  • Once again...the report does reflect a naivette were the content of graphic novels are concerned. It's the old "comics are only for kids" mindset that many within the industry have been fighting to change for the last couple decades.

But old habits die hard, as they say. At the turn of the 20th century prose fictional novels were looked at as nothing more than a poor man's form of entertainment, not suitable for serious literary consideration. Same thing went for Sci-Fi back in the 50's.

  • "Some contain explicit content"

No shit, sherlock. So do most "regular" novels today.

Watchmen received the prestigious Hugo award and was awarded one of the top 100 novels in Time magazine.

Most regular novels/books can`t say that.

  • As I've commented previously, Aginor27, it's a testament to the ingorance most of the mainstream media has in regards to the industry. The same kind of thing erks me, when almost any newspaper or magazine does an article on comics, manga or Graphic novels and has something like "Pow, Bam or Wham" in the headline.

  • It irks me that it says Graphic Novels and then immediately cuts to Manga.

    To each his own.

  • OH YOUR GOD!!!

  • While we obviously had no say about the finished content of this report, it's clear that the station's knowledge of the genre is a bit myopic.

But they did do an accurate job reporting on our books while addressing some very real fears some parents have with the format.

  • Thanks for posting this clip. Too bad ABC's report is horribly misleading about the GN genre as a whole. Mysticism and pornography? Sure, there is some, but so much wonderful storytelling in the biographical , historical, fantasy and humor as well -- just like chapter books, film, and most other artistic media. I'm reminded of the biased descriptions that Wertham and others in the 40s and 50s made about comics, ignoring the many artistic and literary merits of early comics. Do your homework ABC!
