  • way ahead of his time 80's were the best for music!!!

  • awesome synth, that's all I can say

  • Brilliant!!!

  • nice song, such gay looking lads.

  • Comment removed

  • one of the best vocals from phil, i think

  • Love the Human League, was lucky enough to meet them a few years ago, can't remember the exact year, but i think I was about 10 at the time, my mum predictably embarrassed herself in front of Phil, i think the conversation went something like "when I was 17 I wanted to marry you" to which Phil replied "yeah, bet you don't now though!" I'm now 19 and STILL LOVE THE HUMAN LEAGUE!!!

  • all the human leagues songs are sublime not one bad song ever love em all and hes looking good for 55

  • That was BLUE.

  • such an awesome song!

  • Amazing song from an amazing album. Dare was full of ace, brilliant tracks. Surely one of the greatest albums of all time.

  • @kkapalk1 Molly Meldrum rated the album very highly, insisting it would be a classic. It was. Poor Molly ill in a coma at present.

  • I saw them the other night in Vancouver and, what a relief! Not only were they really good and sounding great, but not once did they flash a damn illuminati hand signal! Cheers to that!

  • What a great job in keyboards by Ian Burden as well as the genius and charm of Philip Oakey...

  • @TrejosEd i grew up with the human league,, was great then ,, will always bring bk greatr memories : )

  • great lol

  • DARE...30 years old on 30/10/2011....still a CLASSIC album....pass it on ....

  • Goddamnit Oakley what's wrong with you? Why you gotta wear makeup and crazy hairstyles all the time? But most importantly... how can you do all that and sing like a fuckin pro at the same time? Long live the 80's and The Human League!

  • @FMPNatal

If you're gonna criticize the great man at least try to get his name right.

  • He might have been a screaming mincing gay boy but Phil has the BEST voice for this type of work. A freaking genius.

  • @zapkvr

Hahaha!! Phill's not gay! He actually was dating Joanne Catherall at the time of this vid.

  • @chezzeeX How very dare you?! MarC Almond is not gay and is in actual fact something of a depressive.

  • @MisAnnThorpe If I dressed like that I'd be depressed too:)

  • Am i right in thinking that the annoyingly catchy little riff in the chorus is actually one of those really crappy little Casio keyboards that also doubled as a calculator?!

  • This single had a lovely b side song too.

  • Hee Hee, Oakey almost misses his cue at 1:33!

  • It was all about posing back then. Make up and looking good for the camera.Oh and pretending to be popstars,us girlies.

  • Great track!

    Gay hair!!!

  • ....but if you can stand "their" test you know your know your "worst" better than their "best"..........

  • its a great album...its stood the test of time..you may not like their style..but their legends of pop/rock and dare takes its rightful place in the best albums of all time..i love it

  • ELVI$

  • weened on elder sister music - excellent taste

  • "Dare" by the Human League is one of my top 10 favorite albums.

I understand that this group had some influence on Rush's 1982

    album "Signals".

  • haha-hairstyles :D

  • It nearly makes me cry when i here this song :D Awesome band :) x

  • top band will never fade, top music

  • iconic 80s group! STill fresh today when they played at Manchester Pride two years ago there were people who werent even born when they were in charts dancing along!

  • flick that wedge we all did lol

  • i fucking hate clips with fucking intrio !!!!

  • What's with the intro to the vid??? Silly and cool :0)

  • What a tune, brings back so many memories lol

  • Not a big fan of Phil's hair during this era BUT he's super hot so he pulled it off lol. I love how expressive he is with his eyes in this vid, very sexy!

  • Comment removed

  • @dirtysouthlepluv BY THE WAY i like 1:52 - 2:07 the most. Philip is hot don't diss him, listen to their other songs, this one is corny and I guess Philip for the first time doesn't look as great :'( oh well i still 100% adore the band!!!

  • @dirtysouthlepluv in the space of the 'dare' photosesssions, phil's hair changed from the lobsided full-on freakshow style to part wedgehead to french crop wedge, to groovefringe, to slickback city comb, close-crop and (almost) suedehead. the album and the fashion imagery was way ahead of its time, and still looks cool today. the green/silver eyeshadow combo - with heavy black eyeliner - is pure max factor. the ivory skin tone is clinique number one - very expensive in england in the 80s.

  • top ten album of all time,,still

  • 0:37. Gay Hair!

    Great song!!!

