Great Job dude, that tutorial was really awesome, I'am looking into joysticks for my new PS3 and I'am not sure if I should buy a Standard or Tournament Joystick, but I think either way I will mod it after watching your vid.
My friend I want to ask you if this stick is similar to the one MadCatz made for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom for the Wii. This would be my first MOD and I would love to switch the stick for a Sanwa one with and American style TOP. Is is as simple as you make it look? What tools do you reccomend? Another thing, do you any idea or sugestions on how to replace the art the controller has (Tatsunoko background)?? I would like to replace it with a solid color background.
I modded my joystick using your text guide, and it looks beautiful. However, my bubble ball won't stay fixed in place. Do I have to do something with that "screw" in the center of the joystick panel, or what? Is there any way to make the balltop stay in place without gluing it? It hasn't actually come off yet, but it is kind of annoying to be playing with a balltop that slowly unscrews itself as you play.
I'm wondering WHY we should replace the stick. I mean, I grew up with a square restrictor plate, but is that the only difference? or is the MadCatz jostick (the actual joystick piece) the same in quality?
@NitghVision absolutely not of the same quality, my man. the top notch sanwa used here is god-tier compared to the barely adequate stock madcatz stick. all it takes is one hadoken and you can tell. lol.
Thanks a lot for this! :D I mashed my light punch button too much and broke it so I replaced it with the all punch button lol. Works just fine cept the weird coloring. :P *Favorites*
I tried removing the connectors for the buttons (switching them for Sanwa buttons) but I accidentally pulled the wire off the tip. Is there any way to fix that?
He's like a direct sanwa vendor or something. You can get the sanwa stick, buttons, and an extra octagon restrictor plate for 56 bucks total. He let me pick the colors, included the ball top for the stick, and shipped everything same day, brand new.
Helpful tip: Sanwa buttons actually have the name "Sanwa" engraved into the plastic.
Great tutorial, I think I am going to try it. One thing though, I just read on shoryuken forums that an octo restrictor in a SE stick causes problems.
Replacing the restrictor plate is purely optional. The square restrictor plate comes stock with these Sanwa joysticks. Many prefer the octagonal restrictor plates but I've actually come to warn up to the square plate.
Sun you are a lifesaver I copped a SE stick and the LT button got shot to shit in a matter of days I called madcatz and I was gonna ship it to them but after watching this I might just go to amazon and order some sanwa buttons it'll probably be better than shipping it to them so they can replace the buttons with the same crap thanks again
@lshsballer if you ever notice on your SE Where in the corners they feel like 90 degree angles its a little harder to pull of hadoukens and shoryukens with it, it makes it a bit more smooth kinda feels like theres no corners.
dude can you tell me this i bought 8 seimitsu ps-14-kn buttons can these buttons light up if so how and if not what buttons do you have to get i have a TE stick thanks
hello, my ball doesn't spin. I mean, i tried to screw it away, but it's loose. It's like the metal part inside the ball got fucked up....it's loose and i can't screw it anymore. What can I do? I'm thinking about cutting the stick so i can get it away, but i don't have the correct tools. Any advice? It's really impossible, i hold the ball and screw with the screwdriver, everything spins but the ball remains in place.
I have a TE stick and a modded SE stick...only problem is the Madcats wiring harness on the SE broke as there was a ton of glue on it. Im confused on how to set up the harness part connected to the pins on the board itself. I know the way the Sanwa harness connects to the JLF and I assume it goes the opposite on the board any thoughts?
Its my Madcatz SE SF4 stick. The original harness that came with it is junk now, as the end connected to the board (not joystick) completely came out of the plastic snap in piece. I have the JLF in it and the Sanwa harness has a plastic snapin connection to the JLF..but the ground and 4 direction going to the board of the stick are loose meant for soldering. I just have no idea how the other end lines up with the stick PCB.
This is quite groovy. Thanks for putting this video up. I think it will be a good way to show those who may be a bit squeaming with modding how easy and simple it can be.

what did you say at 2:39? "This is a (something) version of this" no disrespect just can't understand what you said.
Killcycle1989 3 months ago
@Killcycle1989 I think he meant this (what he was pointing to, the original madcatz joystick) is basically a generic copy of the sanwa sticks
KaMak719 2 weeks ago
thanks for this simple and insightful tutorial...now all i have to do is wait for my sanwa parts to come in the mail..
one question tho'...how much would you say having sanwa parts instead of the madkatz ones improves your game?

You may need to replace the shaft, which means buying a new joystick assembly. Try a rag and pliers to twist the ball top.
