I like John Taylor a LOT but this band succeeded because of good songwriting, great production, and that weird alchemy that eludes all but a band or two per generation. If there were one person to whom credit belongs, though, it's definitely Nick Rhodes. There's an interesting article in Sound on Sound about the sessions for this record. It's interesting to hear what the engineer's take on their actual musical abilities were, especially as regards Le Bon.
