Hey everybody, wanted to jump in and reply to all of the comments that I have been getting on this video series.
To all of the people thanking me for getting them to be able to begin with Latex; YOU'RE WELCOME!!! That was the point. And I did this video as an assignment in a math course; I had never even USED Latex before, let alone PRONOUNCED it!
And to all of the commenters on my pronunciation of Latex: I hope it bugs the shit out of you and continues to! Haha =)
I found these videos helpful, but I have a request. Please honour how these things are actually called instead of doing some bizarre Americanization. There is no such thing as MikeTeks. It is MikTek. And the language is not LayTakes, it is LaTek. Listening to MikeTeks and LayTeks again and again and again was really strange. I hope you do not mind me pointing this out. I don't understand why things are pronounced like that in certain parts of US, but it is really weird.
Hi! I would like to do a different title with 3authors, the name of my university , the work title etc and lyx just let me do one of each parameter with the report document class. Do you know I can I do this?
I don't know why in the last version 2.0.0 the shortcuts aren't showned beside de menu commands :S, so I didn't know the inser numbered formula shortcut. But I saw in your video when you opened the insert menu :P thanks a lot!
Hi, I would like to make diferent Front Page, with 3 authors the name of my university, etc. But Lyx just let me do one of each parameters (just 1 Title, 1 Author and 1 date). How can I do this?
BTW do you know the shortcut to make a numbered formula? I can's find it in the shortcuts list...
@tensorbundle, Wikipedia was wrong, but has been corrected within the last week. The first syllable can be either "lay" or "leh", but the second is always "tek". That's because LaTeX is essentially an extension of "TeX", and TeX is pronounced "Tek". This is because the "X" is a Greek Chi (pronounces "ch") , not an english "x". That's also why it's written as "upper-case X". Go to the TUG homepage and LaTeX-project page for refs, youtube won't let me include links. :/
Why the x? its not an ancient English word that we need to honor, or it is a rule not pronounce X in the end of the word? I am not native English speaker.
Hi, just what I needed.... can u pls help me on how to get a 2 column print out on lyx and also pasting matlab plots on lyx... basically i'm writing a research paper for IEEE and i want to use lyx...
LateX and Texmaker are such cumbersome time wasting pieces of shit. Simple things like locking an image in text or putting an image on the title page are so fucking laborious. Use [h!]-still won't work. Thinks it knows where best to put everything for best layout but it looks like SHIT. I have wasted precious hours endlessly launching and checking the final pdf over and over again just working out niggling difficulties with the program. I have better things to do-fuck this nerdlinger shit!!!

Question: I have a mac and had already downloaded mactex, and then lyx. I didn't make sure the bin folder in the mactex install folder was selected. How should I go through and do this?
First of All i want to thank you for this video, because i have no idea about the latex and i learn more about its use in all these 5 videos.
yesterday when our professor told about to submit your project work and final thesis in the latex format i was a bit scared about this but i thanks to you once again of all your work and i learn the basic and will now further i will move on.
Try using TexmakerX. I have been using latex for several years through command prompt. For me best editor was vim. But recently I have started using it. Very nice.
I can recommend LaTeX to anybody who's writing a long text (thesis, book whatever). It may be a pain to set everything up and to learn the basics, but you will be rewarded with a rock-stable platform that won't let you down when you're doing those 5-minutes-to-deadline corrections.