  • Wow that is epic fail of a haircut.

  • great song. the swaying still annoying though.

  • aaaaahhh, that synth sound...feckin ace!!!

  • In the beggining the lead singer looked like marilyn manson..lol

  • @ear2oear actually the other way round

  • @ear2oear actually the other way round.

  • the sound of an era. bring back the league!

  • what the hell is that clarinet song in the beginning, i know ive heard it before someplace! driving me mad!

  • @hotrodZack1948 It's the theme song for The Little Rascals

  • @hotrodZack1948

    Clarinet?

    Where?

    It`s a synth!

  • I want that hairstyle, but whenewer I do a haircut I look like Sai Baba XD

  • Great song,

  • My mum swears to God that Phil Oakey copied this hairstyle of her when he met her in a club in the late 70s. I don't know why she even admits to having it herself never mind inspiring it, I think it's horrendous!

That aside, what an amazing song

    Love the Human League :-)

  • @thespinballwhizzer Yeah it could do with a hair straightener I think. I have a similar hairstyle lol. The roundness chunky aspect of it is a bit gross for me.

  • @thespinballwhizzer

It`s more likely that he got the idea from Veronica Lake.

  • lovin the hair!

  • cool weird video i don't know why i like it either hm

  • As good as Susan (pushing 50!) looks now, if I had to choose it would still be Joanne. She is über-MILF. 'Course, twos up would be quite acceptable too. That is all.

  • On the tails of the success of this record Phil Oakey was able to afford the other half of that haircut.

  • @HughieDixon I love that response... classic! He had to get the other side of his head "sorted" keep it up! oh by the way, Joanne, are you free to join me in bed for a bit of.... hee! god, Joanne and Susan in this are just: :))))) well keep it that way. love u guys xxx

  • anyone who lived when this great music was on the RADIO .i sure did . this is 10/10, 1981 ,to the haters, open your ears.

  • @mackinl not only did i live i was 16 when this was out and i live 5 mile from Sheffield so i was one of the freak show lol and yes i did the make up and the fashion and loved every minute good times

  • @billyfury4eva up the owls!! WTID!! :)

  • omg his hair !

  • I think it's the soaring synths that do it for me, chord changes mid verse, i think it's amazin!!!

  • I think it's the soaring synths that do it for me, chord changes mid verse, i think it's amazin!!!

  • The Human League were big underground before they made it big Top40.

    They were not fakers.

DARE is one of the greatest albums of all time.

Tunes you can humm to with simple grooves.

An absolute masterpiece of its time.

1000 years from now people will still listen to this album.

  • @ggbggbggb Agree! Have the Album and think it's better than Shit nowadays!

  • @ggbggbggb Totally agree with you!! Dare is my record of all time!!!

  • @ggbggbggb Just have a little think about the ridiculousness of your comment. Yeah it's great pop music but the likelihood of people still listening to "Dare in" 1000 years time is negligible. There are very few, if any Beatles songs that people will still listen to in 100 years time from now, never mind 1000! Maybe "Yesterday" and just maybe "Eleanor Rigby and "A day in the life" but I wouldn't bet on it.

  • heh heh his hair X )

  • 1:09 pure-epic!

  • one of the best hair styles in the world!

  • classic!!

  • brilliant album had many a good time listening to this

  • ki bixona!!!!

  • Another 49 people with no sense of romance or expression.

  • 80's chicks were so hot, seriously

  • Thanks for putting this on here, takes me back to the year b4 I left school !

  • saw a few comments here about phil's sexuality ,well incase you did'nt know he was shagging both the girls in the band ,now thats the way to be a front man of a band .

  • Oakey almost misses his que at 1.29 !

  • This sounds like Abba, too. That's not a bad thing. "Dance While The Music Still Goes On," specifically. And then "Fernando," with those flutes.

  • @brightbite Oh Dear, you have no idea! Abba and the League are apples and oranges!

  • @espinaca79 Oh Dear, you have obviously not listened to the songs I mentioned. Go listen to those songs and you will hear the influence. I'm not saying they are exactly alike. I'm saying I hear an influence.

  • @espinaca79 Sorry mate but he/she's right and you're wrong! Melodically this could quite easily be an Abba song. It really shouldn't take a great deal of imagination to imagine it thus.

