  • omg 30 dollars for a trim....thats crazy.

  • i love spirited away!!!! its one of my favorite movies!!

  • haha, damn I'd have nothing to offer for an introduction. pretty pathetic man. I grew up in south jersey - not a damn thing to talk about. and I HATE anime/manga :P

starting to second guess my application to JET . . .

  • @risingsun08107 talk about your family, what you did when you were a student, your hobbies, etc. You don't have to make it long - my recent one for my college students was only about 15 minutes total.

  • @myargonauts holy shit you replied fast

  • man the way things are goin' I hope this program is still around when I'm old enough to apply. by the way, how many years of college do you need to get you' BS or BA? and manga star wars? I didn't know they had that. also bleach is my fave show but I'm not into manga. that's cool I saw spirited away when I was little, not the whole thing though.

  • Hmm so how many omiyage should we bring? And what makes a good omiyage exactly?

  • I think you've watched the other omiyage vlog by now - I hope it answered your questions

  • Yeah--Shounen Jump! 'Course, I wonder if they would look down on a 25 year-old woman who liked shounen manga? Or think it was cool? I dunno....

  • definitely cool! :D

  • Would they be able to cut my hair...I'm black. I would propaly have to go to Tokyo right?

  • you would certainly find barbers with more "gaijin" experience in larger cities, but my guess is you could find some salon or barbershop that can give you a good cut just about anywhere.

  • Haha, if you came with a shonen jump at my school I would probably go crazy too XDDD.

  • right so i'm thinking of applying for jet when the window opens again and argh! introductions, jikoshokai, shit i'm going to have to really get over my talking in-front of groups phobia

  • ha ha - ummm yeah. :)

Not only will you have to give a few speeches when you first arrive, you'll often be the center of attention the entire time you're here.

  • so this jikoshokai you give, is it basically you repeating yourself the 20 odd times you do it?

  • basically, yes. So I hope you're an interesting person and won't bore yourself. :)

But you will change it slightly depending on the age of the students in the class you're presenting in front of. The way you say things and the information you choose to include is very different for 8 year olds as opposed to 14 year olds.

I talk more about my family, what I did when I was a student, my favorite bands and movies, etc with older kids and more about simple likes/dislikes with younger kids.

  • hmmm...my student days were occupied by drink, drugs and poor grades, are these ok subjects? lol...joke ;). thanks for the replies though.

  • Hi,

Thanks for these videos - very informative! I'd love more info on the actual teaching bit (do you have to plan your own lessons, if so what are they, etc.) Also, if you've learned a little bit of Japanese is it ok to drop in a few words to clarify your jikoshokai and lessons or do they want you to stick to English only?

    Thanks

  • I will do some vlogs with teaching tips and advice, but they will be in August or September, after the new JETs have arrived in Japan.

Every teacher you work with is going to be a little different, but I've rarely had any get upset if I use a little Japanese from time to time.

  • I was not expecting you to say you have jikoshokai that many times. That's like over 60 times for you to do it. I enjoy talking about myself, but that many times would bore myself. LOL! Do you change the way you present the jikoshokai (じこしょかい) depending on what grade you're at? I would think the 9th graders would act differently to what you're talking about then the 3rd graders would.

  • Marvel comics > any manga. Really enjoyed this video :D.

  • w/e

  • I totally know what you're talking about! The other exchange students and I had were still 'introducing' ourselves a couple months before we left! They weren't as good as your 自己紹介、though!

  • Naruto! lol I was not expecting you to pull that out or the Bleach manga. By the way, how much Japanese did you know before going to Japan?

  • I took Japanese for one year in college before coming, but I got Cs and didn't study as hard as I should have, so I didn't speak much when I arrived, but I didn't come with zero ability.

  • heeh! your haircut was takai desu nee! Even in NY standards but it looks pretty good as long as you feel good about it. By the way... I got my placement to Fukui-ken... do you know anything about it.. Again thank you for such great podcast... i'm starting to take pictures of everything now even more than before hehe

  • haircut lookin' smart :D

  • san jyu dora? for haircut! kitai

I guess its good iam (hage)

  • cool =)

    but 300$ is expensive!!!!!

  • $300 or $30? LOL

  • LOL

  • Nice haircut.