Please, can you help me with this problem. I live in Serbia and I have to write in Lyx. I choose Documet-Settings-Book(AMS) and then I select some text, go to the theorem form, the program gives me Theorem 1. and some text. The problem is that I write in sebian language and I need "Teorema 1" instead of "Theorem 1". I hope you have understood me. Please help!
hey i have one doubt... i am working on my thesis... is there any format for writing the thesis report...
secondly i am a design student and want to insert images in the report... so how to insert the image and how to left align, right align center or insert many images in a row.. it wiil be great if you could help me. thanks.
I used LyX for the last Year and started using LaTeX last week. After a hard impact I discovered that LaTeX is so much powerful than LyX. I think that LyX is a very good approach to the TeX world, so I recommend everybody to start using LyX and then TeX as soon as possible.
when i was downloading lyx, i keep on getting messages telling me that i'm missing packages such as "aguplus", "apa", etc. and asks me if i want to download it from a random package repository. What is this error and what should i do?
Two days ago I submitted yet another MS Word & Mathtype paper to a peer-reviewed math journal. The editor requested a LaTeX version. So I clicked on the Convert Equations feature in MS Word-Mathtype. It produced 96 pages of stuff that I sent to the editor & a math friend The math friend sent me back the compiled version of all my TeX code. It looked hideous. Nothing like my original MS Word & MT file.
@duck24x: I appreciate you watching and commenting on my video here. I just did this video to give my classmates an alternative to MS Word, Mathtype, or Equation Editor. And my professors were requesting the Latex format for online homeworks twice a week.
As far as the "Word vs Latex" or "Mathtype vs Latex" argument, it only comes down to preference and necessity. I needed this format for my classes. And Linux users CAN'T use Word; so they MUST use Latex!
@capoman1 Linux users don't have to use LaTeX. There are other applications that can do similar things. There is Open Office, although I don't know if it can do mathematical formulae. If not, there definitely are other applications for it. There is no need to underestimate the Open Source community. Oh, and the 'x' in TeX and LaTeX is pronounced like a hard k. Similar to the 'ch' in 'tech'.
I've published math papers in peer-reviewed math journals using Mathtype & MS Word and a 275-page doctoral math dissertation. I never once used TeX, etc. when I entered math grad school in 1988. All our homeworks in math grad school were done on paper. No problems there.
@duck24x: The internet now allows students to submit logical math discussions from HOME, and the teacher can respond from home, even at 10 o'clock at night! Tex also has the advantage of being able to paste into online forums, and shareable with others; like a text file, no graphics required.
The second benefit of Tex (using a Tex editor), is that typing routine math expressions found in regular and logical math, can be done using keyboard shortcuts, and commands; never touch the mouse again!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have downloaded TeX or LaTeX or some variation thereof onto my home computer and then never got past the installation phase and had to delete it later, all because TeX and all these non-WYSIWYG typesetting programs are absolutely worthless trash. I have used MS Word & Design Science's Mathtype since 1997 and nothing else.
@duck24x: I don't know if I would call it all "trash" per se.
1. I have already highlighted the "non graphical" benefit of the Tex format; Word relies on saving actual .jpeg or .png files from within Word, resulting in some formatting error when changes font sizes after typing!
2. The speed of typing, rather than clicking around a "plugin" in Word.
Suggestion for your Tex conversion situation: Paste Mathtype's conversion into Lyx, and do some quick editing, you can control Lyx's output.
@duck24x Try writing anything other then a letter to your grandmother, and then you will find the true power in latex. It is nearly impossible to write a 200 page dissertation with Microsoft Word. Columns will mysteriously change, columns will start changing on you, paragraphs will move around...that is worthless trash.
@outfile I 100% agree with you about the idiocy & insanity of MS's mysterious formatting. Drove me crazy, too. I don't know how I got through my dissertation. But I did. I wrote my 275-page doctoral math dissertation for Rutgers (year 2000) entirely in MS Word and Design Science's Mathtype. At least it got the job done. With TeX (etc) I couldn't even get the job started.
@duck24x by the way, I do everything in tex, from a letter to the landlord, articles for journal and conference, PhD thesis, master thesis, everything. And it is much faster than MS Word...but it takes time to learn. Also to have a baby takes, time, energy, you need to educate..it take maybe 15 years of education. and so? what do we do?? we don't have baby because they cause problems???
