  • Mayeb it is just me, but I think the ENGL model sounds better on the Pod, but the Recto model sounds better on the AxeFX.

  • i actually prefer the pod to the axe fx. the HD is the best thing that line 6 has come out with EVER. dont judge line by the stock sounds cause they are crap, all it takes is a little tweaking. definitely worth the extra time then spending twice as much money

  • Guess im just old fashion but I'll stick with my mesa dual rec. i just love the good ol power tube tone.

  • Sorry but the sound of Pod is better!

  • Ola! ...the fuck did you forget to highpass the treadplate amp sim from the pod hd at 03:00?! :D

i guess that is just lineSHIT... erm.. line6 i mean.

    /rant off :D!

  • Thumbs up if you noticed the funny patch names!!! :D

  • Better to get a $1300 guitar and a $700 POD.

  • they both sound good but ya know Fuck i want a real tube amp

  • Blind test, you won't be able to hear a difference. If I can't hear anything majorly different about 2 samples through headphones or laptop speakers (i.e. what most people will listen to your mixes through) then the differences are irrelevant. Axe-Fx certainly has its uses and I do like them, but unless you have the money to throw around, why bother when you can get just as good results? Its all about how you use your tools.

  • `I actually love them both so much I bought each one haha.

  • Both awesome units... but axe fx dont justify his huge price ....

  • the hd pro has more mids but the axe fx has more clarity. both gadgets are great and definitely go well with each other in a mix :D

  • Is it me or does the AxeFx just sound extremely thin?

  • The Axe Fx certainly seems to be a bit crisper sounding as if there was a msall bit of presence added in on top but i cant tell if thats done purposley or i just havnt a clue what im talking about :P

  • Must say, POD sounds better to me, but they are similar

  • Metal tones take your pic. Try comparing with a Blackface preset, youll pick the Axe every time. Its clearly ahead.

  • I want tabs for that riff! T_T

  • Axe fx wins but not by miles. If you are strictly a metal player I would have to suggest the pod. Due to price differance. However, If you have the coin, do yourself a favor and buy an axe fx. I did, and I haven't looked back since. My pod is collecting dust :)

  • noise is noise using any unit caompare using a clean setting

  • @afterthefox7 it's a comparision of the metal sounds. not everyone has the main focus on clean sounds.

  • @givemeajackson And thats ashame!! tsk tsk tsk. Not everyone plays distortion either.

  • @afterthefox7 what do you expect on a video called axe fx 2 vs pod hd pro - metal?

  • honestly both sound amazing..

  • The main question this raises is why the hell Line 6 modeled the Fireball instead of the Power(Energy) Ball. Wtf.

  • 0:12.. the riff. jizz.

  • @Aristowi pod is around 600 ax fx is around 1800 I believe, and he uses superior drummer

  • What's the price of these devices? And does anyone know what does he use to make the drum tracks? Or are they real drums? :P Thanks.

  • I think the Axe FX has more headroom, but the only time that's necessary is live performance. Overall i'd probably buy the HD PRO instead.

  • I don't know. Axe Fx sounds thin but Pod HD sounds boomy.

  • This is a GREAT video... Props to you man!

  • in this video, they are equal though i like the POD better here.

    in reality:

I play the POD for months now and today, a friend came over with his axeFX ultra (not even 2) and destroyed it completely. but at the end it all depends on the producer. I can get very good mixing results with my HD. thanks for posting.

  • Yeah they both sound awesome, i think its just a matter of taste but at a fraction of the price i'd be tempted to go with the pod HD pro!

  • Both sound great but the AxeFx sounds more real to me

  • OLA RECTUM PROBE FTW !!!!!

  • Axe FX, no-

    brainer for me

  • considering the HD Pro is 1/3 the price of the AxeFxII I'm surprised it sounds as good as it does but without a budget I'd go for the Axe any day

  • Honestly, the Axe-Fx does sound better, and it's pretty noticeable, but holy shit, I never expected the Line 6 to actually sound that good.

  • @TsReDLiNe I think the line 6 kills the Axe personally, and I don't own either of them! D;

  • @TsReDLiNe I, too don't think the Axe-Fx sound any better. On another note, I never liked its kinda artificial attack either, and it sounds like it's recorded inside a plastic box x)

  • @masterd000 plastic box, that was the description i was looking for!

