@jazpyy Hmm, I would agree that Doctor Who had become jaded, defeated and a bit lifeless in the 80s but it was ALLOWED to, and it needn't have been. You could write an essay on the programme's history and it's socio-political/historical context and whatnot, but the bottom line is that it was a hugely popular show in the 60s and 70s, and to quote Steven Moffat; "I hate this orthodoxy that DW only got GOOD in 2005..." I'm a fan of RTD, but what he did was make DW matter AGAIN... (tbc)
@thyasus QAF, I take it you aren’t gay. Look we can argue forever about what we think, and that’s just it, it's what we THINK. The man is an inspiration to writers like me who are trying to break into the world of TV, who are trying to get their names on a message board like this and become recognised for breaking moulds, smashing TV ratings, getting people talking. Every writer has flops, every genius has moments of "Oh dear" no one is perfect ALL of the time.
I was thinking maybe Elton or George Michael would have been higher... But he has pretty much behind all those BBC Wales shows for the last few years, Doctor Who, Torchwood, SarahJane, Life On Mars, Ashes To Ashes... You have to be pretty darned powerful to turn Cardiff into Hollywood...
This is interesting. I never really thought of a showrunner as an American idea, but I wonder how you do it without that showrunner? The head writer should be the person setting the tone and keeping it consistent.
