Yeah. I go to starbuk in early monring for work. I alway say thank you with sign. Ofc im deaf. But Im not go starbuck often just about 2 weeks. And worker gave free I order lol! And worker know some spell because worker's wife work inerpreter. I think some starbuck worker are nice and friendly!
Yes. this is good idea! My husband & I lead Deaf Chat at Starbucks in Chattanooga. Our group has met on the 3rd Saturday of each month for 2 years and not once has any employee signed anything...and we have about 60 people who come every month. wow. we buy a lot of coffee...a thank you would be nice.
A nice thought, but doubt it will be successful. I have been trying to teach employees where I work ASL for me, and all they do is gesture. But truth is, no one is interested. Until a large crowd of deafies walk in! Ha bet they wish they would have taken time to learn!
So true. I work at Sports Authority at Customer Service, and when I notice children speaking for their Deaf parents and I start signing and let them know I can sign, they get so happy to be able to converse in a way that is natural without going through a third person. I wish everyone knew a little bit of sign.
Aww.. that's so moving video and yes I exactly know how you feel because I always feel good when someone tries to sign especially "thank you".
This is why I always, I mean.. I do always sign "Thank You" everywhere, every time. That way they learn it and hopefully they use it next time to other deaf person.
No Starbucks, though since I don't go there, ha ha. Hope that will encourage everyone to sign "Thank you" for sure.
Awesome! :D At my two starbuck places I go to .. they know me well and does few sign language. they even know what I want so yep.. that's how much I visit them lol
Let that employee know that it made your day.- write a letter :)
Chelsa, I start realized that you have been improved your sign skill (don't mean to be criticized at all) but really applauding at your "improved" sign skills ever since last two or three blogs. :-) Keep your work up! :-)
Heh, I worked at a Barista for a few years when I first started College. My whole family is deaf and I'm HH. We have a decent sized Deaf community in this area and peoplw would be so surprised coming in to order drinks or food and as they're pulling out a notepad I'm signing asking what they would like. The expression is always priceless. I wish more people would take the time to learn basic sign langauge. Every city has an Independent Living Center, they will teach you for free.
I agree that a letter to Starbucks may just help. I believe there are many Starbucks workers in our area that know ASL, but we have a pretty large Deaf community here and the Deaf club meets at Starbucks regularly. Have a great week!

I have deaf customers occasionally and they all come to me to help them...plus all of my hearing colleagues want to know what i say to them :)
Maybe my employer will do it too.
