Great Video, I got a lot my info on Worms, and Vermicomposting over at HomesteadearthDOTcom, Chris did a great write up on Vermicomposting. Then Googled my fingers off. (that's how i go here)
my worms keep crawling out. They have food, its not to hot or cold, its not 2 wet or dry, they have 2 totally fresh beds with shredding brown paper, manure, oak leafs, and coffee grounds. What is wrong with my worms?
They might not be liking the oak leaves. Is the manure well composted and where is it from? If if is from stabled animals where the urine got mixed in with the manure they will not like that either.
Thanks for the instructions. It really was a good idea to take the bin outside before stirring things up! I believe my error was over feeding. I just took off the layer of vegetable scrapes on top and put that stuff in my compost, and then put the newspaper on top. It makes perfect sense to me to "disturb the gnats" - goodness knows they're disturbing me!!!! Thanks, I'll let you know how it turns out.
The best thing I know of is to try and distrupt the environment for the gnats. I take the bin outside and turn the bedding to disturb the gnats. Keep the bedding turned pretty regularly, daily if necessary. Put a fresh layer of shredded newspaper on top of the bedding. Remove it when you turn the bin and then replace. It will take a little time but it should work to destroy your gnat population. Many advocate not turning a worm bin. I say, it's an absolute must for the health of the bin.
Great videos - thank you for sharing your experiences with us. I have a "Worm Factory" type worm bin in the garage. I live in Sacramento, CA and it's getting hot. My plan has been to move the bin into the spare "junk room" that is air conditioned - but the day before I was going to move them I have a black gnat investation. This killed a previous batch of worms and I don't want to bring the gnats into the house. What is your suggestion?
2. Where did you find the vents and what are they called?
3. Did you put the wiremesh on the inside or out? What size wire mesh? I'm having a hard time fathoming how that would stick via hot glue, but I like the concept!
How many worms do you put in a bin that size?

Is the composted steer manure store bought? They won't like that...it's been sterilized and has no bacterial life.

Perfect.
1. Which exact brand is that bin?
2. Where did you find the vents and what are they called?

thank you
