I had only heard Emmylou's version by herself, and i love it dearly. But hearing Steve Earl sing it just makes me weep in that perfect empathetic but sorry for yourself way. It has to be one of the most honest, beautiful pieces of writing. I am recently separated due to my addictions and as i sit here drinking one too many pinots I stagger at the beauty that humans are capable of, this song is utterly stunning.
@tobwalt58 Dumping the load by being honest with them, with yourself, is so liberating. Isn't it? I admit my fault to whoever will listen. It's part of my penance. It's been a year, I have yet to release myself from this guilt. I am with you. There, with you.
One of my favorite singer song writers, and my ABSOLUTELY favorite vocalist... Emmylou, if possible, is getting better as she grows healthier, wealthier, and wiser.
She's a Effin' national treasure, no doubt about it! If we get to heaven, we'll hear her...everywhere.
@themilkmister Hello to you, My wife and I have four boys... May I suggest you visit Mrs Byron Katie's site called "The work". Maybe this would help the five of you. Regards,
Townes has been in my life since I was 17 yrs old and I still have a hard time imaging the rest of my life without Townes Van Zandt........His grown son justin townes earle.@5:55
@ghostpine actually, townes died after surgery, but i don't imagine his yrs of substance abuse helped him out much. I've been a fan of Steve's for yrs and yrs. he never dropped a beat, not even when he was really, really dope sick. God bless him.
such a gorgeous song...I never get tired of listening to this.

He's commenting on the fact he's never got over the death of his friend Townes Van Zant
He died of drug abuse, he was a musical genius.

This version is strange - studio (?), applause, hauling tempo, overarranged. The live version on-stage with small band appeals much more to me

what an AMAZING version.it makes me cry.

Damn, this sounds like a studio version. Did you splice the applause in?
