@cxpm777 Check: Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson -> they are from detroit, and IMO Atkins is godfather of techno (alias: Model 500 - No UFOs). This is first wave, next wave is Jeff Mills, Mike Banks and Robert Hood.
@RazorBMWPL Dude don't forget Carl Craig, Terrence Parker, Octave One and MK (OK he bacame a yonker but his heart was Detroit - check his early stuff like The Rains on KMS...
Besides Kraftwerk, Cybotron also cited YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra) as an equally important influence. This is especially apparent in "Techno City", which has a name resembling YMO's "Technopolis" (1979), beats resembling YMO's "Rydeen" (1979), and both beats and synths resembling Susan's "My Love" (1981) produced by YMO members Yukihiro Takahashi and Harry Hosono.
"Everyone I took there, it changed their lives.. it inspired everybody I know"

It had a MAJOR influence... listen to this track.. is this what you really think when you hear the word "techno" ? I don't.. you don't hear the house influence yet.. without house.. Detroit techno would just be electro..
don't pay attention to journalism for music history..
@djugel When did he say that? I doubt he did. To say techno originated entirely from house shows quite an ignorance about the influences the likes of Kraftwerk and Parliament had on early Detroit techno. I don't claim to know lots about techno but I do know the early sounds of Detroit techno and Chicago house were produced practically in parallel with each other as opposed to one influencing the other.
one of my favorite tracks. techno = complex beats. many variations of complex beats that are a hybrid of electro beats and house beats. that's why the genre is called techno (complex beats)
This sound was headed in the rite direction..What happened??Us electro guys are just carry the torch 2 the next generation of electro botz...We are the future...
wow i am very impressed, this music of past is very much back in fashion, the dark sound, electro dark with industrial undertone is excellent, love it very much, remixed or re-released hit all over again, well done
This was included on the U.K. label Streetsounds' Electro 4 album. Morgan Khan was the man behind Streetsounds ... their hip hop and soul compilations were essential listening in the 1980s. Intelligent, varied and expertly mixed selections of tracks that otherwise would only have been available as import 12" singles. Ah, those heady days of visiting Groove Records in Soho, and listening to Mike Allen's Capital Radio rap show!
I love this song I grew up Listen to Cybotron I love this track but I have to agree with haikousei about some things a friend and I do techno/electronic music alot of people Europe love this music we promote are music alot in Europe Egyptian Lover, Juan Atkins and others tour in overseas to promote its a damn shame. Another thing we got to remember where House and Techno came from the group Kraftwerk lets not race be an Issue PERIOD
hearing this as an 11 year old in the UK when it came out this was like hearing music from another planet. It was only years later I found out who made it, where he was from etc. Timeless.
I wish Juan Atkins would just remake this with modern production techniques. Better kicks/bass. Everything else is basically just as good if not better than anything in techno today.
to me this reminds me of the good old days in America when old hip hop and the original techno were once united and influenced each other. But now the new music that has appropriated the names "hip hop" and "techno" are separated and have nothing to do which each other.
Well Haikousei you have to keep in mind, in Detroit the only difference between the guys in hiphop and techno really was money. Your techno producers were generally lower-mid and middle class, whereas your hiphop was basically gutter. But I agree, this is back when anyone and everyone listened to both.
what actually happened was that the word "techno" was hijacked by lame people who never had any connection or respect for Detroit at all. Call them exploiters or whatever, but they are the ones that created the crap techno ever since the early 90s that took over the name "techno." but the original stuff is still done in detroit's underground. but unless you go to detroit you will never hear about it since it is safe from commercialization as long as it stays underground. ironic isnt it.
The real irony is I never heard of Detroit Techno until I left America and met all these British people who adored and worshipped Detroit like it was the promised land. I have been converted.
why do americans ignore all their excellent underground talents??? then those ignored people must go to another country to become famous and earn money. america has much musical treasure, but americans ignore it. thats why detroit and chicago djs had to go overseas for recognition and earn real money? btw the originators of house and techno were minorities. so maybe race is issue?
I grew up in the innercities of California. Lived in some very rough and violent places. I knew about early hip hop, when it was still directly influenced by Kraftwerk and other electro acts. However, in my neighborhoods, techno and house quickly became associated with gay subculture which was demonized at the time. If I had listened to techno in my old neighborhood, my "friends" would have definitely felt uncomfortable and maybe even intimidated me. People I met in Europe seemed more sane.
Well, not to get "Europe vs. US"ish, but Europeans in general have always seemed more open minded homosexuality - even though it was still on the list of psychotic diseases in eg. Denmark until the 1980s
Now, I'm only 17 y.o., but the way I see it, house and techno very much did start out as music for the minorities; black ang gay people - which today would be viewed upon as a symbol of liberation of prejudice. To this day, I think the early house and techno scenes set a great exmpl reg. prjdce
same here sig. I played Rammstein at work when were closing once and somebody brought that up. I called the person stupid for thinking German = Nazi and added that I merely speak some German and find metal and that language to be a good combo.
@cdaniels2006 ahahaha seeing at how they flipped out over one guy getting shot recently I don't think they could handle much here besides the electronic music festival. otherwise they'd shit themselves and declare it was the apocalypse.
I once made a point of taking a German exchange student through the ghetto in Detroit to show her America isn't nice at all for the people you don't hear about. She said it was like pictures of Berlin in 1945.
@NorthernAggressor When I first moved to the UK, I thought it was Candy Land. I was walking around like I was bullet proof in some of the worst neighborhoods the UK had to offer. Then, one day, I realised that while people don't have guns -- they do have axes. I'd rather be shot dead than axed!
@cdaniels2006 So true! All the Detroit, Chicago and NY guys were just schmoes back home but they would come to the UK and Germany and be treated like rock stars and earn thousands for DJing!
...and some dumb fucks think Moby invented dance music...
