very very nice, I love the way you lay back in the groove. I notice the poor impoverished music industry has removed all of the Shadows and Light clips from youtube. Shame.
I think Jaco was the whole orchestra on that video, unbelievable really.You can even see it on Pat's face, he looks over as if to say 'far out mate, you are amazing'. And Pat Metheny is no slug.
@5891jonathan That's just the way i see it you know, i must be one of the few musicians or music lovers considering Brecker as a "mere saxophonist". Composition and style-wise, Wayne's solo albums from the 60's simply redefined jazz music (not to mention his works with Miles and Weather Report or what he still does with his 4tet nowadays...saw 'em twice by the way...words can't describe)
@ChicagoBassed Thank you Sharay! :) Coming from you it means a lot, believe me!
You should check the live album/dvd "Shadows and Lights", great band, Jaco as a sideman comping amazingly. He also recorded 2 studio albums for Joni. If you cannot find them send me a PM.
And thank you so much for your videos, I've learned a lot with them. And every time i see those church videos i still get blown away aha :)
Oh dude, that ruled! I like how you got that bass line down at 00:58. Do you think that the phrase at 00:30 is a slide? Rulz again! Awesome playing! So smooth. Rad.
one of my favorite bass lines of all time, very nice job too. If I were you I'd try playing the verse on the E string instead so you can play that 4th fret harmonic on the 9th fret and you can include the A string so you get that C# in there, but thats just me. Were you using the neck pickup at all?
Don't do yourself down. This is a fantastic take on one of the best bass lines ever. You've even got the tone right down. How do you do it? I'm not a bassist, by the way - but this is just the business.
@midlander4: Thank you very much! Ok ok, i'll change the description slightly :)
You can get a similar tone by using mainly the neck pickup, and playing directly over it. And I couldn't agree more, this live version is just brilliant, played by a great band.
Was just jamming this today. One of my favorite Jaco performances. Very well done!

your playing is nice, but your bass is out of tune man..
i dont know if its the strings that are badly tuned or your frets
or maybe accidental bends, or wrong notes.. but probably there are no wrong notes cuz i remember this basslines very well!
all in all its very good

You're welcome :) Don Juan... is less known than the others albums but is awesome too (Speak to me,Walls of Jericho with Wayne Shorter)
Did you know that Wayne was supposed to be in Shadows & Lights but she couldn't have him due to records companies issues?

@Fjord76
Joni had to "settle" for Michael Brecker! Wow!
5891jonathan 11 months ago
@5891jonathan i know it's gonna sound weird but to me, Brecker is a saxophonist.Shorter is a musician.
Fjord76 11 months ago 8
@Fjord76
No, I see that distinction. Not weird at all.

Playing right on top of the frets, that's the Jaco tone. Somehow his playing fit perfectly with her songs.

Keep it alive , you've got the tone, harmonics - IMO this was the greatest band ever put together - I could listen to it forever -
Can someone put the Shadows and Light videos back up again? ...Pretty Please?...

And I forgot to say... this live DVD version is way better than the album cut that's also great - but Jaco really brings this version alive.