  • The POD sounds a little dull in the highs, and the Axe sounds a bit thin in the lows. If the two were to breed and have a baby, I'd bet it would be a magnificently brutal sounding baby. :)

  • Every time there was a switch from the Axe FX II to the Pod HD, it sounded like someone threw a blanket over an amp. The Axe FX 2 clearly has a more detailed sound. I was thinking of cutting corners and getting an HD but not a chance. The HD is still a good unit, but the Axe Fx 2 sounds much better to me.

  • Pod hd has more low mids which some people may think is muddy, but if you hi pass filter between 50hz and 100hz and boost a couple dbs in between 5 and 8 khz it would sound a little closer to the axe fx. However some people may like a thicker tone and think the axe fx is to thin and bright. It's always better to cut than boost so it's seems like the pod would make more sense for a lot of people, not to mention the huge price difference. Or you could just buy revalver mkIii.V

  • Ola, what is the best poweramp in your opinion?

  • What is the song that is played at 2min04 ? :p

  • I want both. But clearly the Ax2 is colored with a simulation of a neve preamp at its output which is adding that glue to the 5k range. The HD is beefy, but I think the Ax2 needs to have its low mids boosted to compare lows more accurately. This is an improvement for Line 6. But I still need the Axe 2 for that top end air and also the ability to do the in depth tweaks to the virtual amp component modifications. And also for it's Eventide-quality effects. Both of these are worth the money.

  • The Axe FxII has a much more open sound. Plus the II really responds to how everybody programs it and sounds different with different guitars and stuff. The Axe Fx II is revolutionary the Pod HD Pro is pretty neat.

  • @fearedse which do you think is better??

  • Comment removed

  • cool thing bout the axe: you can turn up the value for selling...

  • I totally like the POD more. Either one could definitely be tweaked to sound incredible, but the Line 6 sounds more full to me the way you have them set up.

  • is this your song? Sick song

  • Can you make it go straight to a PA? because if you can, and it's a simulator like the Fractal, then this is a serious good investment if you don't got the kind of dough, then just save up for the Fractal.

  • @Jamsessionroom1337 Yes you can go straight through the mixer.

  • is the riff played during ola handjob patch from a certain song or just shredding?

  • POD PRO HD WINS!!! THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER SAY THAT BUT I DID AND I MEAN IT!!!!

  • Ola Rectum probe patch.. LOL

  • Comment removed

  • Folks, for metal, they appear close but switching over to mellow tones of a Blackface for example, there is no comparison. Axe is miles ahead.

  • The only reason pods have a bad reputation is because people compare them to a device that costs 5 times as much and expect the pod to be objectively better. I never owned an axe-fx, but trust me i spent many hours tweaking pod patches and even the X3 is capable of pretty much ANY sound you want, it just takes time to learn how to do it. Line6 has awful stock presets especially for metal, and too many people dismiss pods after 5 minutes of tweaking

  • @Piledriver87 tweaking for 8 years now with line6 and i dont think that you can nail every tone with it. maybe for beginner`s ears and on some cheap logitech system tones may sound alike but won`t translate on other systems and the pod just cannot do what the axe fx can.

plus i don`t see the point of tweaking a tone excessively with 10 different eq`s. line6 is every audio engineer`s nightmare if you ask me.

the pod hd is MILES better than all other line6 crap but still isn`t up with fractal!

  • great video bro, i love my pod hd pro. i use it live all the time wit a frfr powered wedge and it sounds amazing!

  • i wonder how it would sound if they were combined...

  • I'd love to hear these patches with bass. I have a feeling the AxeFx would pull ahead by a good margin once in a mix.

  • Liked both but the Axe-Fx seemed to be a BIT clearer and punchier. More for death metal. The line 6 had a bit more compression and was a bit brighter. Probably better for djent. So my tonal preference goes to the Axe-Fx but I'd be more then happy to play the Pod HD Pro.

  • I like your handjob patch Ola hahaha

  • @pppatrickwww might as well save up the extra $200 and get the HD Pro, you won't reget it!

  • Oh Vildhjarta are fags too because their new album is all HD500.

  • Lets see... If Line 6 is for fags then I guess Bulb is a fag, Tosin is a fag, Acle is a fag, Keith Merrow is a fag, Paul Ortiz is a fag, etc. Go thall with your Axe FX and leave us alone.

  • Damn u Line6...got better now...this is a message for Fractal Audio..maybe in next 2 years Line6 will overcome Fractal Audio with cheaper prices...