@duck24x I think the thing with LaTeX is that it wasn't designed to be instant. This is a piece of software used and designed by people who actually enjoy working these things out (crazy people). I myself had to learn it for my CompSci degree, and although it was painful, it's now a huge benefit. I still use LyX, but I always have the source there to edit and view whenever I want. I get higher marks from using LaTeX because it's something my professors are used to as well. Patience works!
True, and I am a Ubuntu user myself, and love how easy it is to install packages compared to Windows, and I fell in love with Lyx in Ubuntu cause I was looking for something I could type my math papers in. And before this video tutorial, I had ONLY installed it on my Ubuntu system, so this was my first time with this overly complicated Lyx installation, but I chose Lyx because I knew how to use it, and it is free. Too bad most users will be using Windows, so I chose a Windows tutorial.
Most other Linux distributions have a similar command line tool, such as OpenSuSE which has zypper, Gentoo which has emerge, and Arch which has pacman. The BSD's have "packages and ports" and Mac OS X has fink (which is a port of APT) and MacPorts which is a port of BSD "ports". Windows is really missing out.
You probably haven't heard of update manager and computer janitor. Plus the Remove orphaned packages tool. Not to mention the synaptic package manager itself has a cleaning tool.
@capoman1 I also use Lyx in Ubuntu. It really does save a lot of time, but I always feel a little unsatisfied with some of the formatting choices it makes. What's your opinion on TexMaker?
@ambigera I don't know TexMaker I use Kile which is by far the best LaTeX tool I have used. I have used many (Texnicsenter,LeD, LyX WinEdit to mention only a few). And I use it dally.
LyX doesn't make any formating choices the choices are made by LaTeX and TeX. If you know LaTeX (and or TeX) you can insert commands into LyX docs using ERT (Evil read text - CTRL+L). LyX is a way to learn LaTeX but ultimately You will learn and using plane LaTeX and using LyX for help vai the view source option.
@yonatan1myers = Another thing I dislike about Lyx is that there is no way to open LaTeX files (except by copying the code into a box) at least that I know of. When I'm doing something I'm unsure of, I usually use TexMacs because like Lyx it is WYSIWYG but with the added feature that it can easily edit other Latex files.
I do not know TexMacs but It does look interesting. Anyway I stick to real LaTeX. Maybe when these tools (TexMacs / LyX and or others) mature I can move to them. I suspect that adding document classes and styles will always stay a problem until someone writes a real front-end to LaTeX and not so LaTeX **like** WYSIWYG / M / W editor with its own language which exports to latex.
Yeah, Lyx and Latex are not neccessarily replacements to MS Word. Instead Latex editors let you easily create papers that are correctly formatted for cocllege courses. It's not really great for making math worksheets or anything. If you have to do proofs in a math course and the professor requires typed work, MS equation editor, and MathType can be quite cumbersome and clunky, with symbols just being pictures. So Latex is more elegant for typing proofs.
There is no problem with graphics what you see in the LyX is only a pre-biew the real graphics are in the output DVI/SP/PDF document. You should learn how to control that. The best input is ingeneral eps fils and you should make sure they are in good quality. That is what the latex will use.
The Latex library is apparently not included with Lyx. There are other Latex library options out there, but I am not proficient with any of them, sorry. But MikTex and Lyx are free.

If you have to do proofs in a math course and the professor requires typed work, MS equation editor, and MathType can be quite cumbersome and clunky, with symbols just being pictures. So Latex is more elegant for typing proofs.

This depends on what kind graphics file you use. If you use vector graphic rather than raster graphic, you will have much better result.

There is no problem with graphics what you see in the LyX is only a pre-biew the real graphics are in the output DVI/SP/PDF document. You should learn how to control that. The best input is ingeneral eps fils and you should make sure they are in good quality. That is what the latex will use.

great tutorial, friend! Very helpful. One small piece of advice though: it's pronounced 'lateK' with a k sound.

Hi,
The tutorial is great. While I was installing Lyx it gives this message when it reaches the point to install aspel6
"Your internet connection seems to be not permitted or dropped out!". Could you please help me about this?

What the use of MikTex???

The Latex library is apparently not included with Lyx. There are other Latex library options out there, but I am not proficient with any of them, sorry. But MikTex and Lyx are free.

Hi. I am planning on watching your tutorials.
If you have easy accessible resources to LyX and LaTeX... Please for the love of whatever entity you feel precious to you... Lead me to them.
At my school I am considered a guru in Microsoft Word 2007... And I do lots of mathematics writing...
Thanks for your stuff!
