Just my impression, or the NBC commentator was clearly shocked and sad with the Lakers defeat? Sounded really not professional to me,someone from USA who is familiar with NBC and this particular commentator can correct me if i'm wrong. But what I can say for sure is that the commentator treated it like if it was strange,or a shame for Lakers to lose that series, clearly underestimating the POWERFUL squad Spurs had at this time, Spurs won because they were better. The Staples Center looks so cold and boring compared to the old Forum, it's sad they didn't try to renovate it. Madison Square Garden is the only classic arena that still holds a NBA team, Boston at least tried to mantain the classic feeling when they moved to the Fleet Center (aka Boston Garden).
@ElTuco84 The Forum was good in its heyday but it was past its prime. It was time for a new arena. It was showing its age. I like the Staples Center better. It's not perfect. For example the 3-level luxury boxes puts the top rows way too high. The Staples Center doesn't have the intimidating feeling that other arenas have when visiting teams play, with the rows packed on you like in Utah or Sacramento. But Staples is a nicer arena than the Forum. With better amenities.
I like Staples Center and I agree the 3 consecutive suite levels make the nosebleeds a pain! However, I haven't been to a Lakers game at Staples let alone the Forum. I'd attend Clippers or Sparks games should I go there
@ElTuco84 Also a "real" renovation of the Forum would've probably meant the Lakers might have to play in another arena while it was being worked on. They'd have to put in luxury boxes, sky boxes, and maybe better eateries & a cafe and bar... the Forum didn't have a lot of stuff that Staples has.

That Spurs team was a team of ring hungry vets and a young Duncan. This Lakers team was talented, but were transitioning. They got rid of a lot of dead weight between 98 and 99. Del Harris could never control all the stars on the team, Van Excel was a malcontent, Eddy Jones was the invisible man come playoff time, and Elden Campbell was the Kwame Brown of his day. Coach Jackson along with vets Ron Harper, Brian Shaw and AC Green were the last pieces of the puzzle needed.
That Malik Rose dunk was the story of the series for the Lakers - just being outworked by the Spurs! It was back-to-back sweeps in 1998 and 1999 in the same fashion - immaturity by the Lakers and patience by the Spurs and Jazz.

The Staples Center looks so cold and boring compared to the old Forum, it's sad they didn't try to renovate it. Madison Square Garden is the only classic arena that still holds a NBA team, Boston at least tried to mantain the classic feeling when they moved to the Fleet Center (aka Boston Garden).

@ElTuco84 The Forum was good in its heyday but it was past its prime. It was time for a new arena. It was showing its age. I like the Staples Center better. It's not perfect. For example the 3-level luxury boxes puts the top rows way too high. The Staples Center doesn't have the intimidating feeling that other arenas have when visiting teams play, with the rows packed on you like in Utah or Sacramento. But Staples is a nicer arena than the Forum. With better amenities.

Del Harris could never control all the stars on the team, Van Excel was a malcontent, Eddy Jones was the invisible man come playoff time, and Elden Campbell was the Kwame Brown of his day. No...the Spurs beat the Lakers in the 2003 semi-finals 4-2. I still remember Kobe Bryant crying as he sulked to the locker room as he realized that there would be no fourth championship...at least not until 2009, of course.