  • @brightbite At the time, as a short-lived marketing tactic, The Human League were labeling their singles "Red" or "Blue" to help buyers differentiate between the band's musical styles. "Open Your Heart" was the first to be designated "Blue". When they were asked why, Susanne Sulley explained that "Red is for posers, for Spandy (Spandau Ballet) types." Oakey added: "Blue is for ABBA fans."

  • 49 assholes have closed hearts.

  • absolutely love this song. Pure, simple, and uplifting. Oakey's voice is so strong & distinctive. Listening to this is like a breath of fresh air, compared with modern over-produced, hissy, auto-tuned, computer-altered crap that is churned out by the bucket-load these days.

  • They end concealing and tried revealing. The Human League new song is called Night People. From their upcoming album Credo.

  • No Future Without Tears.

  • awesome song with fantastic lyrics.

nothing comes close in this age of over marketed music.

"....but if you can stand the test, you know your worst is better than their best..."

  • is that a boy or a girl?

  • Wow! This was one of my favorite tracks from this album.... Held very special meaning at the time but had forgotten about it until now. Thanks for posting! :)

  • Do I hear a Taraus Bass Petal being used in this song!!

  • this was during their beginings. Pretty old song. Its got kind of a jungle Disney feel to it. :)

  • Yum, woman-like men!!

  • Gross, woman-like men!!

  • I love these low-budget, but endearing, old music videos.

  • THE TASTE OF MAMMA, THANKS

  • the keyboard solo looks like it takes some SERIOUS talent

  • Phil Oakey is a freakin genius.

  • Not liking the one-sided locks...but still love this group

  • I'm sorry Oakey's haircut was NEVER EVER cool. Don't get me worng, you have got to admire the sheer fucking fearlessless to try and start a fashion which was never gonna catch on, but he only ever looked silly, bless his cotton socks.

A truly great pop record though. x

  • @tallysblood mate the wedge was very 80 s in fact it was in everybody had this cut phil just went one step further and we all wanted to look like him ....yes ?

  • I wonder how many kids came to this video looking for the crush 40 song and then bashed this for--

    *looks at Treeny4's comment*

Oh. Looks like they already did. ~_~

  • Adored the sheer optimism of British new romantics coming out at such a hugely bleak and depressing time. Joyous!

  • @tommym1966

So right - there wasn't much to shout about in 81/82, riots, recession and redundancy, music was great though....

  • 80s at its best, excellent

  • i think they meant "gay" as in stupid; not gay as in homosexual......like "OMG! You cant go to the prom?! Thats SOOOew gay!"

  • @FreakMagnet rofl nobody called anything "gay" in the 80's like that unless their were referring to their homosexual friend.

people had more class then than they do now.

  • Early 80's. Never thought gay. Bought the cassette and loved it.

  • Great fuckin Music. They don't make Electronic like this anymore. And, his haircut is gay by our modern standards, but back then it was cool.

  • wow...i feel gay just hearing and watching..

  • Sounds like My Foolish Pride by the Charlatans. What's that?, Phil Oakey wrote this 25 years before ...?

  • got my tickets for sheffield city hall on 1st december.....

  • Who cares if he IS gay? He can do whatever he wants and he does. That's a person who isn't worried about frivolousness.

  • I was part of this, I'm an 80's child...

Love to all you TRUE believers..

Class, class and class!! ... Gawd, I feel so _____ old ... :/

    Thanks for sharing!!

You other 'idiots' commenting about Phil, He was and will always be 'Class' something that's lacking from music for ... about 15 years now (at least!).

Life kicks you in the nuts and rips your dreams apart, one thing remains.. the music and the emotions of the Eighties ..

  • @Innersymbiance excellent comments i echo them...

  • OMG! I thought this was a figment of my 80's videos dreams, but no, this is the video from which I remember Phil Oakey having that one-sided long haircut. I haven't seen this for like 26 years. BRAW (as we say in Scotland). WHOOP

  • im actully sooooo, in love with the human league :O:D:D:D

  • Their song Heart Like a Wheel is awesome.

  • At least they had style now, much better than the rap inspired baggy crap pants, baseball cap and oversised football jerseys!! Yuck! Long live 1981

  • I'd forgotten how good this track was....thank you for posting

  • kind of a cheesy song.

  • The Human League rulez!

  • Love and dancing, get it and listen to it, one of the best 80's albumns ever.

