@SeamanEllis I wish that I had been a "keeper of that light" in this building.I would cherish that responsiblity. You are a part of American history and should be very very proud. The history behind this structure is nothing short of amazing.I wish I could have been out their 6 miles off the cost of the Nation in the middle of nowhere standing strong with a light and hearing the waves and seals bark.I would cherish it.
Maybe the eygptions built it just like Mt.Rushmoore and the statue of liberty was built by them as well.Ha ha ha.Give me a break.White men built this.Like it or not that is a FACT.
I get chills when I think about this magnificent display of defiance....This light house is my fav.I hope people can understand at last how hard it is to do things like create things like this light house.
This lighthouse is not only the most dangerous lighthouse in america, but to me it hold a lot of power over you. I can't really explain why this is, but everytime I think about it or talk about it I have these powerful flashes of being drawn back to it and facing the same dangers I felt when I lived on the rock. Thats what we called it. "The Rock". In the year I lived on the lighthouse I watched 4 people lose it all together, and I replaced a guy who threatened to jump out the 4th floor window.
I was assigned to this very lighthouse in August 1971 to August 1972. I was the boom operator when I lived on Saint George Reef Lighthouse. On the day I was scheduled to leave the lighthouse for the last time. I was forced to violate a direct order in order to save 3 peoples lives. The rescue was witnessed by over 40 shipmates assigned to the USCG Cutter Comanche. Some going away present. I just thank god I was a survivor.
