Hey I have a question. I use sony vegas to edit aswell, and I am going to start editing videos. I have a canon eos t2i , but when I put the files in sony vegas, the preview is too laggy for me to really even edit..So i was wondering, what type of computer you have? and what do you suggest for editing on sony vegas. Also, how do you go about converting the files to AVI or another editing friendly filetype.
ive always been confused about letter boxing...whats the purpose of this?
I really hate it when I rent blu ray's and the top and bottom of my screen are gone...i mean thats why I bought the fancy 55in...only for the movie people to take half of it away w letter boxing!
Hey Luke, nice work. Just want to clarify - after importing the .mov file do you render it to the new format and then re-import it for editing? That part of the workflow is not so clear to me as after talking about that you move straight on to the colour correction. Also after shooting flat with the sharpness turned down how do you restore it? Thanks,
hi. i jst got a new EOS 550d. Now i want to edit the videos in my final cut pro. What should be the my settings in the final cut pro that i can get the best output?I am shooting at 1080 and 25fps. Thank you.
can somebody please please tell me how he got magic bullet mojo into sony vegas i thought it wouldnt work in sony vegas...i have sony vegas movie studio will magic bullet mojo work with that one
If I render a 1:30 minutes video with the setting shown in the video an with 30mb/s, resolution of 1280x720 an 60fps it takes 360 Megabytes! Thats way too much vor uploading on YouTube, it would take me ages to upload...
How about explaining how to get the cinematic look without spending another $99 for Magic Bullet?? Some of us have Vegas 10 and MB isn't compatible with that.
@Dod3032 When did you download and install it in Vegas 10? Are you using Pro or Movie Studio? I know it works in Movie Studio, but it didn't work in Pro when I tried it about a week ago.
@Dod3032 Okay, I just did some further reading on it. Although I spoke to a Magic Bullet representative on the phone and they indicated that MB does not work with Sony Vegas Pro 10, it appears it works on 32bit systems. Mine is a 64bit system and it won't run on that.
@psychedelnick1 No, it won't. I already tried it. I spoke to the tech for the company and they said they have no plans to make it compatible for Vegas 10, because it didn't seem to have a big demand for it by Vegas users.
Quik Question...I'm using Sony vegas...and you mentioned re-encoding the .MOV file to a more edit friendly format..like Mpeg2. Do I use or do it with the same method that you rendered the file in the end of this video? I noticed that the files you imported were in .Mov format. I don't want to risk of the quality by converting...
What would you need to do if you, do all this and then you need to inport to after effects? What s the best way to export from after effects?? I feel like i lose a lot of quality when i upload to youtube
I use sony vegas 10 but like with the camera i got something that i am going to have to learn to use, what is the reason for shooting flat is that just a trick to allow you better color correcting options? and what is the reason for not going higer with the frames per second? you tube is supposedly able to handle up to 60fps now just curious but i Love the quality of your videos still either way
Just wanted to say thanks a ton for everything you are doing here. Just got a T2i for Christmas and I've learned so much from your excellent videos. Bravo.
Basically, I just want to edit my files without any loss of quality and then upload to youtube. I'm not using any grading or effects. Is there a way to be able to save the edited file without any change to the codecs being used?
How come when I render in Mpeg2 the software saves the video and audio in separate files? Also, is there a way to render the video in Mpeg 2 and save the audio in uncompressed format?
I rendered it the way you showed me but when I try to upload it to Youtube it says it takes about 119 mins to upload a 2 min video. Should it take this long? Help?
@Cheeseparing I don't know exactly how to translate that to Sony Vegas though...with the way I do it now I'm actually trying to mimic 2.35 as closely as I can, but it's hard to get it exact.
@Dod3032 Ah! It's just a little sum: you have your width and height in the Event/Pan/Crop on the left. In this case, your width is 1,920. So you simply divide 1,920 by 2.35 (because the ratio is to 1), and change you height to whatever the answer is; 817 px. It should change the little croppy box thing and of course you can save the ratio to use it again! Don't be mislead by this though, if you're dealing with 16:9 where the denominator isn't one, you'd have to divide by 16 then multiply by 9.
@Dod3032 never heard of that one haha, i've only really heard of 4:3, 1.85:1 (16:9), 2.35:1 and 2.40, the sort of, 'popular' ones. Some free movie channels use ridiculous letterbox, making it thinner than it already was, like over 9000:1. I think it's so you dont get 'all of the movie' if you illegaly tape it. Beh...
Hey DoD ,Thank you for your videos! So you color grade and render all your footage to mpeg2 prior to editing ?& How Do the formats compare in size H.264MOV vs Mpeg2 HQ ?
I have watches thousands upon thousands of videos on YouTube, and this tutorial here is the best that I've seen, by far. Really great job. You are now one of my favorite subscriptions (out of about 1,500) And that's saying a lot.
After doing so it will downgrade your video checking it back and forward between the original mov file and the mpg file. Vegas is a good program but dont work well with mov files after i check premiere cs5. Premiere works great with mov file, its works like as a mpg file in vegas, without the conversion.
Thank you so much for this!! Awesome help, I've been trying to find the best render settings for a while, you're the only tutorial I've found that explained WHY you click each thing you click when you render, now I understand bit-rates and shit like that!
This is going to seem like a silly question, but it's been bothering me! I can't seem to record on the T2i unless it's on its movie setting, in which I can't change the f/stop and shutter speed, etc. When I press the record button on Program or Manual, it just changes the display from the view finder to the screen. Help?
Does transcoding it from h.264 to mpeg-2 cause generation loss? Aren't they both lossy codecs? Do you render it back to h.264 and does that cause loss in quality?

