I saw them yesterday in Paradiso Amsterdam; brilliant concert. The energy is still the same as 21 years ago. Terry's lack of enthusiasm in 'Blank Expression' is clearly an act. Though he never moved a lot. And he still doesn't. I heard he's depressed and on prozac. It's a pity that a fully sold out concert hall with bouncing and jumping people, who really like you, can't get you over your depression.
Carlisle market hall, May 80, Specials + the Selecter on the same bill for a fiver, thought I was the bollox in my electric blue suit with the red silk lining........
They are warming up at the mo for a re-union ................ sod the beatles or abba getting back ...this band will generate some serious ticket sales!
Terry Hall was only 18 years when he joined the Specials while the other members were in their early 20's. Any changes he had physically may show more. He did not pile on a few pounds, but merely matured into an adult's body.
I'm not a regular bassist, but I'm a guitarist and do some tone things for my own bassist. I'm reckoning that in this case, because he's using what appears to be a 50's P-bass(tele-style) which happen to be quite mid-sy, probably, his EQ settings are quite scooped, because that's how it sounds. I know that he uses super clean bass tones, totally dry, no drives whatsoever. Usually I think he goes with a 60's jass bass. Naturally bottom-heavy tones there...
This is a truly great concert. A friend of mine has the whole gig on a VHS casette, and especially "Enjoy yourself" the closing number is just breathtaking. It's lika half of the crowd is up on stage then, and Jerry Dammers (the keyboard player) actually climbes on top of his keybord while still playing it. Insane show! It'd be nice to see that part here.
Monkeyman. One of my favourites of all time.Couldn`t believe when I see it posted on here.Brought back some fabalous memories.I`d love to see all back together for one big stadium re-union.
This must have been one of their best concerts ever. Jazz festival in Montreux 1980. Showed it on Swedish TV some years ago and I have it on VHS and it is absolutely brilliant. It has everything, great performance, great crowd and I don't know how many times I've been showing it to my not so enthusiastic friends before going out. Their best moment in my eyes!
