and relatively lightweight barrel. Add to that the slow-moving slugs being affected by the gun's upward movement... yep, shooting high sounds very believable. Beautiful gun, though. If only those safety locks would mysteriously vanish...

  • very beautiful gun, except for the damn key lock :(

  • @daviescrt28 This is his own private property. Check out his Range Tour videos to see more of his setup.

  • I wish i could see a Taurus PT 845 :(

  • Surely a big distributer could order some up without the keylock?

  • @kalliste23 I do not think S&W will ever make another revolver without that stupid lock. The lawers are all over it. Someone needs to explain to them that they are less safe with such a lock.

  • @kalliste23 No. Smith won't manufacture a revolver without a key lock anymore.

  • I love all of your revolver videos.

  • So hickok this model 22 is made to pretty much only use it with clips? I

  • @daviescrt28 its own propery

it is just behind his house

  • Awesome video, awesome gun

You shoild do a video on a hi point c9

  • The webley fosbery revolver would have been a lot more successful if they had used a .45 acp.

  • 16:28 caughtcha flinchin' =)

  • Cant believe it took me this long to comment on it, but you have one the nicest, clearest cameras out there Hicock. I guess it was that cast hardened frame that made me comment.Truly stunning. Thanks for that .Always appreciate the camera work John.

  • funny how this vid was more about speed loaders

  • Every gun you touch I want ! Great review as always .....

  • Ahh, it was really bugging me lately that I couldn't understand how moon clips looked like/work haha.

  • hey hickock do you have any elephant guns?

  • I don't know if it was your intent, but this seemed to be an "education" right out of the gate and not so much striving for pounding hundred of rounds accurately downrange. Which is OK, BTW! However, I don't recall anyone ever commenting how much your CAMERA PERSON learns firsthand by simply filming these episodes. John already knows more than most of us regarding firearms; his work behind the camera only enhances the knowledge base.

  • @tnoutdoors9, Yep, this gun is different enough that I'm sure a lot of viewers are not familiar with how the .45 ACP revolvers work (moon clips, etc.). The beauty of the gun and the unusual feeding system was the focus.

  • +1 on the flinch due to the 500S&W Mag vids you've posted lately!

    Hickock45 you are the best!

  • You guys should try filming with a tripod. John can still pick it up and move around, but your gong zoom shots can be more stable if on a tripod on the ground. Keep up the great work! Love every video.

  • @SeraphimHD, We do both and have come up with the ideal combination, apparently. :-)

  • @SeraphimHD I think a monopod would be more appropriate.

  • @SeraphimHD It would'nt be the same

  • @SeraphimHD It wouldn't be the same

  • I have stellar clips for my judge to fire rimless .45 ammo

  • Hickok, you are too good to us.

  • très bonne vidéo! quel caméra utilise tu ? merci

  • yea a "five most cherished guns vid" would be awesome!!

  • lol your allowed to miss, we understand regardless of excuses

  • Is this your backyard or something?