Brilliant, well explained and very helpful ! Thanks alot !
I hope you plan to keep these tutorials focused on the Ti2 (or cameras that have similar video settings, like the 7D): to have in mind that both you and I use the same camera helps alot.
I have one question there : which software do you use for screen recording ? Is it good ? (Seems a bit laggy to me)
@DrJedd I use CamStudio. It's fine, I don't put a TON of time into Editing that part, I just kind of threw in the essentials. The lag would probably be from how slow my laptop actually is.
I find your workflow a bit limitng because you grade your shoots, render them and then edit. If you want to make any changes to to colors after you locked your edit this kinda sucks. I do a proxy workflow and it works fine.
@MetropolisParkour Yeah, but what's the difference if you take your time to color right off the bat? I have never had a problem with it but I can see how some might...I never said my workflow is the best, it's just what makes sense for me.
You might want to try using Premiere Pro CS5, with a decent computer you can avoid all rendering and tweak your color correction throughout the editing process.
It will also save you the hassle of rendering from After Effects, instead you can dynamically link your AE comp to your Premiere Pro project, allowing you to skip the proxy rendering step and make changes super fast and easy
premiere cs5 allows for editing pretty smoothly!!! I just got CS5 and its super smooth. It saves you a ton of time. However I miss my fcp interface. Way more user friendly than premiere.
Man, once again, very nice work. I am sure a lot of people appreciate your tutorials. I converted my files to mpeg2 like you suggested and it makes editing so much quicker and easier. Thanks for the tip. Quick question...when I go to export my finished footage it takes a ridiculous amount of time. An example: 35 seconds of color corrected footage (Premiere Pro CS5) can take up to 15-17 minutes to export. Is my computer just not able to handle it or am I doing something wrong?? Any ideas?
Another great tutorial..Thanks!!! If you don't have new blue fx I recommend you check me out..They have some great effects for films, they're easy to use, and u can do a lot of the color correcting with the same effects as magic bullet and best of all, it doesnt slow down rendering times..I have magic bullet but really havent used it cause I can never get the look I want..But Im def gonna try these settings..again great tutorial, looking forward to the next one
And if yu want much more good quality to ur footage , Render with avid DNxHD Codec in Mpeg Streamclip :) but File sizes ll be Huge like ur 50mb files ll be 250-300 Mb ;) ......
Thank you so much dude :) ....It helps me alot :) .... but one Thing , i too dont re-encode n with Quick time 7.6 pro you dont need to re-encode , .mov 550D files smoothly runs in sony vegas pro 9 :) ....
@spencerduhbarrett That's what I hear! Yeah, Vegas is NOT the best way to go for DSLR footage. This tut was more for people who are stuck with it for now :)
so we are supposed to import the video to vegas, then render it, then import again, then render again? because im wondering if this would stop the lag i get when editing,
lets say if im filming a phone conversation and i film the two people talking separately how do i make the clips intersect so it looks like theyre actually talking on the phone?
@DylanW216 Vegas isn't great for this but it can be done. Have one clip in one video track and then create a new track and place your second clip above it. Move the top clip along the X axis to slide it over. Play around with that a bit and you can get it to look pretty good.

