Too many people do not respect Karpov. I am a Kasparov fan myself. But I saw Karpov give him a run for his money back in the '80's and 90's. It wasn't flashy chess in the style of Tal and that is why I think people don't have the interest. There can only be one world champ and the man he had to beat at that time WAS Karpov.
@lutist I had the same chess set as what you see. I bought it from a UK company but i have forgotten the name of the shop. But you can also order from chessusa . com Make sure you delete the spaces.
These are called Staunton Chess sets. They are the standardized ones used in tournaments.
I don't understand why people think just because you're not your best anymore you should go away. He's not a boxer, he isn't incurring and damage. it's just a GAME. He likes to play the game. so what he's not number 1 anymore, wtf. He likes it so he plays it. damn. He's still a grand master that can woop up on ANYBODY on youtube.
@VikingII Yeah seriously. By that logic that other people use, while the hell do old rich folks spend all their time golfing? You're not gonna be a Tiger Woods. Just because you're not "competitive" per say doesn't mean you should quit. As long as you enjoy doing what you do, continue.
@jingeshan24 I guess that by chess player you understand passive?
Karpov, thoug he isn't as flashy a player as kasparov or topalov, is not at all passive and Van Wely is probably the guy on the planet who plays the riskiest chess, so much so that he probably loses twice as many games as any other player of his class.
He's the kind of guy who attacks from the very opening ! look at his many games against radjabov in the KID if you're not convinced.
@jingeshan24 I do agree about Sutovsky being an agressive player. There's space for many agressive players and many types of agression in the chess world.
You can call V.W. plain stupid or whatever, but I won't get into such a debate, as I feel beating players such as Gashimov (lately) proves his play isn't that stupid. I enjoy his games and that's quite enough for me.
@kubbelisgod well beating someone once is not what i would call an accivement...
i could brag about beating boris gelfand a while ago without mentioning the fact that it was in a simultaneous game...
i do agree that loek is a good player, obviouslly you cant be a grandmaster without being good in this game, and you can even be good without making much of a progress on your side of the board like petrosian or korchnoi, yet i find such players quite boring.
Fischer vs. Karpov was impossible because Fischer's brain was defective. Normal cognitive function was already severely compromised in Fischer by 1972.
Being a world champion requires being able to function normally in society on a day-to-day basis, an ability that Fischer sorely lacked.
Like it or not Karpov is a legend. To see him go down fighting, it yet another lesson that Karpov has taught us all. He is truly a great champion. What a loss for chess that Fischer and Karpov never played! Fischer was a great champion as well.
Fischer was the only World Champion to not play a SINGLE GAME while he was champ. How great is that? He was great as a player BEFORE he became Champ, and by the time of the 1972 match was probably the strongest player ever up to that time... but he was as far from a great champion as anyone can possibly be. ZERO GAMES. Worst sitting Champion in history by default.
Uh, look at his games from 1992. Other than possibly game 1 of that exhibition match with Spassky, Fischer was clearly not world-class any more, and he knew it. The quality of the games was not even near the world's élite of that time, and if Fischer said he was that good while cranking out that (by Super-GM standards) garbage, he was more crazy than I thought.
By his death, he was much, much weaker even than he was in 1992. Age and lack of practice are real and cannot be overcome by anyone.
well obviously Fischer wasn't #1 anymore but i think Spassky was still in the world top 100 in 1992, and he lost the match. it's not fair to say that Fischer played "garbage, by super-GM standards". he played like a 2700.
Yes, it is a Staunton design of course, but why any Grandmaster would agree to play on anything less than a House of Staunton manufactured set is beyond my comprehension.
The best design they ever made was the Collector II in Blood Rosewood at 4.0
The best Blitz sets are the Ebony Professional and the Reykjavic II in Blood Rosewood or Ebony.
@georgegrasser Most strong players don't care much about fancy boards and pieces : strong players actually prefer common boards and pieces as they're used to them after years playing in tournaments.
You can get a tournament chess set for about 50-60€, and seeing an tournament organizer buy house of staunton sets for a blitz tournament would make most GMs laugh
Karpov and Kasparov in their prime were about equal, with Kasparov winning out in the end -- but they were certainly close. On the other hand, Karpov may be better to study, because he relies more on simple ideas, like Capablanca and Fischer, and less on brilliancy, which can't be learned. Both had to be brilliant, but Karpov gives us more non-brilliant ideas to study.
Karpov is a myth! One of the best players ever!

van wely and karpov are both passive players who wait for their appoment to make a mistake....
it is kinda boring to watch their games but i guess van wely was on the offensive side this time

@kubbelisgod if wan wely is offensive in your mind you have never seen emil sutovsky playing.
he's probably the most agressive and inconsistent player the chess world has ever seen.
he won airoplot with a flawless 8\9 performance and a few months later did a 2.5 or a 3 out of 14 at wejk an zee....
his games won numerous chess oscars and awards.
wan wely loses games because of stupid mistakes not because of risky playstyle..
there's risky and there's plain stupid.
