Just look me up.. its out there.. Next time remember when trying to make a snide in order for it to work you have to actually say something that makes sense. Telling someone they take themselves or work seriously is not a bad thing but then again coming from some 20 something year old that probably never had to earn anything on his own that is the norm for way of self entitlement.
hope he soaked those stands in fresh water over night and then lubricated them. If not those will be a pile of crumbs in a month. Surprised her let those power cords lay in the water. Very very very dangerous. The amps that could arc out of that are seriously deadly.
@spimages LMAOF spoken like a true glossy eyed newbie to the game... Let me take total shot in the dark your all of 22 years age at the very most... New to photography less than 3 years and read every photo blog to actually working in the field.. LoL.
@rmstudio haha ! very close !! i'm infact 42 and and have been working as a professional photographer for the last 19 years,i have over 40k's worth of equipment including a hasselblad H4D, i suggest you stop wasting time telling everyone they no nothing and spend more time priming your 10$ kettle ! prick
Bomberbinz is right, that "Shutter speed will only go so far with controlling the ambient light," which is an excellent reason for having 600-1000-2000ws+ of electronic flash, several batteries or a generator/inverter, especially if you're using multiple Chimera's and (ROSCO) gels. Graduated ND's will help, too, but those may be more appropriate for film or video. See "War Horse" for some remarkable fill and great skies.
You may have possibly confused the issue. The image would be overexposed if the picture was metered for the talent. jewrabs is correct in the fact that due the sun and clear sky etc the brightness difference between the light coming from the sun and what is on the subject are very high. Meter for the overall scene and the talent would be very dark. Shutter speed will only go so far with controlling the ambient light. Remember most DSLRs ony got to 250th second for flash sync on studio stobs.
jewrabs - without the flash, the shot would be overexposed; that is, the lighting, which is essentially fill, knocks down the ambient light (daylight) which provides a DARKER background for the talent (model) illuminated by the electronic flash. Actually, the shutter speed controls the background light. The Rule: Shoot in backlight or weak sidelight, fill the shadow side of the talent and control the background with shutter speed.
From what I see, without the flashes the shot would be extremely underexposed, and since there is a deep DOF, he's shooting at a tiny Aperture to get max clarity and DOF. Are my assumptions true??
You are amazing at using lights! Question: are you using ND filters to darken the ambient light, allowing your Alienbees to overpower and work its magic?
They say there are many GOOD photographers but a GREAT photographer is one who's work you can recognise by his "style"... like Ansel Adams. Well Joel has style as sure as I have two ears!!
@simonsgl yeah the heavy lighting style is in with a lot of clients. Or whatever you want to call it. Really I think it looks dull because it's emulated by so many photographers who haven't quite developed their own "look" Not that I have a developed eye either, but I recognize a fad when I see one.
It's so amazing that you can get lighting like this at such a remote location - most people would head into studio and green screen it - you're a master!
that was really great.. can you give us some of the technical numbers!! like what was the heads power !?, Aperture, and shutter speed.. etc. !? thanks
joel, i was in the water , we were shooting a Salvador Dali parody last month. the water is nasty. my trunks are stiff as a board from the high salt content..
hi, would it be to much if you would explain further on your blog statement "For this shoot I purchased a Optima 12 volt car battery to run my Vagabond inverter. " ? thanks
lol inferiority complex
also, too much lights. way too much lights.

@capitaoinfinito As if that has anything to do with the creation of this image or the results... That is such the typical newbie question.

@khashy87 It's all lighting. When you use strobe techniques like this, this is what these shots look like straight out of camera.
