No. The adult cat is a male, and isn't responding to the kitten because cats do not have "families" that include the father. If it were the mother cat, she would have attacked whoever was holding her kitten.

I think your tabby has some Egyptian Mau. As for handling the kittens too often and the mother rejecting not so. A first time mother cat could reject that kitten knowing something is wrong with it, or just doesn't know how . I have been around cats all my life, and its encouragement given to the mother, but if you move the kittens too much, she will find a more quiet spot to put them in. THAT you don't want to happen, you would be amazed where mom cats try to hide the kids.

@LEGOswimmer You also have to keep in mind you could make the kitten sick if you are sick. Thus the mother rejecting the kitten. SO keep those "paws" of yours clean. :) Also the kitten can be born with Leukemia if the mother has it, and the immune system of the kitten is not strong. Thus rejection of the kitten. Again encouraging the mother that everything is okay, and she trusts you is a good way to start, but hovering and consistant touching of the kitten is not highly advised.

@starcatcher3333 i hadcats and kittens my whole life,i can assure u that u can touch the kittens since the first day,actually its very important do touch them as soo as possible to make them as tame as possible.if u dont touch them for the first 7 weeks they wont probably be particularly friendly with humans

I haven't been around cats near as much. But one time I took in a nice feral cat who had her kittens in the winter. After I picked them up to put them inside of the house, the mother /did/ reject them. I think that had a lot to do with her being feral. I was lucky in that case though. I got a dry towel and rubbed her down with it, and then rubbed down the kittens blending their scents. After a few hours she came back and let them nurse again. Whew!

@LaChatteGrise We've had lots and lots of kittens over the years, and with each one we've always picked up the kittens to look them over and check for fleas and other problems, and also to get them used to humans very early. If at first you pick it up for about a minute in full view of the mother cat, put it back and walk away for a while before doing it again, the mother becomes used to it and realises you're not going to hurt the kittens. Eventually you can carry it around in a pocket.

When our mama cat hears kittens crying, any kittens, she does her damndest to find them.

Little kittens often will mew and sometimes make a chirping noise when they are unsure of their surroundings, and they want their mother (mamma) cat. Our cat Peaches, has 4 baby manx kittens, and if she hears them crying for her, she comes running in fast to see why they are crying.

If she hears kittens on TV, she starts pacing around the room, and looks for the kitten that she hears on TV (or computer).

When she calls her kittens, it's either a loud mewing (cry) or a trilling noise (urrrk).
