After the military takeover of Estonia, the USSR in June 1940 demanded a shadow government to be set up that subsequently dissolved Estonia's civil society, sovietized its government institutions, nationalized the economy and shut down free press and civic organizations. In an atmosphere of terror and massive human rights violations, a puppet parliament was elected in July 1940.
Nazis and Soviets made the same things in different ways. Democracy is the only solution. Tolitarism both Nazis or Soviets were cruel system of life. Estonia had to suffer for quite 50 years of Soviet occupation....many Estonian were deported in Siberia where they died. Many other Estonian lost their houses and had to learn Russian that got compulsory language
@fabienik well democracy just means the totalitarianism of the masses. You sure wouldnt agree that majority should be able to just vote on who you should marry or that they can steal all your property and so on. What counts is LIBERTY (personal and economical) and goverment that doesnt have the power to interfere with ones live. Democracy should be very strictly limited. Because you should live your life how you see fit and not how majority says.
@Jigssaw1989 i agree with you Liberty is the only way. Democracy means liberty...no nazi no soviet no fascist. Here in Italy we live in freedom from 1945, in Estonia from 1991 unfortunately, but now we are all together in Ue to cooperate for a real Liberty.
I am not Russian and I think Stalin was one of the greatest CRIMINALS to ever walk the Earth.
However, I also think that the Soviet Story is an extremely HATEFUL and BIGOTED film. It exploits painful memories for POLITICAL gains. The sponsor of the film is a collection of conservative, right-wing political parties called the UEN Group. It's clearly a politically motivated PROPAGANDA film that has little to do with objective history and everything with discrediting the left. It sickens me.
@JD12ish well you are typical russian ..you only say stalin is criminal ...but stalin didint alone killed people...he had huge help ...and killing took place before and after him.
@MrEestimaa WoW! I had no idea I was actually Russian even though I am not. Don’t be simply and don’t confuse my defending historic truth with defending soviet crimes!
@MrEestimaa Of course Stalin had thousands of people doing the killing for him. It was a cannibalistic SYSTEM, not a one-man show.
How do you explain the Germans, those nice people that make such nice cars, turning into blood-thirsty Nazis in a matter of years and helping Hitler kill millions of innocent people? Remember, the Weimar Republic was nevertheless a DEMOCRACY.
@MrEestimaa I would love to see how long YOU would manage to keep your humanity in the USSR of the 1930's through the 1950's. Would you also help Stalin kill innocent people? Maybe you would become a guard in a gulag? Or would you rather become a prisoner yourself?
@MrEestimaa USSR under Stalin rewarded the psychopath. If you killed more people you got promoted. That’s why Beria, Yagoda and Yezhov became heads of the NKVD. They themselves were also all shot.
Stalin’s successor Nikita Khrushchev was his trusted deputy and had hundreds if not thousands shot. If he wouldn’t he would probably had met the same fate. BUT! Once Khrushchev took power he DENOUNCED Stalin. Get it now? Things are not as simple as your little brain would like them to be.
Yes. They should teach in schools same way about communism than they do about nazism. I"m surprise if the 90% of american and british retards even know where Estonia is.
Putin isattempting to re-write history ... the russians didn't invade the Baltics ... it was stalin, the uSSr ... !!!??? More ruSSian propaganda for the stupid ruSSian masses.
Why has Putin placed a news black-out on the russian fires (august 2010)? Doesn't want anybody (esp russians) to know facts?
1st guy, Tõnis Lukas(minister of education):There's too much violence in the movie. It might shock students and they might have hard time studying.
Mart Laar 2nd (historian and member of parlament - Pro-movie): I dont like word force ("force some1 to do something").But I think using it as a study-material is fine. This movie reprisents our(Estonian) views of history and also this kind of info is found on our textbooks.Suprising thing for me was that Karl Marx was the 1st one to use word holocaust
Lukas again: I haven't seen any movie that shows Stalin's and Hiltlers propaganda were same. But for some reason Europe is only able to judge Hitler guilty as one voice, but eyes are closed when it comes to communism.I think Russia should also show this movie to their people so they could understand their own history abit more.
And then the other guy said that all fact were correct.
3rd Harjakas:Every nation should be able to manufactior their own material(textbooks etc). But it doesnt mean that we can't use this movie in high schools as factology.
For me new things were :MKD ja SS co-operation document signed by Müller and Beria.I never seen this document in a movie with signature.
@Antanas357 Where in Estonia is there faschism nowadays? Hmm? Everybody knows, that there are more human rights violations in China and Russia, than anywhere else.
balts ? .. In every countrie there are lazy people and those are the ones who support communism , such people did communism crimes against their own people , but you cant label all nation only analysing its morons , lazy ones etc ..
