Philosophy is not about been clever, winning arguments or lining your own pocket, although many do just these three.. Philosophy is about finding a better way to live, and then applying it to yourself ! leading by example is always the best argument.

I TOTALLY disagree that philosophy is "how to rationally think". Philosophy is just a pseudo-intellectual way to get yourself deeply confused and doubt things that are common sense.

The sad thing about deciding to study philosophy is that according to an economic way of thinking - if they are not very well compensated the chances are that they are crazy or stupid. Thus, in this small market, one either goes to a school where the philosophy team is well-compensated or one goes to the school where they have half-baked and frustrated idiots. (This argument has many holes; but I dare anyone to enumerate and argue them.) i will grant Dr. Gold a reprieve from abjection until ..

The second thing one learns is that the professors - especially as they have asked tough questions - have come up with answers which permit them to go on living, and which by no means you, as student, are to screw with.

Astonishing. I am still hoping that I have missed some link to a web-site with more context. But all I see is some fathead that thinks that philosophy has answers and that the first thing one learns is .. roughly, clarity of thought. No. The first thing one learns is that the professors have different ideas about your essays and papers. "New standards kids."

I do hope that there is more to this video - maybe a video series. Because this is an indictment of philosophy. This is the stupid sort of pop-philosophy that turns people off. The premises are unclear. The concerns are unclear. The reasoning is unclear. But it is PHILOSOPHY! This guy - without a wiki search - has to be a leftist whack. Thanks philosophy!

To die is to become nothing and nothing does not exist. LOL This wound up being WAY too long(lol) but my point is, is that there is no philosophy without emotion-without feeling. Thoughts can "see", "feel" even "become" the truth, the mind can hold it, but only the heart can give it.

Because of the feeling that all are connected to. The "heart". Anyone can create a robot but without feeling the robot has no will of its own. It only does what it is designed and programed to do. Anything that acts from self intent is a living and feeling being. A rock isnt told to be a rock but it is. Nothing comes into existence without choice but most dont understand this because most are unaware of the choice they made...when they were sperm. LOL Or the choices before that.

Even a single cell feel it. Cells, animals, molecules, atoms, all things act. Even a rock produces action. The all things are made of cells, molecules, and atoms their existence(current form) rely on the bond of these microscopic beings. Bond is a verb and verbs are action and no action can take place without feeling and action is life therefore all things are living. People, animals, planets, stars, you name it. Nothing dies, it only changes. Why?......

But in truth all things are feelings. Thats what makes it real. If you cant FEEL it(touch, see, smell taste, IMAGINE or anything that connects to you in one way or another) then it isnt real and if it isnt real then it doesnt exist. But back to my point. The most important feeling and most powerful feeling/s are the feelings that drive all other feelings. Some may call it "God" but I like to use the term source because it is the source of all things or rather the LIFE of all things....

when you feel the pain of hunger, you eat to feel better. Every action is driven by intent to produce a desired feeling. The feelings are the reason for all things and what is the most important feeling? The feeling of consciousness. All things are feelings, they are just different types. Smells, sounds, objects, you name it and its a feeling, there just different. We associate feeling with the one we have become conditioned to because it is the only feeling we are always aware of-ourselves....

Why the heart? Life is a series of moments. Life is a series of action. All action produces change. Nothing can change without action. Without action all things would stay the same. No growth and no death. Action cannot take place without intent. Intent is "mother" to action. Intention is the desire to change. Like a man intending to eat to rid of hunger. Our intentions drive us to change. What do they change? Our feelings. When you are hot you go somewhere cool to feel different....

There is no question the heart cant answer. The heart cant think therefore it does not know but it doesnt have to because it IS all things. The heart is like a book of knowledge that can give the mind answers they seek but first we must learn the "language of the book". This world has been searching for truth for a long time and the only reason they dont find it is cause they look everywhere but the source of all things-the heart.

And most think their feelings are there thoughts and their thoughts are their feelings. Why? Because they seek truth and wisdom through the mind instead of the heart. The heart was meant to teach the mind. Unfortunately, we live in a world where the people trust their mind over their heart. They dont even let it speak anymore. The mind has great potential but the heart must bring it out. We all use our minds but our minds arent listening to or dont understand the teachings the heart is giving

To seek truth through the mind is an endless journey that will never fulfill. Why? Because the mind doesnt know what it DOESNT know, it only knows what it does. To that what you know is right is not possible because the mind is a student, not teacher. The only thing that will give you answers is the only thing that doesnt lie. Your heart. Feelings never lie. They can be misunderstaood(by the mind) suppressed, and "hidden" but can never lie. Feelings dont lie, our minds do.

The funny thing about the path of truth is it is always uncertain. Wisdom is based on truth and truth attained is "true knowledge". The funny thing is is that none are born wise and none are born with knowledge. Therefore to KNOW what you know and what you do not know is not possible so no philosopher knows they are one. They seek truth and knowledge because they dont have it.

@ophiuchus1130 When i say uncertain(second comment)I am speaking of the mind. The mind wonders and is therefore uncertain. The does not wonder, it only feels therefore is. What is is whats real and whats real is the truth. The heart is truth.

Wisdom is based on the application of understanding. Philosophy is the attempt to gain wisdom through understanding. The key to understanding is having knowledge. Not just any knowledge, the true knowledge. You wont get the right answers unless you ask the right questions. Taking "philosophy" courses doesnt make you a philosopher. Philosophers are those who seek the truth and "walk the path" of finding it. Until you do this, the title of philosopher is nothing more than a title.

Opinions of valuation, like the opinion that something is good or bad, cant be true or false - since they are judgements of valuation.

Good or bad can never be truth or false, it is always a matter of how you valiate it,
