Do you remember the movie 1492 that came out about 17 years ago? I just found this misleading piece of propaganda inserted into the movie from a NYTimes book review.."You treat Indians as the equals of Europeans," says one disgusted colleague. "What do you want?"

Checking wiki I see that CA has delisted Columbus day as a holiday, and Venezuela has renamed it "Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance)"

But I've also read that the Arawaks were a very peaceful people of the Caribbean, and the Carib Indians were like the Spaniards, violent. The Caribs wiped out the Arawaks. "Barbecue" is the only Carib word used today. They BBQed the Arawaks and ate them.
Maybe Columbus and the Spanish were God's payback to the Caribs. The Caribs and the Arawaks are both extinct.