Balts are really good at switching loyalties when it's convenient. They'll start making movies about "foul West and great Islam" when the islamists take over. What they won't tell you is that they themselves oppressed other Balts at Stalin's and Hitler's behest.
@Pseudologic Its well known history that latvians fighting in the Red Army fought against Latvians allied with nazis on latvian soil. That is the fate of small countries you choose a side or an ideology cause there are no other options. But they all wanted Latvia to be independent. After WW1 latvians fought Russians and Germans to gain independence.
@ordio1 My ancestors left Baltic in 1920s and went to Siberia because they were persecuted by Estonians. How's that for a surprise? It's your fate to be dependent and to be conquered. You've been conquered by Teutons, Swedes, Germans, Russians and now you're dependent on EU and Finland. How about you be independent to the end and not beg everyone for money?
@Pseudologic My ancestors are Latvian not Estonian, before WWII latvia had one of the highest standards of living in europe and was not dependent on foreign aid but after the war and 50 years of communism destroyed the country everything had and has to be rebuilt all the mechanisms that make a democratic society. But Latvia will be successful once again, its not so bad living in the EU, the Russians that live here and don't want to go back to their homeland know this.
@Pseudologic No but those crimes occurred during Nazi occupation NOT during Latvian independence. During Latvian independence 1920-1940. Jews lived in harmony with the local population. Ofcourse that changed during Nazi occupation. Also you have to realise that the Nazis weren't the first to persecute jews in Latvia, the soviets started 12 months earlier when they occupied Latvia and deported thousands to siberia, among these people were thousands of jews.
@ordio1 Not according to historians. Jews had a hard time during 1920-1940 and the Nazis were an excuse for Latvians to start killing jews. You should do some research.
@Pseudologic You should learn historical fact. My research is from jewish history of Riga compiled by jewish historians. Where's your history come from? Russian propaganda. I know jews had a harder time in Russia before WW2 than in Latvia. In Latvia before WW2 there was freedom of religion but not in the soviet union.
"... tantamount or even worse crimes. I really think that for Russia to understand its problems in history this movie should be spread around in russia and would be necessary for russian citizens and people of russian nationality to watch this (movie), because it isnt pressurizing the crimes commited in the balticum, its rather pressurizing the crimes commited in Russia and the Ukraine". " This movie doent farse history, it brings forth some points, but i dont see any farsing, fact bending..."
Why? Are "the Russians" the exact same as "the Soviets"? Can you not grasp that these are two different things, and that "the Russians" were merely the biggest victims of the Soviet Union's atrocities...? Every time you condemn "the Russians" for Soviet misdeeds, you are reinforcing one of the great evil myths of the twentieth century - a myth fully as evil as the communism = Judaism myth, or the "stab in the back" myth.
Dude, i was simply translating what the politicians said.
And besides, noone of them is condemning the russians for the crimes of the soviets. They are condemning the soviets for ther crimes and the russians for denying the crimes and gloryfying the criminals. They even have the gall to harbour the soviet criminals from other countries in their country.
PS. I have nothing against jews if you were thinking that.
@paulgadaloff Yes but why is the soviet era still glorified in Russia today??? The problem is the government which has been elected by the people. What did Putin say? "The collapse of the soviet union was the biggest catastrophe of the 20th century" They continually deny most of the crimes committed by the soviet union. Are there any Russians in the current Parliament, ofcourse. So we can blame Russians.
""... comparison and such phrame-to-phrame of Stalin´s and Hitler´s whole propaganda mechanisms exposion including Hitlers poster, Stalins poster, Hitlers poster, Stalins poster on whatever aspect of life. ... absolutely authentic material..." The movie has unleashed a wave of protests and russian displeasure, even tough in this documentary no nationalities were disparaged. The soviets supplied the germans with food at the start of their campaign, teached the SS throatcutters in the 30s..."
""I dont love using the word "forcibility", but the use of this movie as an education movie is appropriate because generally our textbooks represent the same things."
For Mart Laar there was something surprising in the movie that he did not know before: " For example I did not know that the first person to use the term holocaust for exterminating classes or nationalities was Karl Marx." The movie is thought of as good and right by historian and central party member politician Küllu Arjakas...
"In russia the latvian documentary "Soviet Story" is called a farse. The science and education minister Tõnis Lukas supported the idea that this movie should be spread around. He wouldnt suggest this to schoolchildren tough, becuase its too shocking. "There is too much natural violence for an educational movie and could just turn off the minds and wouldent achieve its goal". Historian and parliament member Mart Laar thinks that the use of this movie for educational purposes is justified..."
