  • @munozdr Thank you.

  • This very interesting and I was very excited seeing it. My name is Crystal Whiteside. I am from Fredericksburg,VA and Im taking enigeering at my local community college. This is why I wanted to major in enigeering. After community college Im looking forward to going to Viriginia Tech though. I wish they something like this there. Thank you.

  • @thatgirlnamedcrystal

Hi Crystal, Thanks for the comment. I know there are people interested at the U. of Virginia and there were several comments from Virginia Tech a couple of years ago. I am guessing that you will find students involved in similar activities at both of those schools now. Good luck in your studies!

  • i fell in love with the idea of becoming a humanitarian engineer! i'm studying at a pre-engineering academy as a high school student and hope to attend CSM. I'm impressed by the amount of girls enrolled being so that i'm one of the 2 girls in my class of 20!

  • @20Rebecca02 Hi Rebecca, thanks for the note and your interest in humanitarian engineering. I should say that I retired from as a full-time faculty member in December. The best way to contact me is through email. You can get my email address through the CSM website (inside Mines) and then go to Engineering and then Mechanical Engineering. I am listed as faculty there. Let me know if you have questions and I will try to let you know when the school has decided on my replacement. Cheers! D.Munoz

  • @munozdr will do! thank you!!

  • My name is Nathan Garza and I am a senior in High School in San Antonio, Tx. I am really interested in Civil/Geological Engineering and have been looking at a lot of schools, but this program is the main reason why CSM is at the top of my list. I will surely be involved in this program and hope to take a lot out of it. Thanks for sharing this video.

  • I hope you will join the minor program and work with us in the coursework and projects. Thanks for the words. Do you mind if I use them to help keep our program strong?

  • No please go ahead. That would be amazing.

Thanks again for posting the vid.

  • Hi my name is Keegan I'm a senior in high school and am really passionate about humanitarianism and helping those less fortunate. This video really provided me with some insight as to what ill be involved in and it was extremely insightful interms of how I can make a difference. Just wondering how i should go about getting into this kind of course? Thanks for any feedback

  • Hello my name is Mike and I am a Mechanical Engineer enrolled at Virginia Tech. I am taking a class on engineering cultures and our current topic deals with how engineering affects a humanitarian aspect of our culture. The video was enlightening on how engineering education is applied to a real world application and how students not only learn in a direct way but also give back to a community at the same time. What criteria do you use to select which countries/villages need the most support?

  • Common attributes of the projects are: good contact with the people (stakeholders) directly benefiting from our efforts (this could be through working w/locally based NGOs, we must meet a basic human need (to date: water source and waste water management, renewable energy or efficiency measures and education). Travel restrictions have led us to utilize & understand limits on remote sensing. Projects come based on word of mouth. We continue w/same villages where we have established relationships.

  • My name is Lisa Floyd. I am a Virginia Tech student in the Engineering Cultures Course, where we study engineering in different cultures throughout history. One topic discussed is the lack of females in engineering. One explanation for this is the feeling of many females that they want to help others. They do not think they will directly affect others if they choose engineering. I'm curious if you have a higher ratio of females in this department compared to other engineering disciplines?

  • Thank you for your question. First of all, we are not a department, only a minor program. Of the 40 students who have enrolled in the minor to date, 20 of them are female, so we are at 50%. The CSM campus, which is all engineering, science and economics, is about 23% female.

  • Hello, my name is Devin Hodges and I am a senior in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia tech. I am currently taking a class called Engineering cultures where we learn about the effects and advancement of engineering across various cultures through many different time periods. I was wondering what other methods of sustainable designs are being implemented by the students with regard to water collection and distribution? I think that this program is a step in the right direction for engineering.

  • Yes, in a project for a Catholic Parish in the Makondo, Uganda which serves a community of ~10000 people, our students have worked with the officials and HS students to design a rainwater catchment system. A local NGO called "Into your Hands" is working to recruit Rotary Clubs here in Colorado to cover the expenses for collection and water storage tank construction. I can send you a longer version of our video on DVD that goes into a little more detail on the beginning steps of that project.

  • Hi. My name is Hannah Baldwin and I am currently an Engineering Science and Mechanics major and Virginia Tech. I am currently enrolled in a class called Engineering Cultures where we explore engineers from different parts of the world and examine the similarities and differences. This video is amazing to see these students doing good with their gift of technology. I was wondering if any of their projects have been implemented so far and if so which ones? Thank you.

  • Yes, we have implemented many of these projects. Many are also still in progress. The Ecuadorians are using the small hydro and are developing improvements. 26 miles of plastic pipe have been laid, a well has been drilled and the people of Colinas de Suiza are building the water storage tank in the Honduras Project. We're still working on two projects in Uganda, just began another project in Kenya (the same tribe of Obama's father) and a new project in Madagascar (with EWB). Preparation is key.

  • Hi, I am Mahama Traore, senior in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech. I am currently taking a class called Engineering Cultures where we learn how different cultures, countries perceive and apply engineering in their context. I admire your Humanitarian Engineering program because students are helping people in need while getting real life engineering design experience. I would like to know if graduating students will be involved with organizations such as Engineers without Borders.

  • We are currently trying to assess what our graduates of teh program are doing. We should have results sometime in the next few months. Many have said that they will become involved with EWB or some similar service organization. Anecdotally, many are looking for work with NGOs to continue this type work and a few have gone into the Peace Corp.

  • Hi, my name is Caroline and I'm currently a student at Virginia Tech taking a course called "Engineering Cultures," where we have been learning about humanitarian engineering for the past few weeks (particularly with Russian engineer Peter Palchinsky in mind). What you all are doing is so amazing and such an important part of engineering that I feel isn't discussed enough in the general public. I was wondering, how do you choose your projects, and how are the projects funded?

  • Hi Caroline,

Thank you for your interest. Can you please email me at school as the answer will require more space than this venue will allow. See the credits on the video for my email address.

  • Thats really cool
