  • Looks like he's off to a Smurf convention at 18:30

  • I could listen to Ben rant for hours. He most certainly deserves some sort of TV show, you shouldn't have to seek out sensible people on the internet, they should be celebrated loudly and in plain view.

  • ben would have made a good hobbit lol

  • smeeeee heeeeee

  • *Helping people to understand* Teaching/education in essence. Marvelous!

  • Very interesting!

  • Its a tricky thing: navigating London traffic in the rain while trying to absorb all Ben is saying. Well done, Robert!

  • Can we talk about his hat at 18:30 . No, nobody? Just me then? okay. Cool

  • @mooimafish17 brilliant, simply brilliant!! :D

  • @mooimafish17 I think it's ever so slightly magnificent...

  • What was done to Simon Singh was not fair, and I'm a fan of chiropractors. What we think about the subject is irrelevent to the fact that a man was taken to court for simply speaking his mind!

  • Damn! I missed Wobbly Leg 101 at University haha

  • * I will commit to saying that there is definitely bullshit within the field of PSYCHIATRY.

  • That's one epic hat.

  • i think Ben is lieing on a basic level, if you have ever understood basic Chinese face reading you will understand what i am saying. Certain parts he is telling the truth but if you look at his eyes you can tell he is lying at others. I'm not saying he is always a liar, but either follow your gut/ heart or understand at least basic face reading.

  • Doctors of letters are often very unhappy about Medical Doctors calling themselves "Doctors", as they don't have PHDs, they just have MDs.

  • I have really enjoyed watching and listening to this. Have done several times now, and I am glad it is now on here.

  • Where are you guys driving to? lol.

Also: is driving and giving an interview really the best combination? haha

  • lol this is brilliant podcast idea. plus, Goldacre new hero of sorts Like non-fictional scientific real-life Dr. Who.

  • "That would be the optimal situation"

Was that on the court papers - "Fruitcake vs Serious Club"

  • he doesnt actually work as a GP at all, caketheory is right

  • @caketheory oh fuck off

  • @caketheory How do you know what Robert (the driver) is thinking? I understood "proper doctor" to mean a doctor with a medical degree instead of for instance law or theology. Psychiatrists do have the same basic medical training as dentists, surgeons et.c.

Robert doesn't say "you can fix...", he says "I wouldn't have a clue if someone came in with a wobbly leg" (in context of being a layperson), and he also interrupts Ben as he is answering, so I don't think he was intentionally misleading.

  • @BentStigsen Most doctors that appear on TV always specify their speciality. For example if someone appears on the BBC News they are introduced as "psychologist, psychiatrist, gp, cardiologist etc".

He never specifies what does and the reason is because psychiatry is a fraud and he's a Quack. Most people don't know what he does and I'm just trying to raise public awareness. Psychiatry still uses ECT treatment and he's calling everyone else a Quack.

  • @caketheory Psychiatry is a fraud? You speak as an expert, I presume?

  • @webbtje You don't need to be an expert to call homeopathy or psychiatry fraud.

I've done a few videos explaining why its fraud.

  • @caketheory OK, how would you help a man with depression without resorting to Prozak exactly?

  • @webbtje I wouldn't give prozac, I would make them look closely at their lives and see what kind of change they could make to their lifestyle, also exercise etc.

  • @caketheory So you'd do exactly what a psychiatrist does. That's rather telling, isn't it? They're not all antidepressant-shovelling machines, you know.

I'm still waiting for your specific criticisms of Goldacre rather than evidentially-unsupported ramblings and rantings about a subject you seem not to fully grasp.

  • @webbtje My criticism is that Goldacre shouldn't be calling other people quacks when hes a psychiatrist. Psychiatry has no biological test for any mental illness and yet they claim mental illness is caused by a "chemical imbalance". You take your question about depression, they don't give you a brain scan and find out your serotonin level and then correct your imbalance and take you off prozac when your serotonin has stabalized.

  • @webbtje The same can be said for their theory on schizophrenia, they think its caused by too much dopamine in the frontal lobes of the brain however they don't check your dopamine levels to find out if they've stabalized they just keep you on them for years and these drugs damage your brain.

  • @webbtje On top of all this they still don't know why ECT works, they're experimenting with deep brain stimulation,

Just last week Dr Mario Capecchi anounced a bogus breakthrough claiming mental illness might be cured by bone marrow transplant. He found that agitated rats were less agitated after the bone marrow treatment and concluded the immune system MIGHT have something to do with mental illness. So in 2010 they haven't got a clue and yet they've told the public they're "experts"

  • @caketheory Might. Are you aware of what the word 'might' means, you cretin?

