It is either the gears as you said, or the noise of air going into the intake and individual throttle bodies. That bmw v12 makes a very mechanical sound. The Ferrari f40 is a v8 twin turbo however.

They did... in the 80s. The original BMW M1. But I must say that it was made due to a joint effort with Lamborghini until they were forced to leave the project due to one of their many economic struggles. It wasn't exactly a success on showrooms or the track, but man is it awesome!!

Also, Veyron is by no means overrated - it is an incredible car for its class. How else could Volkswagen be making a loss on a car that costs 2.5 million? The amount of workmanship and engineering that went into manufacturing the Veyron is exceptional - we will probably never see the likes of it again.
