  • lol inferiority complex

also, too much lights. way too much lights.

  • Just look me up.. its out there.. Next time remember when trying to make a snide in order for it to work you have to actually say something that makes sense. Telling someone they take themselves or work seriously is not a bad thing but then again coming from some 20 something year old that probably never had to earn anything on his own that is the norm for way of self entitlement.

  • @rmstudio newbie like your works.

  • hope he soaked those stands in fresh water over night and then lubricated them. If not those will be a pile of crumbs in a month. Surprised her let those power cords lay in the water. Very very very dangerous. The amps that could arc out of that are seriously deadly.

  • @rmstudio the price of those stands are nothing compared to the money he gets for his work ! let em turn to crumbs haha !

  • @spimages LMAOF spoken like a true glossy eyed newbie to the game... Let me take total shot in the dark your all of 22 years age at the very most... New to photography less than 3 years and read every photo blog to actually working in the field.. LoL.

  • @rmstudio haha ! very close !! i'm infact 42 and and have been working as a professional photographer for the last 19 years,i have over 40k's worth of equipment including a hasselblad H4D, i suggest you stop wasting time telling everyone they no nothing and spend more time priming your 10$ kettle ! prick

  • Alien bees?

  • @capitaoinfinito As if that has anything to do with the creation of this image or the results... That is such the typical newbie question.

  • @rmstudio Wow, you take yourself very seriously... Let see some of your studio work?

  • wow he is a great strobist photographer...

  • Very thank you for sharing!

  • get the camera off that tripod!

  • Art of Photography Podcast Music.. Stop using Soundtrack Pro and be more original...

  • Joel is there a a webpage where you dicuss your setup/equipment aperature etc to get this shot. It is amazing and came out great!

  • song?

  • All that sunlight - I know let's use multiple flash units and make it looked REALLY clichéd!!!!

  • i like the music whats this song

  • PORN MUSIC

  • Bomberbinz is right, that "Shutter speed will only go so far with controlling the ambient light," which is an excellent reason for having 600-1000-2000ws+ of electronic flash, several batteries or a generator/inverter, especially if you're using multiple Chimera's and (ROSCO) gels. Graduated ND's will help, too, but those may be more appropriate for film or video. See "War Horse" for some remarkable fill and great skies.

  • What wireless trigger are you using!

  • What camera/lens did you use to film the video with? I love the quality.

  • You may have possibly confused the issue. The image would be overexposed if the picture was metered for the talent. jewrabs is correct in the fact that due the sun and clear sky etc the brightness difference between the light coming from the sun and what is on the subject are very high. Meter for the overall scene and the talent would be very dark. Shutter speed will only go so far with controlling the ambient light. Remember most DSLRs ony got to 250th second for flash sync on studio stobs.

  • jewrabs - without the flash, the shot would be overexposed; that is, the lighting, which is essentially fill, knocks down the ambient light (daylight) which provides a DARKER background for the talent (model) illuminated by the electronic flash. Actually, the shutter speed controls the background light. The Rule: Shoot in backlight or weak sidelight, fill the shadow side of the talent and control the background with shutter speed.

    Christopher Springmann

  • Ahhh, I see, thank you sir. Learn something new everyday.

  • From what I see, without the flashes the shot would be extremely underexposed, and since there is a deep DOF, he's shooting at a tiny Aperture to get max clarity and DOF. Are my assumptions true??

  • Joel were you useing some of the sun that was boucing off the water as a source too?

  • can you show how you edited the pics and wat sofware did you use?

  • @khashy87 most probably photoshop...

  • @khashy87 Almost everything is achieved from the lights i think he just adjusted a little the light in camera raw or lightroom.

  • @khashy87 It's all lighting. When you use strobe techniques like this, this is what these shots look like straight out of camera.

  • what is those lighting kits called? your creative is amazing :)

  • You are amazing at using lights! Question: are you using ND filters to darken the ambient light, allowing your Alienbees to overpower and work its magic?

  • Joel, you are the trick-of-light man. The images are surreal.

  • Do you shoot in full manual or TTL mode?

  • You really went all out! I wonder what was your power source.

  • What is the unit that supplies the power? thanks

  • Digital rev music win

  • Hi Joel,

Can you give us some details about the gear you use for this shot (flashes, boxes, pods...).

  • @KorxKlesk

  • I think the squat down pose are so EPIC!

  • Awsome!! Great Job! btw does anyone knows the title of the music?.. Thanks

  • @kievbasaca the music is the free music in Mac computers in garageband is just a loop

  • Hi Joel. Would the same setup with your 5 Canon speed lights work for this as well?

  • whats lens did you use?

  • the cables are in the water!!! carrefull dude!

  • Music's fine, by golly! people bitch about everything!

  • good videos and shots, but man.. this music is terrible and completely detracts.

  • the water is so still. amazing.

  • They say there are many GOOD photographers but a GREAT photographer is one who's work you can recognise by his "style"... like Ansel Adams. Well Joel has style as sure as I have two ears!!

    Well done that man!!!!

  • @simonsgl yeah the heavy lighting style is in with a lot of clients. Or whatever you want to call it. Really I think it looks dull because it's emulated by so many photographers who haven't quite developed their own "look" Not that I have a developed eye either, but I recognize a fad when I see one.

  • @JoJoetheMonkey well, you've sure given me inspiration to go out with my lighting kit and experiment! Thanks Joel. ;-)

  • It's so amazing that you can get lighting like this at such a remote location - most people would head into studio and green screen it - you're a master!

  • what was iso ? 100 and the f/ ? apenture ?

  • that was really great.. can you give us some of the technical numbers!! like what was the heads power !?, Aperture, and shutter speed.. etc. !? thanks

  • fantastic location.

  • the stillness of the water, the location is just amazing! will have to see if there is anywhere like that in scotland…. hahahaha no chance
