C'mon, look at painters. They aren't branded as bad artists because of the different styles they show throughout their career; they go through "periods". While some styles are more "commercial" it doesn't mean they are bad. I love Sigur Ros and one of my fave songs is "Señorita" by Justin Timberlake.

People hating on the "new" sound have been bugging me a lot. How can you say this is going "mainstream" when it is really nothing more than the same natural evolution they've presented on EVERY album.
They aren't selling out, they're maturing. They've been doing it this whole time. They've just got more people watching them do it now.
Music is always a matter of opinion. You can analyze it a million ways but you can never have a right or wrong answer stating that a band is good or bad. If the song has meaning or is empty, it is all opinion based. i will continue to be a huge T&S fan till the day I die, I have their lyrics tattooed on my heart (literally). But IN MY OPINION, this single TO ME is not the Tegan and Sara I know and love. It's a catchy little jingle to me. I still have high hopes for the rest of the album.
I guess mainstream wouldn't exactly be the word, commercial sounds better. I have been a Tegan and Sara fan since Under Feet Like Ours, living in Calgary I saw the raw making of these girls. To the person who made the comment about them being indie and they need to make money, what happened to being true to who you are and you to your music. I hope that is not lost in these two.
They are miles away from being the type of music you're referring to.. They definitely haven't compromised artistic integrity for the sake of mass appeal. They've gotten more popular as they've made more albums.. I remember when they had 3 million views on myspace before The Con... now thats up to 20 million because MTV took notice. More fans doesn't equal selling out, they're getting more popular because more people are realising how talented they are, pure and simple.
Theres nothing quite like waiting for itunes to download the first Tegan and Sara song in years. Its like getting home after a long trip. ahhh... home again.
Even if they do become "mainstream" they're still going to be Tegan and Sara, wearing their hearts on their sleeves, bantering for long periods of time during shows. Mainstream just means that they'll be a bit more noticed, which is great for them.

What exactly do you mean by "mainstream" and who ever said that was a bad thing? It's something I've always battled with... music is meant to be something you can identify with and/or make you feel good/happy/get you excited about something... if it appeals to more people then that's a good thing isn't it? More people get enjoyment from their music. I still think their most poppy/catchy album was So Jealous... I think if anything their music is becoming less mainstream.. but to each their own.
Out of all the people I've seen and heard say that Sainthood is mainstream, your comment bothered me the most. What is mainstream? And why do you think T&S are mainstream? To say that Sainthood is different from The Con is a blatent "Duh!" but ALL of their albums are so different from eachother. I would argue that if their new songs don't speak to you then maybe you grew out of them.

I feel sad for you but not because I'm trying to defend T&S, but because I feel like you're setting yourself up for failure. People hating on the "new" sound have been bugging me a lot. How can you say this is going "mainstream" when it is really nothing more than the same natural evolution they've presented on EVERY album.
They aren't selling out, they're maturing. They've been doing it this whole time. They've just got more people watching them do it now.

Music is always a matter of opinion. You can analyze it a million ways but you can never have a right or wrong answer stating that a band is good or bad. If the song has meaning or is empty, it is all opinion based. i will continue to be a huge T&S fan till the day I die, I have their lyrics tattooed on my heart (literally). But IN MY OPINION, this single TO ME is not the Tegan and Sara I know and love. It's a catchy little jingle to me. I still have high hopes for the rest of the album.

I guess mainstream wouldn't exactly be the word, commercial sounds better. I have been a Tegan and Sara fan since Under Feet Like Ours, living in Calgary I saw the raw making of these girls. To the person who made the comment about them being indie and they need to make money, what happened to being true to who you are and you to your music. I hope that is not lost in these two.

They are miles away from being the type of music you're referring to.. They definitely haven't compromised artistic integrity for the sake of mass appeal. They've gotten more popular as they've made more albums.. I remember when they had 3 million views on myspace before The Con... now thats up to 20 million because MTV took notice. More fans doesn't equal selling out, they're getting more popular because more people are realising how talented they are, pure and simple.

Even if they do become "mainstream" they're still going to be Tegan and Sara, wearing their hearts on their sleeves, bantering for long periods of time during shows. Mainstream just means that they'll be a bit more noticed, which is great for them.

I don't think it sounds all that mainstream... check out some of the other new songs from Sainthood that Wojo4hitz has posted. Don't worry, Tegan and Sara are still real.

What exactly do you mean by "mainstream" and who ever said that was a bad thing? It's something I've always battled with... music is meant to be something you can identify with and/or make you feel good/happy/get you excited about something... if it appeals to more people then that's a good thing isn't it? More people get enjoyment from their music. I still think their most poppy/catchy album was So Jealous... I think if anything their music is becoming less mainstream.. but to each their own.

Out of all the people I've seen and heard say that Sainthood is mainstream, your comment bothered me the most. What is mainstream? And why do you think T&S are mainstream? To say that Sainthood is different from The Con is a blatent "Duh!" but ALL of their albums are so different from eachother. I would argue that if their new songs don't speak to you then maybe you grew out of them.

Also about all this mainstream business; it's a horrible fad, and awfully ironic to be a mainstream hater. I feel sad for you but not because I'm trying to defend T&S, but because I feel like you're setting yourself up for failure. You're judging a whole album off of a few songs, or maybe even just this one. I feel bad because you are putting a mental block on something you once enjoyed and claim with almost no evidence that you will no longer look forwards to their new music.

It's unfortunate that you would claim to have such a connection with their music and lose interest only because this album is "mainstream." I really hope you can get over this and continue to enjoy things because they're enjoyable, not just because it's not "trendy."

Hey I'm not here to start a fight. I'm only trying to bring something to your attention, and in the end it's all about personal perception. That's why I tried to specifically say that you should enjoy things that you like, and not try and avoid it because it's trendy.
If you don't like the new sound because you genuinely don't like it, then that's fine. But if you're avoiding their music because it's too "mainstream" then I think that's wrong. It is opinion, I'm just trying to provoke thought.

I really like this song... I want to say I love it, but... love's a strong of a word.
But in all seriousness, I like this song. I knew Tegan had it in her. It really hits home for me because it has this alt. rock sound and that's not the only genre I listen to, but my favourite.
I think that she keeps progessing, she's gonna really own that rock sound.
They've got to be the best songwriters I've heard. I'm suprised more people aren't covering them.

"Hell" is the first single! :) They gonna start playing the song at the radio october 2nd in montreal and will be on I Tunes october 6th! :) Can't wait to hear the original version! :D
