@anglermatt Bluegills and pumpkinseeds have bones in the dorsal (top) fin when attacked the fish flails the dorsal fin and will gets itself stuck in the mouth of the predator. In some cases the fish will fin the angler while on shore. This is exactly what happened here and the damage was done before you got on scene...sad but part of nature.