  • great man !!, both sounds amazing but i have just a little POD X3 :C wich is cool but this POD is MF.amazing!!

  • love the patch names ola!

  • @Xaederaz AFAIK that feature has been requested from Line6 by *a lot* of people ever since the Pod HD series were released. I'm still keeping fingers crossed for that.

  • Ok, I covered my eyes from the video, and decided which sound I liked better. I really like the POD. Surprise surprise! I know the axe fx is amazing but hell, for the money, that POD HD is not too shabby at all. In this, it seemed the Fractal has too much high end fizz, and the POD sounded darker, which I do like. I know we'll all make our own judgment here so it's all good. :D Cheers all and thanks for the comparison Ola.

  • Ola, you should do a comparison between these two by turning off both of their cab sims and using the same IR in the DAW for both units :) Right now it's (unfortunately) bloody obvious that the cab sims are, again, the weak link in Pod HD series, sounds like someone threw a blanket over the speaker or smth.

The hypothesis is that once Line6 would allow user IR's in the units, the Pod HD would be the closest thing to a true "Axe-killer" :)

  • @rokipeer User IR's in the Pod HD units... Now That would be sweet. They seem to have the technology there already, right? Would it really be that hard to implement in the next firmware or something?

  • Woohoo, buying one of these tomorrow!! Was saving up for an axe fx but I like the line 6 enough that I decided not to bother with the Axe FX!

  • Whenever it switches, it sounds really different but I adjust to it and end up liking it. Then it switches again and this repeats >.>

I think the Axe sounds better overall, but either one could be tweaked to sound fantastic.

  • @FiestyMclovin I have the same experience lol, and I agree, they both can sound really good. I just bought a pod hd pro, I love the axe but I was interested in saving almost as much money as I spent on my truck haha.

  • @PPPatrickWWW Good call, I'm probably going for the HD500 myself. I've always dreamed of owning all this amazing gear, but how anyone affords this shit is beyond me xD

It's been said here before, but I think the two should be compared using the same cab impulse, or better yet a mic'd poweramp+cab setup. The pod would probably put up a hell of a fight.

  • @FiestyMclovin Hey Guys, I MAY be wrong however, The fact that we are comparing a $700.00 Pod HD to a $2,200.00 plus Fractal FX II and that MANY people find them to be comparable for that matter says a LOT about two things,,,The quality of the Line 6 for one and the COST of the Fractal for another.

  • For the average user, POD HD. For professional users, Axe FX. The pod is good but has a really bad static frequency that CANNOT be filtered. Believe me, ive tried. Its evident here when he solos them out. If you have the money, buy an axe fx. Mines on the way right now. Oh and do not buy a toneport and pod farm unless you love headaches. opinions opinions opinions opinions....

  • @TriviumCrusader17 What do you mean about your comment with the podfarm/tone port and the headphones? :)

  • the Axe-FX's cost is just ridiculous compared to the Pod, for something that going by this video, isn't really any better. if anything, the Axe sounds very thin and weak here. If money was no option, i'd probably have an Axe-FX over the Pod, but considering most of us haven't got money to waste, the Pod is such a better deal.

  • Crunchy knäkkebröd sound from the axe fx. Very nice.

  • The POD HD PRO flat out SMOKES the AXE FX II in this vid. The AXE is now off my radar and I'm going straight out to buy an HD PRO.

  • I think here the pod sounds better... I read somewhere on the net I do not remember where , that pod hd are axe fx clone... Maybe I find the site and I will upload it...

  • In this video, I like the POD more, but the best tone overall for me was the Axe's Recto sound around 1:55.

  • I did a blind test and changed my tab whenever I really liked the sound and turns out I like the pod more. But I guess I'd have to hear them side by side for real, because YouTube adds compression and such.

  • @PuR1fy

by the way, they reflect the same degradation

  • @stillrage Yes, but you HAVE to hear them live before you judge, imo. :)

  • @PuR1fy

yes, even if in a live situation, many other factors can influence the sound.

  • @stillrage I know, but you can test them in the setup you own and then choose. :)

  • 3:04 is the best tone to me

  • @tsunami2011 By itself it sounds really good but I think that in the mix the Axe might sound a bit better, with the bass and the drums etc.. You don't quite need all that bass that the line 6 has, you need the clarity.

  • best tone is the line 6 engl

  • Line 6 Pod sound more syntetic but both are amazing :D!:....

