  • wonderful

  • He's a poet for christ's sake. What are all the assanine comments about his being a radical or a democrat or whatever ? Get a clue and talk to those who knew or know, read and listen, and look between the lines. Truth is what is. It doesn't change like mercury with the stinking winds of fashion or the stinking lies of fascists. We loved you Phil Ochs then, as now, as Joe Hill before you. Peace Brothers and Sisters

  • rehearsals for retirement FAB!!

  • This is was recorded at a live concert in Vancouver in 1968. It was right after Ochs experienced the fiasco of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago - the beginning of the end of his dream of changing the country. It was recorded years before he was mugged. A Beat poet Alen Ginsberg was also on the bill. He plays the bells for 'The Bells'.

  • Never heard either of these before, and I thought I had heard all of Phil Ochs. Seeing as how there isn't going to be any more, I'm glad there is some that was saved for me :{)

  • Oh yeah I have this great song.. Just a lot of fun as I am liberal but not radical. Just like Phil's voice, pictures he paints, melodies, and the lyrics I take with a grain of love and skepticism. I don't have to agree with Phil to know I love this man.

  • Thanks for posting this. I don't think anyone was a better songwriter than Phil.`

  • I put this in a playlist called more tv wich is ironic because phil ochs was banned fro television .

  • @spacepatrolman Kool, thanks.

  • @AnarchistOpposition

Any idea when he did this version? From the sound of his voice, it seems like it was after he got mugged. Am I right?

  • @benmcfee Which one of the songs are you asking about?

  • I'd ask about both, just out of curiosity, but you can really hear his voice cracking in the first one.

  • @benmcfee The first one was, the second, no.

  • @benmcfee It was from a concert he did in Vancouver, B.C. in late 1968, after the fascist nightmare in Chicago and after the assassinations of Dr. King and Robert Kennedy. Phil's spirit was badly shaken at this point, he was beginning to go into decline in terms of mental health, and the effects can be seen in his performance here(compare it to his previous "Live" album from 1965).

The tape of this concert was discovered a few years ago after being lost for decades.
