  • Dang if I marked time like that, my legs would be DEAD.

  • Thanks for posting this, I had the wonderful opportunity to be Fred Sanford's judges assistant in 1995 for an indoor drumline show. What an amazing guy, he was super nice and easy going. We talked about this drum solo at the time and how it was still something us "young guys" still admired and enjoyed. Awesome video!!

  • I'm wondering when did corps switch from slings to carriers. Show style lines still use carriers.

  • Kent Cater.

  • tri's are so stupid lol

  • Damn, those tenors are high.

  • Marching mallet instruments!

  • hmm the lick the basses are playing at the very begginning of the video sounds VERY similar to their bass cadence today.

  • @IHATEPLAID That's cause it is the same cadence!

  • This is by far, one of the coolest, most bad-ass DL videos I have ever seen. I haven't been this reved up over drumline media since listening to a 1993 Cadets DL tape in the summer of 1994. Thank you for posting this!

  • Love the Old School stuff,

Thanks for posting the Video green cowboy.

fred was my uncle and it was great watching him do what he loved to do.

  • which corps is this

  • @347826able SCV

  • Awesome video!!! I sure miss the old days of drum corps.

  • my dad was the snare and my uncle is the 1st cymblos

  • haha I like this vid

  • lol look at the way that they're marking time!!!!

and also in the beggining the way he counted off. one and two and one two beedly beedly bop bop XD

  • Haaaa. one and two and beedly beedly bop bop. classic

  • @lovesdrumsalot Imagine hank hill saying that lol

  • this is cool

  • This was the bomb!

I remember this from the early 80's while in High School...

Saw this exact same drumline in L.A. at CSU Los Angeles when Sprit of Atlanta and Crossmen, VK, Kingsmen, and WEST COAST EXPRESS along with BD and Freelancers played a great show.

  • thank you, I didn't know that. that makes sense though. but I agree, everything they play is just so clean!

  • thats the bass candence.omg

  • Thanks for posting this! I remember watching this as a kid in high school back in the early 80s. I think these were put out by McCormicks back then and SCV with Rob Carson and Fred Sanford were the sh*t!

  • damn that paradiddle/drags thing on tenors is sick. They're ridiculously high though, I don't know how they dealt with it.

  • They dealt with it because the were told too and they knew they were going to be in a bad ass drumline and they were getting to work with one of the best teachers in DCI at the time.

  • well I dunno if it was because they were told too, or just because that's how tradition had it. My dad's drumline back in his highschool days had their quads at the same height too. The tenors are really clean though.

  • @GreenCowboy

Fred Sanford was a master teacher. SCV drum lines always smoked under his guidence.

  • haha I knew someone would try to school me for that comment. that's pretty much exactly how our section leader/drumline head acts. funny how everyone hates her...

  • @PeanutButterGorilla They dealt with it because they did not know any better and because people is drum corps tend just do what they are told without thought or hesitation and if they do think its hey lets get this done because if the staff is asking us to do this it will obviously make us better

  • i love home timeless those remo pinestripes are on tenors. =]

  • haha those tenors

  • hell yeah! you will never find hottness like this in any WGI or DCI drumline today. this is pure badass drumming ladies and gentlemen.

  • trios are so badass!

  • I remember watching this video when I was in high school. Back then I tried to get our cymbals to do those visuals. Needless to say, it didn't go so well!

  • what is being used to muffle the drums?

  • almost 30 years ago and this still is great!

  • I had the opportunity to be Fred's Judges assistant in 1995/1996, what a great guy he was. Wish he was still around today.

  • The Man. RIP Fred. You are dearly missed by all who were able to witness your talent and teaching prowess.

  • outstanding teacher!!! the parts for the bass drums sound like their bass cadence they use today. well a section of it anyway

  • Those trios sound cool.

  • what a great instructor. what a line. great!

  • Fred Sanford came out to teach the "all-star" drumline my sophomore year of high school (1987). I had no idea who he was, but I thought it was hilarious how he be-bopped all the rhythms when he sang them to us.

I wish I had known then who he was, I would have taken it in a lot more.

  • Love them trips! We marched the same drums, they don't come in those monster sizes anymore! This was my all time favorite solo! Loved it in '79 with the break in the middle!! So very clean while they came back up to tempo!!! Just about wet myself at Greely Colorado watching the tenors from the sideline.

  • I though it was best when played in 1987. I believe tempos were much higher then and still very clean.

  • This is actually the '78 line. Reminds me a lot of those long summer days in Santa Clara. I remember Fred well, he was a great guy. I got to know a lot of these guys in '79-'80.

  • At 3:27 is a classic shot of Greg Dilley, who unfortunately passed away on June 12, 2008 in a diving accident. Greg was a legendary SCV snare (78-80) and will be greatly missed.

  • You just crushed me! I didn't hear about Greg. We were close by then.

  • Lezghinka! One of my favorite drum features of all time. Long live Fred Sanford!

  • Word. . One of my Favorites as well. . .

  • Awesome. I didn't realize that SCV 1987 was a tribute to that show. Great stuff.

  • @bguertner Lezghinka was played in '78 and '79.

  • Thank you! I used to watch this video once a day for a year. Where is Rob's solo? Nice job (I miss Fred).

    -Will

  • Someone will be sending me the complete collection soon. I only had part 2. I will put the rest up soon.

  • You are the greatest. By the way you don't have the 74' first marching percussion do you? That's what got me started. I marched SCV 80' and 81'.

  • Not at the moment but I will keep my eyes peeled.

  • LOVE the marching vibe closeup at 4:44...one of my favorite old-school percussion solos EVER!!!

I had the SAME "Santa Clara" baseball shirt my senior year in high-school...three of us took our Senior Panoramic Portrait wearing that shirt...

    Ahhh, the memories....

  • I think this series of video includes a stick control

part by Rob Carson. That was charming.

We, the old school guys from Japan watched and rewinded them again and again.

The one entitled The Melodic Percussion is also worth

    watching.

  • Awesome! I'm trying to get my hands on the series. . .A little hard to come by these days.

  • i got em

  • Dang, old School TENORS...o.o

  • It's funny how a lot of these kids looks a lot like the kids today . . . same style shirts, except a bit tighter now. the fro's and side-fringes are popular now again. Heh. Amazing video.

  • Stone Ground 7 makes me smile.

  • Kent Cater on bass #2!!!!!!!!!!

  • YEAH!!!

  • THAT my friends is bad ass. RIP Fred Sanford

    ~"D"

  • Ah man, the memories....

  • RIP Fred. You are missed.

  • ya quads! i mean tris!

  • A wonderful slice of oldschool...those drums are amazing.