  • what a good track ...totally timeless..heart touching...

as for boring the wonder woofter making comments about phils hair = sexuality...please go back to your hompohobic world and wake up just cos he may look half women and half man doesnt mean he is one...I look like a bird but Im sorry but no one like fit sexy curvy birds more than me..trust me

  • @numberwang2020 timeless is a bit strong, i think it sounds of its time and i like it :)

  • AWESOME VIDEO!!! CLASSIC 80'S~

  • Why come on youtube, seek out The Human League and then bash them as if you have no idea who they were and what they were about...FAIL!!!

  • Great intro to this tune

  • With such background singers, I would turn hetero

  • @okkith64 it was called a peek aboo hair cut theright side of his face was covered , but not in the video ..

  • ROFL! wtf is up with his hair??

  • @YESHUAISMERCIFUL it was called a peek aboo hair cut the right side of his face was covered , but not in the video ..

  • wait, i didn't even know there was any question about his sexuality lol.

He just radiates sex lol i bet his neighbors got pregnant just by looking at him!

  • this is awesome

  • I tried bot the song is not very good, SORRY:)

  • @ warminator Phils actually married to joanne catherill the dark haired one! HTH

  • Not a bad song !!! human leauge one of the best 80's bands !!!!!love the drums and effects.

  • awesome

  • stupid retards, the hair was only a gimmic to get more media attention,

and i guess it still works after all there years..

i'dd would have imagined people being smart enough to figure it out..

instead they act like homophobe idiots.. it realy says something about their intelligence..i'm even thinking their repressed gay's themselfs.

  • I love this song but two girls can't sing, can't dance, can't lipsynch. I wish the original lineup had stayed together.

  • @celtkilt This line up? Or the original original line up? I grew up with this but enjoy the earlier stuff too...

  • I didn't like this song when it came out while I was still at school, but grew to love it in the mid 80s. Keyboard miming totally wrong at 1:15 - Always made me laugh, and I love how the bass drops at 3:23. Great song.

  • @BlackmoonUK - and the Golden Anorak award goes to...

  • @prescient8 - Hehe, Proud to wear it. Seriously though, to anybody who plays keyboards, it feels uncomfortable to watch, it's weird.

  • @BlackmoonUK - I agree with you. Why not get play the right keys on the keyboard in front of the camera--even if it was someone else's hand being shot. Very odd. That aside, interesting video to watch. Btw, I'd like to know if anyone knows who directed this video because some of the shots look very very similar to some shots in Duran Duran's "Planet Earth" video. Watch both, if you'd like, and you'll see what I mean.

  • @7tigerland - If my memory is correct, It was the same person that directed Kim Wilde's View From A Bridge. Though I can't tell you his/her name. You could be right with the Planet Earth thing too.

  • One of the most beautiful tunes of ALL TIMES.

    Common, Open your heart

  • @moretinga OK AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • AMAZING song !!!! Listen up folks!! Compare this fantastic music to the manufactured rubbish we are fed now. No comparison. Phil Oakey has an amazing voice. And don't even bring sexuality into it. The world is free of that kind of shit now. You can be gay, straight, bi, it doesn't matter. Just be yourself. So sad that kids are now the ones who seem to want to imprison each other with hate, after the adults have spent generations freeing ourselves from all the crap about stereotypes!

  • dont call him a emo or he will come around to your house and rape you cat and rip your head off and skull fuck you.

  • Ha ha ha Oakey gay because of his look????? ask your dad who was his style icon back in the day ;0)

  • Great band, great sound, great fashion.

  • buenaa moña el mejor sonido de los 80

  • Top song. I wanna go back to being 10 years old-so easy back then with a great soundtrack. By the way I thought Phil had the coolest look and I was madly in love with both the girls.

  • doesnt he look like cathryn zeta jones after she got beat up and robbed

  • this still fresh now as then ye 80's.

    sorry emo slip.

  • bedroom as a teenager the most listened to maybe....the album and signing off ub40

  • bedroom as a teenager the most listened to maybe....the album and signing off ub40

  • classic. their music hasnt dated. brilliant!

  • @dee267 Neither has their song releases lol

  • Amazing and EPIC. This music never gets old.

  • If you squint a little, he looks like Natalie Merchant .

  • I just mentally collapsed...THE MEMORIES!!! Was 15 again...feeling to kool for school.Phil was my hero. Time machine anyone?

  • Another beautiful song with impact in the eighties. I remember me the maxi-single with a great beat on it....MORE fantastic '80`s music on my channel!!!
