  • This is utter nonsense. Scopes only pretended to have taught evolution. The trial wasa publicity stunt sponsored by local businessmen.

  • There's a school of thought that the whole trial was set up by local civic boosters to draw visiters and fame to Dayton. Scopes actually was a substitute teacher of science who initially couldn't recall teaching evolution- but he was persuaded to play along because defense counsel wanted to test the law. One thing IS certain: it wasn't "Inherit the Wind".Bryan's son and Scopes actually went swimming together, Darrow spoke publically at local churches, and John Scopes was never held in jail.
