I disagree, i love this game. The combat is just like Daggerfall and the mouse controls took about 10 minutes to get used to. I haven't played as a magick character yet but my Dark Elf Ranger is doing just fine. To find things all you need to is talk to the people in town. My only problem with the map is you can't scroll. I'd give this game an 8/10 and i haven't ever played a game that deserves a 10. Btw i didnt know you could move with the arrows i'll have to try that and see how i like it
This game is awful, the controls are shit, enemies appear behind you, enemies can hit you through walls, the first dungeon is too harsh, no rebindable controls, etc.
@jtgtjtgt I know, I just wish the controls were rebindable and the sword swinging was more like daggerfall, which is like arena but if you enable mouselook it's pretty solid.
I apreciate it, it's certainly bloodier than daggerfall... alot...
It's got an early screen shake effect for when you're getting raped by rats so that's something. I was able to look past it, but honestly.. Please make a rebindable key mod, and a mouse look mod... it's difficult to control.
@AdamX21198, I like the controls, sure some control keys are difficult to reach during a combat fight. As for hitting you through walls that's the kind of stuff you get for playing a early 90's video game, you can expect anything better because the technology of gaming was shitty compared to today. First dungeon is flawed but still not that bad when you complete it.
THANK YOU for telling how horrible the control is. I also died in the first few seconds of being in the city; how was I supposed to know a guard would kill me without being provoked?!
Arena is also noticeably different from the later installments in that it's almost a pure dungeon crawler (the towns are there for repairs and selling loot). Daggerfall introduces more quests and the faction system (Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, Fighters Guild).
I managed to get it running on Windows ME, but it didn't have any sound and didn't run very well. It's really a DOS program and should be treated as such.
@DWTerminator Oh, reason I asked is because I did download DOSBOX, but when I tried to enter the CD/ARENA command into the prompt it said it was invalid.
@DWTerminator Thank you for putting that video up, I know how to run the program in the emulator now, but the problem is that it says it cannot find the Arena file, I extracted the files from the zipped folder but when I try to install it from the command prompt it says that the file is not a valid path. I even entered C:CD/ARENA like the instructions told me to but it still won't work.
@DWTerminator Alright, I downloaded the zip folder from the Elder Scrolls website, then I extracted the files, then I downloaded Dosbox, then I typed mount c C:\doxgames\arena, then pressed enter (in the Doxbox). But it didn't start the installation process.
This will bring you to the setup program. Use the default sound configs, but feel free to change the chipset itself (Sound Blaster, Roland, etc.) until you find something that works/is to your liking.
Then when you've saved and exited the setup program, enter this:
@DWTerminator Hey I got Arena working, thank you so much for helping me. I am subscribing because you took time out of your schedule to help me with this and I really appreciate it, not many people have the decency to do that.
I do have one question though. The game itself is laggy and I am wondering how I can get it to the speed your playing it in.
No problem. As for the speed issues, increase your cycles to 15000 or so. You can either do this via the config file or just hitting Ctrl+F12 until you get to the desired # of cycles.
wow! Weird seeing the start of this great saga... If it's free, I'll check it out right now! ( Started with Morrowind. Need to check Daggerfall sometime...)
Personally, I found the combat in Arena and Daggerfall to be rather clunky but honestly I think that Arena is a very good game and deserves much praise. Also, Skyrim is awesome and I'm very tired of reading these anti-skyrim rants, its a very good game and it drew a lot of people to the Elder Scrolls series.

This is fucking awesome for when it was made. How can you possibly give this game shit in the review? To review this game on the basis that it dosent run like obliv/sky is really weak imo.
@YorkDevil85 Amen, even I used to get my ass kicked in the first Dungeon but once I got out, this was actually quite a lot of fun. You just need to temper your standards accordingly. I also think Arena beats Daggerfall hands down.
That hack and slash mouse system is actually an amazing concept. Seems much more fun and involved than simply smashing buttons. Kind of like the concept behind a Wii but not designed for 8 year olds.
It's a cool concept that they really need to get back to. Morrowind's combat was just awful and Oblivion/Skyrim's is just boring ("tap buttons repeatedly, kill everything"). I can see that being hard to implement in a modern game though. Dead Island tried something similar and it didn't seem to work out so well.
