I don't really see a problem with such toilets, many regional trains in italy also have toilets which flush everything straight onto the tracks. As long as people don't use them while they're halting at a station, i don't think it's much of a problem.

Having lived in India all my life, I dread going to toilets in the trains. What you missed probably is that each train coach also have a western toilet opposite to the indian cubicle. However, they are also open to the tracks, so no difference in the disposal system. My advise if you travel on trains in India, go easy on the Pepsi. Unfortunately with travel tickets at $10 for a trip covering 1000 Kms that is the best the train authorities can do. If the fare was $100, things would be different.
There is proof that squatting is much better for the human body while disposing waste as opposed to sitting scrunched up on a Western toilet (Karen Kington, etc.). Indian toilet system is good. Because squatting is a good form of exercise and not all westerners can squat properly. When they use water instead of toilet paper it is good in the sense of hygiene. Toilet paper doesn't do clean job. Even in Europe they have bidet near the toilets.

In July i took Mumbai Rajdhani 2952 4rm New Delhi 2 B'bay.. D new LHB coaches and their toilet were really very sophisticated in comparision to conventional trains..
Der were no hole in d loo and it was quite more spacious too..
However Indians have to learn to flush the loo after use.. many usually don't do dat.. thankfully we indeed ensure to wash r hands wid soap after use..

(1) This system is the most practical in the Indian context!(large distances,low cost).
(2) The so called "Indian-style" toilets are much more "hygienic"(especially in the Indian context) as they are "Non-contact toilets".
(3) Indian railways is introducing "Bio-degradable type" toilets in trains...it has started....plan is to do it by 2015....i think...

look sweetheart,i travel in whatever is available,and more usual than not in the coach class,this train is the shatabdi express from delhi to amritsar,well above coach and it was the best train i got into in two months in india.the problem with you indians is that you think everything is thrown against you and thats not always the case,not this one anyway,ive seen trains in switzerland and italy that have the same system

There are many positives and negatives in every culture. The title of the movie clip is not right " india Nude", but otherwise it's just a simple clip displaying indian railway toilets. In July i took Mumbai Rajdhani 2952 4rm New Delhi 2 B'bay.. D new LHB coaches and their toilet were really very sophisticated in comparision to conventional trains..
Der were no hole in d loo and it was quite more spacious too..
However Indians have to learn to flush the loo after use.. many usually don't do dat.. thankfully we indeed ensure to wash r hands wid soap after use..
I appreciate d footage and his point of view to say it makes sense widout d use of chemicals..

The pakigora has lost his head, All cultures are different. One has to be a Roman in Rome. So, we Indians cannot expect to have dry and toilets with toilet paper in our trains. When water is used in large quantities, it needs to be flushed and the only method is Direct discharge onto the tracks.

thanks for clarifying this myth mr Pakigora. Infact westerners use toilet paper and hence their arses aren't clean. Buses and trains here in Canada have a system where the retention tanks are used, when they get full, there's a stink all over the place. The faeces on the tracks is picked up by pigs, scavenging bacteria etc.
