In order to get the amt of iodine you actually need for health, you need to eat way more iodized salt than is healthy. But, go any nursing home & a lot of restaurants & ask if they use iodized salt, Many don't.
Eat 2 pieces of bacon or a pickle & you're getting your sodium intake for the day, but, nowhere on that pkg does it say you got your iodine for the day.
Also, you can take iodine, but, if you don't have trace minerals, your thyroid hormones won't be activated.
@medini2 so it is possible to take too much iodine, but, it is impossible to get anyway near enough in the standard american diet of today unless you want to kill yourself w/ sodium chloride.
this man is so effing ignorant, it makes people stupid just to listen to him. these jackasses want to add statins to the water supply now, and double your flouride intake (to prevent tooth decay). unfathomable idiocy!
Is this guy ever out of step with the work of many other health professionals incuding Dr. David Brownstein who say the RDA is totally inadequate. I think the good doctor in this video needs to brush up on his research. The Japanese consume 100 times the RDA.

I suppose I should clarify... Note the previous posts as well. Some of the time Iodine is used in large doses to suppress t3 and t4 and some of the doses recommended over the counter are quite high. Depends on the disorder and dose given. The flippant advice was given not knowing if mutinodular goiter was present or other pathology. Great discussion...
I so agree with you! SO many medical folk are either totally clueless (having never spent more than 1 day of lectures on nutrition during their years of studies, or are in their lucrative profession for the MONEY! There is no such thing as a 'PATIENT' ~ only CLIENTS~ PERIOD! The longer they can maintain their clients the better, & those that resort to antibiotics frequently & for almost any 'health issue' whatsoever, are in my opinion criminals, because antibiotics cause NUMEROUS health issues!
@Drew82 You are right, the average Japanese person consumes almost 100% our RDA (150mcg) and have a way, way lower incidence of breast cancer and other cancers. They consume 13-14mg/day!
I agree with world changes, and the pathology seen inland (away from the oceans in non-iodized salt countries). It is not well know outside of the medical community that Iodine is used to SUPPRESS thyroid function prior to surgery and in some disorders. Of course a daily amount is necessary. However, it is absolutely used to depress thyroid function in some disorders. Iodine in pharmacologic doses inhibits the release of T3 and T4 - a little known but important fact. Thank you for the reply!

I say BS. You need way more then 120 mcg of iodine. A little salt gives you all of the salt you need? Do your research.

And, we'd have to eat 26 tbsp/day of iodized salt to get that. No way!

excellent!
I am tired of hearing the lady at the health food store tell everyone with a thyroid disorder to take her iodine supplement.
It is contraindicated in some disease processes.
