  • Except the problem is Japanese dramas suck so bad. They are so bad that Japanese people watch Korean dramas.

  • In high school I had 2 good teachers, tomoko & rin.

I if you want to learn Japanese my advice is

1.You can't learn Japanese from just anime.

2 if you can practice with a Japanese person,by normal person I don't mean morning musume or yakuza. that won't work.

My final advice if you cannot get a teacher or go to Japan, watch drama. My favorite drama is Great teacher onizuka,Odoro Daisousasen & Hanayori dango .The Important thing is pronunciation if you don't have that down you can't speak Japanese

  • @anime8explode

This a rough translation of what he said.

I already messed up your advice in my experience with the two first you mentioned. But the last one is still okayドラマを見ます。

  • XD morning musume

  • What does yoroshiku mean?

  • @nekochibi135 "Yoroshiku" is short for "yoroshiku onegaishimasu". It doesn't have a direct translation into English out of context, but I would assume he said it at the end of the video. In this case it means something like "hope to see you soon".

It's generally just a term to express your desire for someone's cooperation or preferential treatment, but can also be used in a "nice to meet you" situation. The best way to understand it is to come here and see it used.

  • haha, I have that hat!

  • .. it's japanese

  • Actually, no. Diction and pronunciation, and the words are totally different. You might be referring to the writing system, Kanji, since its origins are in Chinese writing. :)

  • No, my dear, you are the one who is mistaken. I speak Japanese and a little Mandarin myself, and I can tell you that it's very different.

  • absolutely right.

pronunciation and intonation are most important

    koichiben is almost perfect

    for example

    "su~shi~" is bad

    "sushi" is good

    anyway take it easy

  • this video does seem kind of redundant, then again it was worth watching it just to hear you say I'm so gonna start using that now (not to any of my japanese friends obviously, that'd be dumb.

I can't believe you lived in Jp for only an year?!

  • 1:14 EPIC!

  • I remember watching this originally and having trouble understanding it.

  • Who is that incarnation of female cuteness? ;-)

But seriously, why are TV Dramas better for learning Japanese than Anime? After all, "GTO" and "Hana yori Dango" were Manga AND Anime in the first place.

  • that's erin from koichi's tofugu blog. and i agree, she is really cute! ^^

  • I may be wrong but from my personal experience and learning I find the dramas better because a lot of my friends watch only anime and when they speak Japanese they try and sound like the animes they watch and sound too cutesy and its hard to understand what they are saying, whereas in the dramas they speak like normal people speak on an everyday basis(most of the time anyways). Personally I'd rather not sound like a cartoon character when I speak, I don't do cute well:P

  • True. But it depends on the Anime they're watching. There are very "dorama-like" Anime out there, although I do admit that they're kinda rare lately.

  • haha

so japanese isn't your first language?

  • I love your videos but why did you make one that gives advice on Japanese learning, when you are speaking Japanese, lol!

  • moshimoshi umeboshi. haven't heard that before but i'm gonna use it all the time now.

You speake nice Japanese:)

  • On the thumbnail to this video you look like you suck someone's dick. :)

  • LOL PANDA

  • I dun mind the otaku acting+ bad complexion face, but pleaaasse stop with the irritating slang. Spreakkk Properry!!

  • PANDA!

  • Just wondering.. Why are you giving ways of learning Japanese IN Japanese? Shouldn't this vid be in English so that native English speakers can find ways of learning Japanese? ... baka

  • Hmm- watching some anime can be helpful, I think, as long as you don't get the idea that it's actually ok to go around talking like that. I do agree with you about the dramas though- I can't say I think that even the best of them are great television, but they're good practice. I've been doing a bit of fansubbing of dramas lately. One thing I would suggest is taking the plunge and watching some Raws before you feel you're ready to.

  • Beyond that, you'll need some books. You should at least have the textbooks from a series used in University programs. I used Nakama to start, but there are other series- Genki is often recommended. Beyond that you'll need dictionaries and usage references. The basic and intermediate dictionaries of Japanese grammar are a good start here- they can be had for about $100.00 for both volumes on ebay.

  • Go through the programmed books as quickly as you can- don't memorize much. Aim at reading through 2 years of an intensive Uni program in a few months. At the same time watch 2-4 hours a day of Japanese television. Get some parallel text books and start learning to read. After a year you will at least be able to get the gist of almost anything you watch, without subtitles. That's only a beginning of course, but it's a better one than most Uni students get in that time.

  • thanks for the info ^^

  • HE SAID DATTEBAYO!

  • You're funny. And I like your hat.

I enjoy watching because you speak slow and I can understand almost everything :)

  • wow that was some morning musume impression... lol nice gokusen reference!

  • You know Koichiben, I really enjoyed your video, while I understood it, I think majority of your fans do not which is exactly who you were trying to give advice to. Is it possible you made the "Learn Japanese from anime in only 5 minutes a day!! 1337!" video for that reason?

  • that would be why, though, I don't think the english one covers everything - more videos soonish, though.

i meant to spend this summer as an exchange student, but...umm...yeah, long story....now i'm in the process of looking for colleges on the east coast that have good japanese programs, and offer some sort of exchange program....

  • i spent second half of junior year and first half of senior year, and got back in time to graduate and go off to college. Good luck on finding a college!

  • haha. Gokusen. Only drama I've seen. What I basically think you said was the different ways people speak in anime and dramas compared to standard spoken japanese. That's a topic in Gokusen too, haha. Yakuza ways of talking, just like Yankumi. Haha. Fight-o oh. Faito-oh.

  • Which Japanese area did you stay in?