I suppose next you'll tell me Playstation 3 was the first video game console, Modern Warfare 3 is the first Call of Duty game, and the United States existed before the British Empire.
@vlogmasters520 actually it wasn't lol..i love elderscrolls but even at the time when this game was first released it was awful and received many negative reviews...also there were a lot more rpg's out there that where more bleeding edge than this.
I've played all of the Elder Scrolls games, but I have never ever completed this game. I have started a new character, a high elf, on Arena (whom I will use on all games) - I have vowed that I will not do another TES game until I completed Arena ;)
you know whats ironic is half of the commenters have only played oblivion and skyrim and never played any other elder scrolls and yet they critize an old great game
@hauns523 I started from Oblivon and don't hate any of the old games i have always been on playstation after sega so i couldn't play any Elder Scrolls until Oblivion, most people who started on Skyrim seem to be Fallout 3 fans.
@hauns523 Hey I never played any other elder scrolls other than the two you mentioned :3 I was a console gamer and so yeah, but I've heard a lot about morrowind, whats your take on morrowind?
I love PC gamer hipsters, who claim because something is old and original that its better. I started on TES: Oblivion, and fell in love. While I waited for Skyrim, I tried playing Morrowind...I nearly died of bordem. I mean, general movement drains your stamina bar, the mountains basically make you walk from A to B with no feeling of exploration! However, the worst thing about the game for me, was how amazingly SLOW it was.Things had fossilized by the time you get to the first town in the game!
Apparently you've never tried to run or swing a sword, nor have you played an actual RPG. I'll give you that Morrowind's slow (as most RPG's are), but Oblivion's downright pathetic once you get any deeper than first impressions.
@DWTerminator You can't compare 1 aspect of a fantasy RPG to real life unless you're willing to compare ALL aspect's of it to real life. Its a video game. WALKING in a video game should not drain a necessary combat resource. Also, I'v played many MANY RPG's, and not one had walking tire out the hero....Unless you're playing that one RPG where the protagonist is a power walking, asthmatic, 70 year old with a bad hip.
Im actually curious, what you mean by get deeper than first impressions?
@DWTerminator Oblivion is downright pathetic. I see. Back in 2008 you gave it 3.5/5. That means it is good. You enjoyed it. You can't deny that back in 2008, you must have enjoyed it to give it that score. Given that you mentioned the guilds, you must have put a lot of time into it and explored most of it. Now it has 2/5 because of some EXTRA features (other races) you don't like and things that, as you acknowledged, can be "fixed" by mods. Difficulty wasn't hated in the first review *continued*
@DWTerminator You say 2/5 means a game should be avoided, despite you investing many hours into it. Your score change's justification is baseless. You agreed mods can fix most problems. These mods can be installed very quickly. Here's the thing though. Most gamers aren't as anal as you. I know only one D&D/Warhammer/"real" RPG player who has played TES. Unlike everyone else he dislikes Oblivion and Skyrim for trivial reasons. I am not surprised. Face it. You are a hipster and an anticonformist.
I've been playing RPG's since the late 90's, just FYI. I wasn't even able to play Oblivion when it came out, and I factored mods into the score with that old review (which was back when I was still learning the ropes of reviewing). By itself, Oblivion is a 2/5. Mods make it worth playing and would bring it up to a 3.5. Understand my rationale here?
Also, if I were an anticonformist, I wouldn't like any popular games, which is quite simply not the case. Face it: you're a butthurt fanboy.
@DWTerminator Not really. I never completed any of the Oblivion guild quests (collectively) or even the main story. Same for Morrowind, and as for Skyrim, whilst an enjoyable game it can get very monotonous as far as environment variety goes and I haven't played it for nearly a week. (Although you've got to expect repetition for a world of that scale.)
Many people bash sequels for being different. "Fallout 3/NV sucks", or "the new X-COM will be terrible", often without even playing the sequel.
You were coming across as a butthurt fanboy, whether you meant to or not. Might want to watch that in the future.
Anyway, the new X-COM is almost nothing at all like the original series (apart from "humans vs. aliens") so it stands to reason that fans would be furious. Not everyone likes playing FPS's all the time. Same goes with Fallout 3 (has very little to do with FO1 or 2), but at least New Vegas kept enough of the older titles in there that it *felt* like a Fallout game.