@MetropolisParkour Yeah, but what's the difference if you take your time to color right off the bat? I have never had a problem with it but I can see how some might...I never said my workflow is the best, it's just what makes sense for me.

@Dod3032

Love the tutorials. THanks.

great work!!! the gain and gamma definitely can change the vibe of the shot.

premiere cs5 allows for editing pretty smoothly!!! I just got CS5 and its super smooth. It saves you a ton of time. However I miss my fcp interface. Way more user friendly than premiere.

Where do you get your scores from?
myrage156 1 year ago
@myrage156 I just throw in some of my own songs at the beginning of these...they are old, but Royalty Free :)

@Dod3032 What about for the zombie trailer?

Man, once again, very nice work. I am sure a lot of people appreciate your tutorials. I converted my files to mpeg2 like you suggested and it makes editing so much quicker and easier. Thanks for the tip. Quick question...when I go to export my finished footage it takes a ridiculous amount of time. An example: 35 seconds of color corrected footage (Premiere Pro CS5) can take up to 15-17 minutes to export. Is my computer just not able to handle it or am I doing something wrong?? Any ideas?
zume2600 1 year ago
@zume2600 If you are using magic bullet that may be why
myrage156 1 year ago
Another great tutorial..Thanks!!! If you don't have new blue fx I recommend you check me out..They have some great effects for films, they're easy to use, and u can do a lot of the color correcting with the same effects as magic bullet and best of all, it doesnt slow down rendering times..I have magic bullet but really havent used it cause I can never get the look I want..But Im def gonna try these settings..again great tutorial, looking forward to the next one

Thank you so much dude :) ....It helps me alot :) .... but one Thing , i too dont re-encode n with Quick time 7.6 pro you dont need to re-encode , .mov 550D files smoothly runs in sony vegas pro 9 :) ....
sye005 1 year ago
thanks!
Londonsmostwantedtv 1 year ago
I dont re-encode, I use Sony Vegas pro 9 with quicktime 7.5.5 or lower. Vegas wont edit if later versions of quicktime are installed.

Is this the 32 bit Sony Vegas? Cause Magic Bullets doesnt work with 64 bit versions.

@furiousracer313 32 Bit
Dod3032 1 year ago
in premiere pro cs5 it edits .mov native dslr footage sooo smoothely and my computer sucks
spencerduhbarrett 1 year ago
@spencerduhbarrett That's what I hear! Yeah, Vegas is NOT the best way to go for DSLR footage. This tut was more for people who are stuck with it for now :)
Dod3032 1 year ago
so we are supposed to import the video to vegas, then render it, then import again, then render again? because im wondering if this would stop the lag i get when editing,
TyMcFly91 1 year ago
@TyMcFly91 Yeah. So, Import, Color Correct, Render. Then those clips are Colored and ready to edit and they will be much faster as .MPEG-2.
Dod3032 1 year ago
lets say if im filming a phone conversation and i film the two people talking separately how do i make the clips intersect so it looks like theyre actually talking on the phone?
DylanW216 1 year ago
@DylanW216 Vegas isn't great for this but it can be done. Have one clip in one video track and then create a new track and place your second clip above it. Move the top clip along the X axis to slide it over. Play around with that a bit and you can get it to look pretty good.
Dod3032 1 year ago
@DylanW216 Exact same concept as in this tutorial with the Letterboxing pan, you will just be moving it sideways.
Dod3032 1 year ago
@Dod3032 okay thanks you guys are the best
DylanW216 1 year ago
Awesome! I'm not using Vegas either, but I know that it's a very good tool.
Keep'em coming!

do you ever render as .wmv, or is mpeg-2 better quality?
danglingairfreshners 1 year ago
@danglingairfreshners .wmv is probably fine as long as you stick to the other settings like Bitrate and Frame Size.
Dod3032 1 year ago
@Dod3032 ok, thanks!