  • @caketheory

Caketheory, as a 4th year psychology major about to enter his studies as a Master's student who also prefers non drug based treatments, I think it's myopic to say that psychiatry is quackery.

    .

The majority of studies to my knowledge demonstrate that the best treatment for a majority of disorders lies in a combination of cognitive-behavioural therapy and drugs.

  • @caketheory You're allowed your opinion but the rest of us are allowed to laugh at you for having such a ridiculously stupid view and we can insult you for attempting to convince other people to believe the crap you believe in, in an attempt to feel not as lonely. You obviously have issues with psychiatry, I suggest you continue taking that lithium until the voices go away you mad, massive twat.

  • @jacksawild Well I've done 8 video's and people have written loads of comments and most of them agree with me that psychiatry is fraud. Just type "psychiatry" in the youtube search engine and see how many people there are exposing psychiatry as a peudoscience.

You can laugh all you like your just a stupid slut.

  • @caketheory It is true that there is much about psychiatry which is not fully understood and that is because it attempts to deal with the most complicated known entity in the universe. i.e The human brain. It is a branch of medicine and to try to undermine it in it's entirety is irresponsible and insanely idiotic when it demonstratively does a lot of good. My general rule of thumb is not to take intellectual advice from someone who does not understand apostrophes or basic grammar.

  • @caketheory psychiatry isn't a fraud, it's just the medical branch that deals with mental disorders; Like the other medical branches, it's evidence based and follow same ethical rules. If there is no evidence that a treatment, in a certain situation, is better than alternatives or nothing, it is not used. ECT, crude and cruel as it might seem, is a treatment that, in some cases, is better than the alternatives. Same can be said of amputation, that surgeons sometimes resort to.

  • @BentStigsen I did a video called "psychiatry - how they make a diagnosis" which explains why its fraud. Also my Favourite list has got a few.

  • @caketheory Perhaps you should look at the career-path in order to become a psychiatrist. In the UK you have to be a "proper doctor" first. GPs are the least qualified in the medical profession; all GPs do is diagnose. With the internet etc an educated and intelligent person can often narrow their symptoms down to a few possibilities, if not what the actual affliction on their own.

  • @Sidowse So if a crystal healer did a medical degree in the past and is currently a practicing crystal healer, does that make crystal healing a real science or anything to do with medicine?

Also I've got alot of respect for GP's. At least they send you for blood tests and scans to verify the diagnosis and in some cases like HIV people may not even have any symptoms. Psychiatry is a pseudoscience there is no medical test its a fraud.

  • @caketheory Oh I agree entirely that Psychiatry for the majority is bullshit. However, they are still "proper doctors".

  • @Sidowse Ok so if you think psychiatry is "bullshit" do you think its fair that Ben Goldacre calls alternative medicine "bullshit" when he is practising quackery himself?

  • @caketheory I said that psychiatry for the majority is bullshit. I may be wrong and it may be bullshit for the minority, but I will commit to saying that there is definitely bullshit within the field of psychology. The heading "Alternative medicine" is unregulated, which means that any sort of treatment, no matter how bizarre, could be said to be "Alternative medicine". So Goldacre is right, if slightly hypocritically, that there is a lot of nonsense in alternative-medicine.

  • @caketheory Continued... It takes 13 YEARS to become a psychiatrist! That is a huge amount of time, which means that if someone is prepared to become a psychiatrist and continue to practice, they are not going to think that their profession is bullshit; hypocrisy is to be expected. The majority of successful people are so because they never question what they are being taught, even if what they are taught is bullshit. Case and point religious people.

  • @caketheory 7 years to become a proper doctor and then a further 6 years to be a psychiatrist . I have no idea what the content of either of those courses is like. I can only comment on my experience with one psychiatrist. You are asking me to commit a theory right across the board. Which is the same mistake that you and Goldacre make; you CANNOT generalise. Yes psychiatry for an awful lot of cases is bullshit, FACT. However, it does also help a lot of people, FACT.

  • @caketheory I said in a PM that you will find stupid people in EVERY profession, because exams only test concentration and short-term memory. I entertain the possibility that psychiatry fails when the psychiatrist is too stupid to discern between environmental-influences (a genuine reason to correctly feel depressed anxious etc) and a genetic disorder. The brain is far too complex and varied to be treated by drugs prescribed by strangers for the majority of cases.

  • i never knew UK's chief drug advisor was sacked for advocating that policies should be based on actual scientific evidence.

I did a google and found an article by Ben Goldacre (the guy in this video) talking about the sacking titled: "Are your drugs laws working? Ask a scientist".

  • Great stuff! thanks a lot !