A big problem I had with Oblivion is that the PC isn't really the hero of the story though I'm sure others may disagree. Of course when you have to compete with Boromir to be the main hero...
The question at the end of the dungeon is just to verify you actually bought the game. The answer's in the manual. About the difficulty - it's really not that hard. You can sleep anywhere almost (there are benches everywhere in the first dungeon), and I managed to complete it without a problem. It's not much harder than Daggerfall or Battlespire. And I'd say it's about as good as Daggerfall actually. Not quite, but almost.
arena and daggerfall are on the same playing field, morrowind is the best. you sucked at arena, period. don't take it out on the game because you're weak. i got used to the controls quickly and rats and goblins are no problem at level 3 even.
I'm sorry but this is just a few random opinions; no review per se. You've covered 1/1000th of the game. Also: I have the CD version; no copy protection. Plus I never died in the first dungeon. In fact, I love the first dungeon and usually spend a couple of hours to make sure I go through all of it before exiting, so I'm a few levels up. MW is like 0.01% the size of Arena. And the mouse controls are easy to get used to. That style was popular in those days (cf. UU1/2).
@DWTerminator Hello there mister DWTerminator. I downloaded this game so that it was playable and all that. But... When i went through the shift-gate through the first dungeon, the game just closed on me on went back to the DOS starting screen. Please DWTerminator! I need you help! Your my only hope!
Oh and I forgot to mention, TES (at least since Morrowind) has had a big emphasis on the mod community, and Oblivion was no different, and if I'm not mistaken many of the flaws, including the level scaling, were fixed with mods. My point is that at least Bethesda includes with the PC versions the construction set, allowing players to customize their experiences. Console gamers who can't afford good PCs are stuck with the inferior vanilla versions but TES was really meant for PC anyway.
Since Morrowind, TES hasn't been "meant for PC." Dunno where you got that idea. Bethesda at least releases proper mod tools and PC features because they know their PC players want and even demand them. I'll give them that much. Hell you can look at Skyrim's controls and EASILY see it was meant for console from the very start (the whole "dual-wield" thing just doesn't feel right on a PC, the graphics are merely average, they dumbed it down even more, etc.).
@DWTerminator I haven't played a demo for Skyrim nor have I heard of anyone playing it, so I'm not familiar with its mechanics yet. We will see. As long as it's fun, I could care less whether or not its 'meant' for consoles. Oblivion played fine of 360, but the PC version was clearly superior control wise, as I'm sure Skyrim will be (quicksave feature, etc). I think the graphics look pretty good. It's no Crysis, but considering the size of TES, it's more than adequate.
@DWTerminator Yes The Witcher is very different than PS:T, but what I meant was the circumstances your character is in and the way you develop them is pretty similar. Both Geralt and Nameless One are your only options for the protagonist. Also, both characters' narrative arc use a rather convenient story setup (amnesia) so that you can shape their internal character and moral alignment. Both games have a very blatant existentialist take on the genre in other words.
I see what you mean there. While the character may be well-established and known, it's up to the player to decide how to play said character. The amnesia bit is done very differently between them, however (PS:T is a journey of discovering oneself and so forth, while Witcher is solving a mystery and stopping an already-established nefarious plot).
@matternicuss its not money iv played games on my pc an its not even close to the visceral feel of console gameing thats why pc gaming is dying the game play is more like chess were consoles are more like pantball it realy cums down to what ud rather feel out of the 2 an what works for u but money has nothing to do with it
@kingpharaohtsar I can't imagine TES feeling like paintball. But even shooters feel better with a mouse because you have greater reaction time. To each their own though. Consoles, to me, are merely affordable and convenient. PC gaming is 'dying' because gaming is mainstream right now, and most people cannot afford a new PC every couple of years. Consoles, I hate to say it, but they appeal more or less to the least common denominator. They're more accessible, but they're also very limited.
@matternicuss whatever works for u but i dont get how ud get greater reaction time with a mouse over sumthing sat in ur hand that works all the time unlike a mouse witch doznt work well when pc gaming i just use a touch pad but that still doznt get round the keyboard witch is probly the most unvisceral thing about pc gaming an if u played tes on a console it wud feel more like paintball to over simplfy a pc is like a bikes if u cant fix 1 dont have 1 were as console are like cars every1s got 1
@kingpharaohtsar I've never had problems with my mouse. As an example, I own Morrowind on both Xbox and PC. When I first got the Xbox version, I liked Morrowind, thought it was a fine game, but could not get over the clunky interface and long and frequent load times. A couple years later I picked it up for my PC and have loved it ever since. Mods improved the game visually and the interface and design is clearly superior on PC. Two things I love about PC gaming; quicksaves and hotkeys.