  • Axe is the one)))

    Hello from Ukraine)))

  • not meant to troll but the fractal sounds still more full and wide than the line 6

  • Dude, come on! I knoooooww the Axe2 is capable of much better Engl and Recto tones than that!! You should post another if you get a chance to explore the unit a bit more.

PS: I love all your amp videos and website and shit! Cheers!

  • Wow, I did not expect that I once would like the Line 6 stuff more than the Axe Fx...seems they did their homework

  • Rectum frier!!!

  • could you please do a reamp of these riffs with the same patches, but use the same cab impulse?

i know that line 6 has had its biggest problems with those for the span of their entire career, so it would be good to see how the amp sims themselves compare.

  • Handjob ? WTF xD ?

  • Ola which unin do you like more personally?

  • Top Video ! Naja, egal. Danke feardse ! :)

  • Line6 recto fails. The axe has more depth and note separation. I have the Axe2 its miles ahead

  • just got back home and listened to this again through my studio monitors, I take back what I said about the line 6 pod hd being better than the axe fx2

  • Gotta say, I like the POD better.

  • whats the treadplate amp sim?

  • @bruno8ibz Mesa Dual Rec, they call it that because of the diamond plate on the front panel. :)

  • @bruno8ibz Mesa boogie dual rectifier (line 6's) model

  • makes me want to buy both of them now!!! wich one should i get???

  • It seems to me like Axe Fx sounds a lot more "fuller" than the Line 6 POD.

  • love the tone bro! dunno bout gettin a handjob but...

  • Both sound great, but what about the clarity of the sound?...I can hear the riffs way better when they're played through the axe-fx 2, when played through the pod i think they get muddy, waaaay to muddy for me and that's why I think there's a 1600€ difference in price

  • @NacekO At first listen the POD HD Pro sounds like it fills more sonic space, but the articulation is SO much cleaner with the Axe FX. I believe different impulse settings would help what I call the "SM57 on the cone" effect.

I still use my POD Pro with no cabinet model on "Live" mode, then I loop that through my Waves GTR plugin, bypassing the amp model and only using their cabinet and microphone models. I would venture to say it would take second place here, Axe FX 2 taking the lead.

  • gotta say i like the ola handjob on the hd the best

  • @seamonkey18 I've emailed to get put on the list on November 13. Got a confirmation email about a week after with a little apology since fractal is backed up. I'm tempted to buy one off of Ebay or something, but if for some reason I despise it and want to return it, I need to wait for fractal audio to email me back so I have that security precaution.

  • I think the Ola Rectum Probe patch sounds the best.

  • is it just me, or do the patches have WAY less gain on the download compared to the vid. Eh, nothing a little adjustment cant fix. Still on the waiting list for my Axe fx II :(

  • @Sethsilva13 About how long have you been on the list? Just curious.

  • @Sethsilva13 It could be the patches don't sound as heavy because it sounds like he's layered the guitar tracks. If you record a track and then replay it 2 or 3 times in the mix, it'll sound a lot more dense than the original track.

  • @Sethsilva13 Hey man. I noticed his presets lacking serious gain on a previous video, but this was due to his use of a external impulse. According to the description, he uses the built in impulse on both units here. But I guess there must be something else being added.

  • @Sethsilva13 you just have lower output pickups than what he used on this video

  • @aldricsuan I was using a Dimebucker. Does the Distortion really have that much more output to it?

  • @Sethsilva13 in that case, I don't know why

  • I have to agree with seaw4rior! I can't hear that much difference

  • Considering the nearly 2 THOUSAND bucks price difference,, I'd say the POD HD Pro wins.

It still a shame that you can't upload custom Cab Impulse in it... Only minus point ;)

  • Hello There! Can you tell me what kind of tunings and strings gauges do you use for your videos?, I really want to know :)

  • eleven rack next por favor!

  • i watched this in 360p and i wasn't missing full hd. i'm too oldschool for 1080p.... and i'm 20...

  • Another riff stuck in my head

  • you gotta check out the kemper profiling amp and get your hands on one! i really wanna now what thats all about!

  • dude can you tell me why i cant hear difference between 480p and 1080? in ur older videos the sound difference is fucking huge.

  • @Guitar1sti For the answer my friend, we must turn to the black arts. I cannot give you a reason as to why, but there are dark forces at hand. It is up to you and you alone to find the reason. May the Gods be with you.

