Agreed. Rap is shit. There is no key, or downbeat in rap-which means that it cannot be classified as music, or a form of rhythm; nevermore a type of art in any way, shape, or form.
As much as I love Kinison, this skit doesn't hold up by today's standards. Yeah, rap music on the radio or MTV is generic, awful, and completely forgettable. But we also live in a time where a lot of independent rappers not only qualify as creative writers, but some of them play instruments and produce their own music as well; case in point, El-P. I'd be surprised if any of you rock enthusiasts knew who he was. Not even Kinison would be able to deny his talent.
The difference between rap and the music styles mentioned here like jazz, blues, rock, ragtime, etc. is those forms have melody, chords, all the things that music is and can be written onto a piece of sheet music. Rap doesn't have those qualities and is therefore an artform, but more of spoken word than music. It's also cheaper to make and you don't have to pay a lot of musicians. Record labels love it.
There is always good music out there, rock, rap, blues, etc., you just have to find it. The difference is that music that is popular today and played on mainstream radio just plain sucks, while music back in the 70's, 80's and 90's that was popular and played on mainstream radio was decent/listenable. However, I have come to the conclusion that mainstream people suck anyway so listen to what you want!

The thing I've never liked about rap music is sampling. I understand, early on, why sampling was important, even necessary to the art form but one would think that after "RockBox" came out, that rap music should have started composing original music beds for the songs, even if those compositions are made by in-studio musicians and not by the hip hop artist himself. It's so frustrating that thirty years later that sampling is still so prevalent.

It isn't an art form? Hip-hop producers put out some amazing music. Namely, Timbaland, Scott storch, Nely 'El Arma Secreta', ETC. Rock however is always the same gig, drums and guitar. The Bravery do a good job at mixing a lot of musical elements to their rock which makes their music enjoyable.

The thing I've never liked about rap music is sampling. I understand, early on, why sampling was important, even necessary to the art form but one would think that after "RockBox" came out, that rap music should have started composing original music beds for the songs, even if those compositions are made by in-studio musicians and not by the hip hop artist himself. It's so frustrating that thirty years later that sampling is still so prevalent.