@kingpharaohtsar I don't understand why you think playing on a PC is 'like chess' and consoles being akin to paintball? Money does play a role for me at least. I for one have an old PC. I cannot even play Oblivion on it. I have school fees to worry about as well as car insurance so I don't have the luxury of a new PC every other year. However, I enjoy gaming on my dusty old rig, and since I enjoy old school RPGs more than anything I'm satisfied with it.
@matternicuss play more consoles an ull get it but u probly rether chess it all cums down to the person tho just by new bits for ur old pc an put them in urself if u get board il b picking up the new starwars game on the pc looks good an money poor people have pcs too fela im not rich but abite half my cash goz on gamez lol
@kingpharaohtsar I've been playing both console and PC games since I was a kid, starting with the first ATARI and Nintendo. I am in no way new to console or PC gaming. I remember when DOOM was brand new and all the rage, and I also remember being very impressed with the 1st Star Fox's semi-polygonal graphics. But yes, preference does depend on the player, but I am comfortable with either a gamepad or a mouse.
@matternicuss lol star fox but doom will go down in history i started out on flight sims christ were old lol pads all the way simpler helps with geting into it not having to navigate a keyboard to many damn buttons for me anywayz
I had all of The Elder Scrolls, including Arena, and this is a great game, if you actually know how to play it. Stop insulting it, it's from the 90's and it's almost exactly like Daggerfall which you love so much. Give it a chance. I love this game.
I gave it several chances. It *never* got better. The most I could get out of it was that it's a highly mediocre action-RPG. Also, Daggerfall fixed almost all the issues I had with Arena, so of course I like it more.
Another thing too... Calling the controls and combat horrible? Back then there were no analog controlers, only mice and joysticks. Keep in mind, this was after Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 which defined first person rpg's. . . .
This game was legendary in its day. I remember spending lots of time of my childhood playing the great pioneers of current generation games. Such as... The Elder Scrolls, Resident Evil, Starcraft, Warcraft, Total Annihilation, Diablo 1, Ultima Online, Doom, Mechwarrior, Deux Ex...... I am 27 years old now, and I look back on these games and remember they are still great in their current installments. Games then had more soul and heart than most games today. (said games excluded)
when was this released? 1994 or something? i found it frustrating but wanted to get past all of that to see how the quests went and such. I was happy with the quests, and some of the dungeons were really cool. They do make it way too challenging at first, and it's not very fun gameplay to us these days, but my main complaint is the scale of the game and how long it takes to travel. You'll be running for like 5 minutes through the same patch of forest or grassland. but hey...not bad for its day

MrReaper5 2 months ago
I love PC gamer hipsters, who claim because something is old and original that its better. I started on TES: Oblivion, and fell in love. While I waited for Skyrim, I tried playing Morrowind...I nearly died of bordem. I mean, general movement drains your stamina bar, the mountains basically make you walk from A to B with no feeling of exploration! However, the worst thing about the game for me, was how amazingly SLOW it was.Things had fossilized by the time you get to the first town in the game!
KGJSDFGHSD 2 months ago
Apparently you've never tried to run or swing a sword, nor have you played an actual RPG. I'll give you that Morrowind's slow (as most RPG's are), but Oblivion's downright pathetic once you get any deeper than first impressions.
DWTerminator 2 months ago
@DWTerminator You can't compare 1 aspect of a fantasy RPG to real life unless you're willing to compare ALL aspect's of it to real life. Its a video game. WALKING in a video game should not drain a necessary combat resource. Also, I'v played many MANY RPG's, and not one had walking tire out the hero....Unless you're playing that one RPG where the protagonist is a power walking, asthmatic, 70 year old with a bad hip.
Im actually curious, what you mean by get deeper than first impressions?
KGJSDFGHSD 2 months ago
I know it's a game. Still, sprinting makes you tired. Need I remind you they brought that back in Skyrim?
And I really don't need to explain what I mean by deeper than first impressions here. Just watch my Oblivion review addendum.