  • Impulses make a huge difference Ola i think in terms of quality they sound pretty similar to each other. I think if you slapped a better impulse on the pod it would be even closer. The Pod doesn't sound bad at all it just has a little more low end to the tone that probably comes from the cab simulation. If Line 6 let us load our own impulses into the unit i think that would be such a monumental step. Also in terms of price range I think the pod does a good job holding up. Both units are great.

  • And the Axe FX II WIns!

  • Thanks for the vid Ola. It confirms my own tests. Both devices are excellent, and choice remains to thr whole track mix imho. I like pod very much because it isnt fuzzy like the axe for simple mix. But axe is perfect because it leaves eq range for bass and drums. I was wondering if i should sell one or the other. Seems i ll keep both.

  • Thank you so much Ola, I've been waiting for someone to make this video! On the isolated guitar tracks it sounds as though there's a weird high frequency noise on the line 6 models. More so on the treadplate model. Still sounds great in the mix though!

  • I've listen to the sound of a dual rectifier and I must say the Axe FX2 comes closer to the rectifier sound then the line 6 pod HD pro, but it isn't really that worth the money, though the Axe FX2 is awesome but not really worth the money

  • i watched this in 1079 p :)

  • @jaredbroider it's 1p worse than 1080p :(

  • @fearedse I know man i could totally tell the difference!

  • @jaredbroider The saddest of all p's.

  • almost no difference :D... cool review man! rock en roll!!! God bless

  • ola are you using an sm57 replica on the axe fx???

  • I actually liked the POD sound more. It was a little bit more hid than Axe, but IMO much more chunky and brutal. Great playing Ola ;)

  • Axe has more punch and probably cuts through the mix better, but the line 6 sounds fucking awesome as well.

  • You must work for line 6

  • @1rtmkookoo no Line 6 works for me...

  • @fearedse ouhhh

  • @fearedse for less than a quarter of the price of the axeFX, line 6 is definitely doing it for me

  • With the pod sounding this good, it's impossible for me to justify paying $2,000 more for an axe fx II.

  • It's no mystery that Ola is a tweeker when it comes to this type of equipment, but from personally owning the Axe-Fx ll I can tell you right now I that the Energyball preset he uses can have ASS loads more body and bottom to it. Just changing the room/level/mic-type of the speakers and using the smallest amount of Parametric EQing would rape the living shit out of these sounds. But consider also... this is HIS sound and what he likes so he's going to lean towards it. BTW the POD sounds brutal!!

  • @LegionDe75 True but ass loads more bottom end on a guitar makes for a shitty mix. Leave the bottom end to the drums and bass.

  • @ezurcher1976 Would work if you play something like jazz, blues or even general rock. But for heavier music the guitar needs that low end.

  • @Karinmakoto Not entirely. Take Messhugah for example, (spelled wrong probably, sorry about that), they're mixes are FANTASTIC but you'll notice that guitars aren't pumping out a ton of bass and that's exactly WHY those mixes sound good. I do agree, you need a little bit of low end IN THE RIGHT FREQUENCY or the guitars just sound thin, but even in heavy music, if your guitars are too bottom heavy, your mix sounds horrible. In all, the bass end belongs to the drums and bass guitar

  • @ezurcher1976 Everyone has their opinions on guitar and what it should sound like

  • @Karinmakoto That is true. I wasn't trying to be argumentative. But I do speak from a professional stand point. Cheers

  • I'm really surprised and impressed by the pod'

  • Lol Setting. Handjob.

  • The Axe sounds more realistic, the ENGL part is still close with the POD, the MESA part not so much but so is the price. I guess if you are a hobby musician the POD must be your choise.

  • @oikonomp Ola likes the POD, he's hardly a hobby musician. TSO used POD in their live shows, and they sounded fantastic. Just gotta know how to tweak them. Axe FX is amazing though for sure.

  • You sure make some tasty riffs :D To be completely honest, the Line 6 sound very good here. The Axe-fx is like a 10 out of 10 (for +$2,000) and the Line 6 is a 8.5-10 (for +$500). No brainier for my empty wallet.

  • I love my Pod Pro! It gets the job done and at a great price. Im sorry Axe owners but you gotta admit, the pod is pretty much there. I still think the axe is sicl though! but i will lol at all the butt hurt axe owners still dissing the pod! Ola your the man!

  • i think the pod might be better sounding. And what a price difference
