Look at some real photos I made of the dutch reconstructed 17th century East Indiaman Batavia under sail near Sydney in 2000. See my bataviaphotos web site , it shows a similar ship in real action. ... Great animation anyway .. congratulations ! Cheers: Jaap Roskam - Australia
Your courses should be sheeted onto the ship and not into the ocean, hehe. It looks like there are invisible yards under the water.
those guys are severely down by the head.. either the masts are to be carried away at any moment or their masters/bosuns need need to rethink their stowing. :P
I'm sorry I have not replied to your comment earlier , I have been out of the country on a yacht delivery and I only got back last night. In all my years at sea I have never seen this . But I do think there is some confusion here with what is known as relative wind .
The music in both of our demos was created in SoundTrack (FCS 2) by one of our animators. All the music that you will hear in the film itself though, is going to be completely original, composed specifically for Broadside.
This is very interesting , but you have made a elementary mistake . Flags on sailing ships fly aft not forward. See any film of one and you will see this.
Actually, the speed of 17th century ships was very much determined by the wind, and when that is the case, the ship's flags will often be pointed in the same direction as the sails. For reference, you can look at 17th century paintings of ships at sea, or watch clips from "Master and Commander" and "Pirates of the Caribbean."
@youdoc Elementary syllogism: "In what direction the wind must go in relation to a sail ship in order to enable the ship to move?" To forwards, at any degree between 0º and 180º. "Thus, all the sails would've got to fly at some point forwards to make the ship sail, what will make any thing hanging on to her fly also at some point forwards." Logic?
Physics says if the wind is blowing one way hard enough, the flag also point that way.
although with the size of that sale and the distance to the flag, I think the flag wouldn't be catching that much wind. The sail would be blocking a large portion of it and causing the flag to be more turbulent.
@welshpete12 So much for Hollywood, to have the flags fly towards the aft you'd need a headwind, useless for getting anywhere in a sailing ship. Flags fly whichever way wind pushes them, 17th century sailing ships were not immune to physics.

Yep its a "Pinnace" ship the Dutch made bigger versions later of the Pinnace, the normal size version was made by the French i think but i am not sure.
Just remenber if it wasn't for the bad weather the spanish armada would destroy the english in sea battle. Spanish lost large amount of ships due to stormy sea.
Those are damn nice 3D models! Hats off to you!

really really good ship model, and the rendering is also very well!
they just seem to have either a very, very heavy figurehead or a tough hand brake action...

this is an incredible animation. I was wondering if you used any live motion picture to integrate into this video?

Hi! I'm afraid in your (otherwise brilliant) animation the Ships dipping far too deep into the water with the bow.

Not when the ship is sinking from the front.

LOL .. Then I'd stop sailing and start repairs ^^

This is an awsome bit of video.
It's one thing to see pictures and schematics in books but quite a wonderful new animal to see these great ships in this fly by depiction.
Thank you so much for posting this!!

I found out that its not French its made in England and Netherlands but the Dutch build it first so i think its a Dutch design.

I like 0:44 view in the video of the ship looking towards to the back of the ship towards the ship's gally.

good showreel,
just one important thing.
the boat is sailing with the wind in the back, but the flags are totally opposite against the wind. it looks a little weird.
for the rest, good job!
rikkantio 3 years ago
ehm the wind in the back means also that the flags are blown forward