DWTerminator 2 months ago
@DWTerminator Oblivion is downright pathetic. I see. Back in 2008 you gave it 3.5/5. That means it is good. You enjoyed it. You can't deny that back in 2008, you must have enjoyed it to give it that score. Given that you mentioned the guilds, you must have put a lot of time into it and explored most of it. Now it has 2/5 because of some EXTRA features (other races) you don't like and things that, as you acknowledged, can be "fixed" by mods. Difficulty wasn't hated in the first review *continued*
GeneStarwind09 2 months ago
@DWTerminator You say 2/5 means a game should be avoided, despite you investing many hours into it. Your score change's justification is baseless. You agreed mods can fix most problems. These mods can be installed very quickly. Here's the thing though. Most gamers aren't as anal as you. I know only one D&D/Warhammer/"real" RPG player who has played TES. Unlike everyone else he dislikes Oblivion and Skyrim for trivial reasons. I am not surprised. Face it. You are a hipster and an anticonformist.
GeneStarwind09 2 months ago
I've been playing RPG's since the late 90's, just FYI. I wasn't even able to play Oblivion when it came out, and I factored mods into the score with that old review (which was back when I was still learning the ropes of reviewing). By itself, Oblivion is a 2/5. Mods make it worth playing and would bring it up to a 3.5. Understand my rationale here?
Also, if I were an anticonformist, I wouldn't like any popular games, which is quite simply not the case. Face it: you're a butthurt fanboy.
DWTerminator 2 months ago
@DWTerminator Not really. I never completed any of the Oblivion guild quests (collectively) or even the main story. Same for Morrowind, and as for Skyrim, whilst an enjoyable game it can get very monotonous as far as environment variety goes and I haven't played it for nearly a week. (Although you've got to expect repetition for a world of that scale.)
Many people bash sequels for being different. "Fallout 3/NV sucks", or "the new X-COM will be terrible", often without even playing the sequel.
GeneStarwind09 2 months ago
You were coming across as a butthurt fanboy, whether you meant to or not. Might want to watch that in the future.
Anyway, the new X-COM is almost nothing at all like the original series (apart from "humans vs. aliens") so it stands to reason that fans would be furious. Not everyone likes playing FPS's all the time. Same goes with Fallout 3 (has very little to do with FO1 or 2), but at least New Vegas kept enough of the older titles in there that it *felt* like a Fallout game.
DWTerminator 2 months ago
A big problem I had with Oblivion is that the PC isn't really the hero of the story though I'm sure others may disagree. Of course when you have to compete with Boromir to be the main hero...

The question at the end of the dungeon is just to verify you actually bought the game. The answer's in the manual. About the difficulty - it's really not that hard. You can sleep anywhere almost (there are benches everywhere in the first dungeon), and I managed to complete it without a problem. It's not much harder than Daggerfall or Battlespire. And I'd say it's about as good as Daggerfall actually. Not quite, but almost.
SwedishBerzerker 3 months ago
arena and daggerfall are on the same playing field, morrowind is the best. you sucked at arena, period. don't take it out on the game because you're weak. i got used to the controls quickly and rats and goblins are no problem at level 3 even.
emaciation 4 months ago
I'm sorry but this is just a few random opinions; no review per se. You've covered 1/1000th of the game. Also: I have the CD version; no copy protection. Plus I never died in the first dungeon. In fact, I love the first dungeon and usually spend a couple of hours to make sure I go through all of it before exiting, so I'm a few levels up. MW is like 0.01% the size of Arena. And the mouse controls are easy to get used to. That style was popular in those days (cf. UU1/2).

GarredHATES 4 months ago
Oh and I forgot to mention, TES (at least since Morrowind) has had a big emphasis on the mod community, and Oblivion was no different, and if I'm not mistaken many of the flaws, including the level scaling, were fixed with mods. My point is that at least Bethesda includes with the PC versions the construction set, allowing players to customize their experiences. Console gamers who can't afford good PCs are stuck with the inferior vanilla versions but TES was really meant for PC anyway.
matternicuss 5 months ago
Since Morrowind, TES hasn't been "meant for PC." Dunno where you got that idea. Bethesda at least releases proper mod tools and PC features because they know their PC players want and even demand them. I'll give them that much. Hell you can look at Skyrim's controls and EASILY see it was meant for console from the very start (the whole "dual-wield" thing just doesn't feel right on a PC, the graphics are merely average, they dumbed it down even more, etc.).
