'Tone' is not something you can have 'more' or 'less' of. You can just have *different* tones. Thicker strings just sound deeper because there is a louder fundamental frequency and quieter overtones. This is not better, it's just different. There are guitarists with great 'tone' using anything from 8s to 13s. It's almost like the 'megapixels' thing in cameras. "My tone is OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAND!".
I can understand using heavier gauge for EAD, since it helps them to sound in tune, but I can't see the benefit for GBE - it just makes it harder to do bending/vibrato/legato, and makes you more likely to injure yourself so you can't play at all! I use 9 11 16 26 36 48 and it sounds fine.
if you want to hear the difference between big and little strings........Pluck your high e string constantly (steadily) then have your other hand down tune the string down slowly. At the end it sounds horrible. If you tighten it, it sounds better.
So if you tune your e string to a b, it won't sound good. If you play heavy metal with fuzz, it could work.
Another thing to consider is that the string tension also rises when you raise the bridge. It sounds better but it's harder to play.
It’s so nice to see music bringing people together; what do they put in the water over there, steroids? SRV tuned down to Eb, so all this macho posturing about ‘reel heavy strings dewd’ is just that, posturing.....when you detune to that extent it feels like you’re playing light gauge strings; it’s about tone not tautness dearies.
Stevie used up to an .018 for the high E.Unfortunately the treble strings don't set the overall tone the bass strings do.Skinny top/heavy basses is best.Robin Trower used .08's and got a fatter tone than Stevie. It's the man not the machine!
You are an idiot. Robin Trower didn't achieve tone nearly as hard as Stevie. In addition to that, the heaviest Stevie used was .013. No Stratocaster could take strings that heavy without warping the fuck out of the neck.
@Carthsgtr You are a stupid mother fuck you know that?
YEA!! OK LITTLE BOY. Keep your inaccurate comments coming, I love to see how damn ignorant people are!
SRV stated that he played .018 guage strings at one point, that is on film for everyone to hear. So go ahead and call him a liar. I will call you a little split tail bitch for being a know it all. I bet you really don't know much of shit besides how to wipe your ass and feed your face.
I know this isn't my discussion and all but, you know, you're the one being a know it all.
and Carthsgtr, what this o56kid is trying to say if you decode his rant is probably along the line of: "He probably used a B string for the lower e string, hence it could've been 0.18"
it helps to raise the action as high as possible,, the strings bend easier..
the 13's make the guitar sound way better,,,practice on a acoustic,,,it helps
and remember there are great blue grass flat pickers that fly all over a heavy med 13 strung martin,, the problem is most electric players start on light strung guitars and are used to playing wimpy..
Sure, the book is "The Fender Stratocaster Handbook" by Paul Balmer, page 165, most often he used 013 as you said, you can get the book at Stewmac.com.
@upreydeen Concerning using a .016 on the E string, I think you might have made a mistake. The most I've ever heard Stevie use was a .013 on the high E. What was your source of information?
OMG stevie didnt use 13's as soon as the whole fuckin world gets that they wont waste their time trying to play those which are way to big it actually takes from tone at a certain point
not bad...but id probably try and clean some of those licks up a bit. the difference between sounding great and sounding "meh" is smaller than youd think....but the work to get that little extra bit is pretty steep.
Many people misunderstand SRV's string set. He did NOT use a .013 "set" meaning every string is thicker for better balance. He primarily used a larger high and low E, while the other strings are pretty much what you'd see in a pack of 11's. His tech also would give him 11's on night when he wasn't feeling so strong. For thick SRV tone, get Rene Martinez's strings, they're wound in halfs(11.5, etc...) This means when they're broken in, they still have good chime and snap at a fresh set of 11's.
@fakeemailbox .....Hello fellow geetar freaks! According to Dan Erlewine's
"Guitar Player Repair Guide-2nd Edition",Stevie Ray used GHS Nickel Rocker strings,gauged.....013-.015-.019(plain)-.028-.038-.058 tuned down 1/2 step, across the board and his 12th fret action measured 5/64"(treble side"E") and 7/64"(bass side"E")........you're welcome!.....Peace
@imapkn Thank you!!! It's about time someone did their homework. I get so tired of people saying " oh he used 17's or 20's. Bullshit!! 13's for a while then down to 11's once he sobered up. Stop the cock measuring contest when it's not even your own. Thanks imapkn for settling this.
"I've heard that if you put thick strings...its harder to bend !!!!! Is that true ?!!"
It depends on a couple of things. If you have a Stratocaster...yes. There is more tension in the strings because they simply have more mass. If you have a Les Paul (stop tail piece)strung traditionally...yes...same thing applies. However, if you have a Les Paul and you do something called "Top Wrapping" (google it..and look at the photos) the tension is greatly lessened and will allow for bends.
What are the sizes of all the strings? From what I've been seeing, my set of Ernie Ball 12's are thicker all around than 13's except for the E's.
Mine go 12, 16, 24plain, 32, 44, 56
I tried to find 13's but I can't find a company I like that makes them. Who makes yours? I was thinking about just buying a bunch of singles from D'Addario and making my own set. But I definitely love the tone of thick strings.
9's are definitely small strings and I'm not recommending them. I just wanted everyone that plays 9's to realize how far they have to go to achieve optimal tone. ;)

stevie also tuned to Eb which helped and it makes a big difference. Just play .11s you can get the same tone. Attack and the rake are the most important part to getting his tone. He often played .11 or 12 high e if his fingers were shot anyway.
lol dude thats why I don't play 13's. I'm not trying to rip on you, I' m just saying you gotta have some serious finger strength to play on those. Good luck man haha
Hey man, I think you should come down to 10's so you can develop better technique. I think your srv tone is great but to get anywhere near his standard you need to start a little lighter.
may I make a sugestion try too add mor bass and mid and pull back your treble a bit you have a great srv tone now but If you want the alpine valley show tone thats what you gotta do...
@bho69 Try playing 13's. I did. With the full on 25.5" scale tuned only to Eb. Now you can see why Stevie was making faces like he was in pain during songs like Texas Flood. They were REAL! It hurts like HELL!
ive been playing on 12s for about a 2 years but im going down to 11 to get a different tone im shooting for, 12s a great for SRV stuff but offer much versatilty it also torture on your fingers ive had so many calisus torn off i lost count
great job man, but if you dont already have them get some big jazz picks (i recommend jazz III picks) they give you huge attack, they're thick, but they only make your technique better, and are impossible to switch back from. After using some jazz III's i couldnt go back to my standard .73 ml picks.
yeah , i know what your saying, once i went on vacation and bought a little bag of jazz 3 picks and, over time , ive been losing them one by one and now i feel weird and sloppy with other picks and i just have like 2 or 3 left.
now im in trouble because where i live, they are practically impossible to get, im thinking of orthering a bag or 2 online =/
so any possible users , beware, you will love them, but you cant go back =P
Hey, i am a massive fan of Jazz 3's and it is true once you start using them there is just no turning back if i use a rounded pick a jim dunlop tortex pick i can still play but it doesn't feel right.