DWTerminator 4 months ago
@DWTerminator I haven't played a demo for Skyrim nor have I heard of anyone playing it, so I'm not familiar with its mechanics yet. We will see. As long as it's fun, I could care less whether or not its 'meant' for consoles. Oblivion played fine of 360, but the PC version was clearly superior control wise, as I'm sure Skyrim will be (quicksave feature, etc). I think the graphics look pretty good. It's no Crysis, but considering the size of TES, it's more than adequate.
matternicuss 4 months ago
@DWTerminator Yes The Witcher is very different than PS:T, but what I meant was the circumstances your character is in and the way you develop them is pretty similar. Both Geralt and Nameless One are your only options for the protagonist. Also, both characters' narrative arc use a rather convenient story setup (amnesia) so that you can shape their internal character and moral alignment. Both games have a very blatant existentialist take on the genre in other words.
matternicuss 4 months ago
I see what you mean there. While the character may be well-established and known, it's up to the player to decide how to play said character. The amnesia bit is done very differently between them, however (PS:T is a journey of discovering oneself and so forth, while Witcher is solving a mystery and stopping an already-established nefarious plot).

@matternicuss its not money iv played games on my pc an its not even close to the visceral feel of console gameing thats why pc gaming is dying the game play is more like chess were consoles are more like pantball it realy cums down to what ud rather feel out of the 2 an what works for u but money has nothing to do with it
kingpharaohtsar 4 months ago
@kingpharaohtsar I can't imagine TES feeling like paintball. But even shooters feel better with a mouse because you have greater reaction time. To each their own though. Consoles, to me, are merely affordable and convenient. PC gaming is 'dying' because gaming is mainstream right now, and most people cannot afford a new PC every couple of years. Consoles, I hate to say it, but they appeal more or less to the least common denominator. They're more accessible, but they're also very limited.
matternicuss 4 months ago
@matternicuss whatever works for u but i dont get how ud get greater reaction time with a mouse over sumthing sat in ur hand that works all the time unlike a mouse witch doznt work well when pc gaming i just use a touch pad but that still doznt get round the keyboard witch is probly the most unvisceral thing about pc gaming an if u played tes on a console it wud feel more like paintball to over simplfy a pc is like a bikes if u cant fix 1 dont have 1 were as console are like cars every1s got 1
kingpharaohtsar 4 months ago
@kingpharaohtsar I've never had problems with my mouse. As an example, I own Morrowind on both Xbox and PC. When I first got the Xbox version, I liked Morrowind, thought it was a fine game, but could not get over the clunky interface and long and frequent load times. A couple years later I picked it up for my PC and have loved it ever since. Mods improved the game visually and the interface and design is clearly superior on PC. Two things I love about PC gaming; quicksaves and hotkeys.
matternicuss 4 months ago
@kingpharaohtsar I don't understand why you think playing on a PC is 'like chess' and consoles being akin to paintball? Money does play a role for me at least. I for one have an old PC. I cannot even play Oblivion on it. I have school fees to worry about as well as car insurance so I don't have the luxury of a new PC every other year. However, I enjoy gaming on my dusty old rig, and since I enjoy old school RPGs more than anything I'm satisfied with it.

@matternicuss play more consoles an ull get it but u probly rether chess it all cums down to the person tho just by new bits for ur old pc an put them in urself if u get board il b picking up the new starwars game on the pc looks good an money poor people have pcs too fela im not rich but abite half my cash goz on gamez lol
kingpharaohtsar 4 months ago
@kingpharaohtsar I've been playing both console and PC games since I was a kid, starting with the first ATARI and Nintendo. I am in no way new to console or PC gaming. I remember when DOOM was brand new and all the rage, and I also remember being very impressed with the 1st Star Fox's semi-polygonal graphics. But yes, preference does depend on the player, but I am comfortable with either a gamepad or a mouse.

zephrameliasfoster 5 months ago 26
I gave it several chances. It *never* got better. The most I could get out of it was that it's a highly mediocre action-RPG. Also, Daggerfall fixed almost all the issues I had with Arena, so of course I like it more.
